Sun-bleached wood, white sands, ivory-capped surfs and blue skies. This particular client loved the elements of the ocean and the mountains, so from there, we found inspiration. This home is reminiscent of a memorable family trip along the coast, an aesthetic created with the use of patterns that reflect soothing wind, shimmering sunlight and rippling waves. With waterside views gracing almost every window, we added our signature of understated casual elegance that is as pleasing to the eye as nature’s palette.

Placed within an idyllic beach community, this modern family home is filled with both playful and functional spaces. Natural light reflects throughout and oversized openings allow for movement to the outdoor spaces. Custom millwork completes the kitchen with concealed appliances, and creates a space well suited for entertaining. Accents of concrete add strength and architectural context to the spaces. Livable finishes of white oak and quartz are simple and hardworking. High ceilings in the bedroom level allowed for creativity in children’s spaces, and the addition of colour brings in that sense of playfulness. Art pieces reflect the owner’s time spent abroad, and exude their love of life – which is fitting in a place where the only boundaries to roam are the ocean and railways. Sometimes gathering is more about small groups standing around a bar catching up. In the basement, I wanted the bar to float so that it was easy to slide up a stool or simply stand without legs or walls getting in the way. Luckily we had two great steel lolly columns we were able to leverage as supports for the bar. Working with a local artisan we created industrial deco clamps, incorporating the same curve from the other custom made elements in the space, to clamp the reclaimed wood top to the steel columns. We were asked to help transform a cluttered, half-finished common area to an organized, multi-functional homework/play/lounge space for this family of six. They were so pleased with the desk setup for the kids, that we created a similar workspace for their office. In the midst of designing these living areas, they had a leak in their kitchen, so we jumped at the opportunity to give them a brand new one. This project was a true collaboration between owner and designer, as it was done completely remotely.
