This spacious, multi-level backyard in San Luis Obispo, CA, once completely underutilized and overtaken by weeds, was converted into the ultimate outdoor entertainment space with a custom pool and spa as the centerpiece. A cabana with a built-in storage bench, outdoor TV and wet bar provide a protected place to chill during hot pool days, and a screened outdoor shower nearby is perfect for rinsing off after a dip. A hammock attached to the master deck and the adjacent pool deck are ideal for relaxing and soaking up some rays. The stone veneer-faced water feature wall acts as a backdrop for the pool area, and transitions into a retaining wall dividing the upper and lower levels. An outdoor sectional surrounds a gas fire bowl to create a cozy spot to entertain in the evenings, with string lights overhead for ambiance. A Belgard paver patio connects the lounge area to the outdoor kitchen with a Bull gas grill and cabinetry, polished concrete counter tops, and a wood bar top with seating. The outdoor kitchen is tucked in next to the main deck, one of the only existing elements that remain from the previous space, which now functions as an outdoor dining area overlooking the entire yard. Finishing touches included low-voltage LED landscape lighting, pea gravel mulch, and lush planting areas and outdoor decor.

This 1826 Beacon Hill single-family townhouse received upgrades that were seamlessly integrated into the reproduction Georgian-period interior. feature ceiling exposing the existing rough-hewn timbers of the floor above, and custom-sawn black walnut flooring. Circulation for the new master suite was created by a rotunda element, incorporating arched openings through curving walls to access the different program areas. The client’s antique Chinese screen panels were incorporated into new custom closet casework doors, and all new partitions and casework were blended expertly into the existing wainscot and moldings.

This property came with a house which proved ill-matched to our clients’ needs but which nestled neatly amid beautiful live oaks. In choosing to commission a new home, they asked that it also tuck under the limbs of the oaks and maintain a subdued presence to the street. Extraordinary efforts such as cantilevered floors and even bridging over critical root zones allow the design to be truly fitted to the site and to co-exist with the trees, the grandest of which is the focal point of the entry courtyard. Of equal importance to the trees and view was to provide, conversely, for walls to display 35 paintings and numerous books. From form to smallest detail, the house is quiet and subtle.

The challenge presented by the existing footprint was to open up the shower as much as possible without making the walkway too cramped. Ceiling-mounted shower doors by Cardinal Glass give the impression of greater space.

While most people in town considered this building a "tear-down", the new homeowners wanted to revive the property with an ambitions renovation and addition project. Two major challenges needed to be overcome on this project: the first was preserving the integrity of the original 200 year old barn; the second was designing a complementary structure that would co-exist on the site without looking like a 21st century addition. In order to achieve these goals, our team studied how farm buildings evolve on a site over time. Additions are usually constructed based on need and function. With this protocol in mind, a grain silo was designed to act as our entry tower and buffer the intersection of the two buildings. The silo acts as our focal point and allowed us to construct very simple buildings to house the balance of the owner’s program. The team paid very close attention to scale, use of materials (many of which were recycled) and developed a vocabulary of modern interior detailing that would complement the original house. Specific program requirements for the project included: large entertainment spaces, gourmet kitchen with adjacent family room, a squash court, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, master suite, and plenty of storage space. In addition, since both adults work from home and receive clients in their offices, two offices needed to be created and it was critical to separate the work areas for the more private family spaces. The new silo, with central stair, became the element that allowed these different program needs to coexist effectively.

http://www.catherineandmcclure.com/condobostonview.html For this ocean-side home, located just outside of Boston, we drew our interior design inspiration from the west coast where interiors and exteriors co-exist effortlessly. We did not want anything to detract from the magnificent view. We used a minimalist interior design approach, choosing each piece of furniture, fabric, and accessory carefully and with great thought, so as not to let any one element stand out above the rest.

Surrounded by coastal upland forest, this residence was designed to co-exist with its surroundings. The house is situated on the southernmost end of the property with the majority of the property consisting of contiguous restored coastal woodland. The restored woodland beyond is an extension of the surrounding native vegetation. These layers of native plants and sizes emulate the native community of plants allowing for natural succession and long-term stability with minimal management.
