Located in Bowden Rach, a desirable neighborhood near Downtown San Luis Obispo, The Smith residence represents a fusion of styles and a unique program. The clients came with the request for a modestly sized living space and an oversized garage/workshop big enough to house the activities for all of their hobbies. The clients’ pastimes include welding, furniture making, and working on cars and motorcycles. The design solution is a 2600 SF residence and 1200 SF garage. Architecturally, the contemporary saw tooth and butterfly rooflines paired with traditional detailing and materials provided the clients with the unique look they desired. On the exterior, the building is clad in smooth trowel stucco, corrugated metal and slate tile. On the interior, stained concrete floors, exposed structure and custom eucalyptus cabinetry and casework provide for a unique blend of industrial and warm traditional.

The client was referred to us by the builder to build a vacation home where the family mobile home used to be. Together, we visited Key Largo and once there we understood that the most important thing was to incorporate nature and the sea inside the house. A meeting with the architect took place after and we made a few suggestions that it was taking into consideration as to change the fixed balcony doors by accordion doors or better known as NANA Walls, this detail would bring the ocean inside from the very first moment you walk into the house as if you were traveling in a cruise. A client's request from the very first day was to have two televisions in the main room, at first I did hesitate about it but then I understood perfectly the purpose and we were fascinated with the final results, it is really impressive!!! and he does not miss any football games, while their children can choose their favorite programs or games. An easy solution to modern times for families to share various interest and time together. Our purpose from the very first day was to design a more sophisticate style Florida Keys home with a happy vibe for the entire family to enjoy vacationing at a place that had so many good memories for our client and the future generation. The client's programming requests for the Home Outside online design team included a pool and hot tub, outdoor kitchen, pergola, fire pit, and children's play area - a lot of functions for a small space. Setback issues and prevailing winds also presented design considerations. A few trees and shrubs had been recently planted, but the homeowner was open to relocating them.

The effort to create an intimate estate with this Arts and Crafts residence involved extensive interaction with architects, engineers, and clients. Key program elements were strong connections to the house architecture within the landscape, formal entry, pool terracing w/ multiple entertaining spaces, and the creation of strong sightlines from the key house elements. The front drive was carefully routed around existing mature trees that had specific tree preservation methods such as vertical mulching, root injections, and root pruning were undertaken as best management practices. The drive, bluestone chip and seal with a granite curb, brought the architecture into the landscape by playing off colors in the slate roof to further tie everything together. Also flanking the front drive, is a pseudo ha-ha wall that plays homage to its French/English roots. Landscapes overall were kept relatively formal and simple in the front to blend with the architecture and allow the client to make use of annual bedding areas as they found appropriate. In the rear, most elements incorporated simple hedge rows, with accents at the corners. A key sightline from the rear turret across the pool was the main focus and centerline that most elements got their symmetry. With this view, it was deemed important to create a focal at the other end. A rear rose garden flanks either side of the pool house giving a strong focal point across the pool area. The backyard had the space, but the overall topography and programming elements to create the specific outdoor rooms that the client was requesting, took extensive foresight and planning. The client was looking for spaces to relax in all months of the year, this was accomplished by upper patio spaces near the exterior fireplace and dining room for cooler months and an outdoor kitchen area closer to the pool for summer months.

TYPE:FLAT RENOVATION LOCATION: ROME, VIALE PARIOLI PROGRAM: 60 m² DESIGN: 2013 COMPLETED: 2014 This interior design work is located in a building that was once a social housing unit and is now fronting one of the most elegant streets in Rome. The “Ante Operam” situation of the flat was therefore inadeguate to the client’s desires. The main operation was to invert what was living space with the bedroom. During the renovation of the new living room, an old wooden roof was found on the top of the old ceiling: it was restored and painted in white. The lamp is the famous “Arco” by Achille Castiglioni, the applique is the “Tolomeo” by Michele De Lucchi.

My client had an open niche to the left of their main family room fire place. They had a hard time envisioning what would look best in the space since it is a built in product and big decision. Our CAD program really helped my clients picture what the entertainment center would look like with our 3D visual. We selected a color that tied into the stone on their fireplace which really enhanced the final look. It was important to build a piece that looked like it originally came with the home.

While most people in town considered this building a "tear-down", the new homeowners wanted to revive the property with an ambitions renovation and addition project. Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition. In order to achieve these goals, our team studied how farm buildings evolve on a site over time. Additions are usually constructed based on need and function. With this protocol in mind, a grain silo was designed to act as our entry tower and buffer the intersection of the two buildings. The silo acts as our focal point and allowed us to construct very simple buildings to house the balance of the owner’s program. The team paid very close attention to scale, use of materials (many of which were recycled) and developed a vocabulary of modern interior detailing that would complement the original house. Specific program requirements for the project included: large entertainment spaces, gourmet kitchen with adjacent family room, a squash court, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, master suite, and plenty of storage space. In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

We wanted to give our client the feeling of being in a spa. So we chose colors that would reflect that feeling, warm travertine with hint of aqua. We incorporated a towel warmer and a radiant heating system in the floor that is controlled by a wi-fi programmable thermostat.

The comfortable elegance of this French-Country inspired home belies the challenges faced during its conception. The beautiful, wooded site was steeply sloped requiring study of the location, grading, approach, yard and views from and to the rolling Pennsylvania countryside. The client desired an old world look and feel, requiring a sensitive approach to the extensive program. Large, modern spaces could not add bulk to the interior or exterior. Furthermore, it was critical to balance voluminous spaces designed for entertainment with more intimate settings for daily living while maintaining harmonic flow throughout. The result home is wide, approached by a winding drive terminating at a prominent facade embracing the motor court. Stone walls feather grade to the front façade, beginning the masonry theme dressing the structure. A second theme of true Pennsylvania timber-framing is also introduced on the exterior and is subsequently revealed in the formal Great and Dining rooms. Timber-framing adds drama, scales down volume, and adds the warmth of natural hand-wrought materials. The Great Room is literal and figurative center of this master down home, separating casual living areas from the elaborate master suite. The lower level accommodates casual entertaining and an office suite with compelling views. The rear yard, cut from the hillside, is a composition of natural and architectural elements with timber framed porches and terraces accessed from nearly every interior space flowing to a hillside of boulders and waterfalls. The result is a naturally set, livable, truly harmonious, new home radiating old world elegance. This home is powered by a geothermal heating and cooling system and state of the art electronic controls and monitoring systems.
