Residence in Sunset SC Designed & built by Studio Kunstwerke, who unfortunately is no long is business Roof installed by a group of university student as a holiday project Tile: Pantile in Weathered Grey blend This was the second project we worked on with the designer and it certainly provided a number of challenges with curved eaves, raking gables and ridge tiles that were not parallel to the eaves. Northern met up with the installers who had zero experience of roofing or the installation of tiles, which it turned out was a huge advantage because they followed our instructions to the letter. The fact that one of the crew was a calculus major also helped when it came time to calculate the gauge for the battening. All in all they did an amazing job and it is only unfortunate that very few people who see the roof actually realize just how complicated some of the detailing was!

Walnut flooring in a herringbone pattern visually separates the great room from adjoining spaces. The recesses on either side of the fireplace have window seats that provide extra seating, which we recovered with deep blue nanotech performance fabric. Pale gray grasscloth wall covering adds texture while allowing the importance of the wood moldings to shine; the horizontal rhythm of the grasscloth is echoed in the area rug and the performance fabric of the sectional and loveseat, creating a variation on a theme. This four-story Victorian revival was amazing to see unfold; from replacing the foundation, building out the 1st floor, hoisting structural steel into place, and upgrading to in-floor radiant heat. This gorgeous “Old Lady” got all the bells and whistles. This quintessential Victorian presented itself with all the complications imaginable when bringing an early 1900’s home back to life. Our favorite task? The Custom woodwork: hand carving and installing over 200 florets to match historical home details. Anyone would be hard-pressed to see the transitions from existing to new, but we invite you to come and try for yourselves!

This early 20th century Indianapolis, IN basement remodel was in desperate need of help. The original and still operating hydronic radiant heating system had its plumbing configured without regard to any other use of the space. Fearful of harming the aged system and the high cost of doing so, these Clients were adamant that the existing system remain intact. Architect Lee Constantine developed a design that maintained the existing heating system while creating "niches" around the perimeter that would conceal the unsightly plumbing. Additionally, by removing free-standing structural supporting posts, amore flexible and inviting space was achieved. Because of an already low ceiling condition, the floor-ceiling structure above was kept exposed, painted and highlighted with indirect lighting to avoid further reducing the ceiling height. Constantine incorporated "clouds" on this ceiling to conceal certain existing components that either were cost prohibitive to relocate or couldn't be relocated. These "clouds"become a "visual element" through their geometry and hidden "indirect" light source rather than an undesirable complication. Now this family entertains frequently in the basement and reports "it doesn't feel like we're in a basement anymore"

The remodel of this 1930’s home was a balancing act between honoring the original style of the home and incorporating modern details for comfort and aesthetic. The remodel resulted in a 4,422 sf footprint that includes a master suite addition on the first floor, new hardwood flooring and natural stone tiles throughout the home, and smooth stucco exterior walls and landscape walls. The traditional style was modernized through the addition of steel exterior doors and windows. The complicated flashing and installation necessary for these doors and windows required thorough communication between Clark, the architect, and the window manufacturer. Some of the original framing members of the home were maintained, helping to keep the integrity of the original structure and design of the home. A traditional European look was invoked through details such as custom interior oak doors designed to sit flush with thick jambs.

Inspiration for a timeless beige two-story mixed siding house exterior remodel with a hip roof and a shingle roof

Oakland, CA: Addition and remodel to a rustic ranch home. The existing house had lovely woodwork but was dark and enclosed. The house borders on a regional park and our clients wanted to open up the space to the expansive yard, to allow views, bring in light, and modernize the spaces. New wide exterior accordion doors, with a thin screen that pulls across the opening, connect inside to outside. We retained the existing exposed redwood rafters, and repeated the pattern in the new spaces, while adding lighter materials to brighten the spaces. We positioned exterior doors for views through the whole house. Ceilings were raised and doorways repositioned to make a complicated and closed-in layout simpler and more coherent.

The renovation of this brownstone in Fort Green, Brooklyn was complicated by the discovery of deteriorated masonry in the rear yard extension. Forced to rebuild the extension from the ground floor up, the design was able to then articulate a new clean volume with a vast picture window that wraps the corner, effectively bringing the yard into the kitchen. The History Modernized project was designed to solve the problem of a complicated and confined kitchen space in a beautiful turn of the century home. Our clients need for functionality, maximum use of space, and beauty led us to an amazing split kitchen design that allowed for two usable, overlapping work zones in an odd and elongated space. Within this design we were able to open the kitchen to the existing dining area and create bar seating on the dining room side of the kitchen while modernizing the openness of the plan. Personally, we think function and Beauty tied on this one!

Duplex Y is located in a multi apartment building, typical to the Carmel mountain neighborhoods. The building has several entrances due to the slope it sits on. Duplex Y has its own separate entrance and a beautiful view towards Haifa bay and the Golan Heights that can be seen on a clear weather day. The client - a computer high-tech couple, with their two small daughters asked us for a simple and functional design that could remind them of their frequent visits to central and northern Europe. Their request has been accepted. Our planning approach was simple indeed, maybe even simple in a radical way: We followed the principle of clean and ultra minimal spaces, that serve their direct mission only. Complicated geometry of the rooms has been simplified by implementing built-in wood furniture into numerous niches. The most 'complicated' room (due to its broken geometry, narrow proportions and sloped ceiling) has been turned into a kid's room shaped as a clean 'wood box' for fun, games and 'edutainment'. The storage room has been refurbished to maximize it's purpose by creating enough space to store 90% of the entire family's demand. We've tried to avoid unnecessary decoration. 97% of the design has its functional use in addition to its atmospheric qualities.
