The back garden was conceived as a spiritual meditation garden. It's laid out as three interlocking ellipses, each raised 6" from the previous. The links speak to life struggles, and ascent to a higher spiritual plateau. Perennials with warmer colors are sited around the first link, with flowers eventually turned to a pure white and royal purples and blues in the last and highest link. There's also a walking path around the perimeter of this garden.

A warm toned gravel, stone edging to compliment the house (Brandon Breaux), stone fountain (Ginger Barber) and plenty of lawn. A collaborative effort that resulted in a well conceived space.

We conceived the stairs as heavy, but floating wood planks that defy gravity. Glass guardrails were used to maintain the openness of the modest sized space and further highlight the treads. MAKE Architecture | www.makearch.com | 323-669-0278

The framed white shutters have frosted glass infills. The wardrobe doors are conceived in a variety of configurations and with ample scope for personalisation.

Modernism and traditionalism are just steps away from each other at this Vienna Virginia pool house. The main house, built by a national homebuilder, draws upon tradition, but the pool house, speaks the language of contemporary minimalism. It presents clean lines and a soaring roofline overhanging tall glass doors and clerestory windows. Great design, careful attention to detail, first-rate materials and impeccable craftsmanship have yielded a spectacular solution for outdoor entertaining. With a fireplace and every conceivable convenience under roof, this pool house might just be the perfect escape for inclement weather as well. Designed by the homeowner with my help. Originally conceived going to ceiling, but then lowered. Five lockers for five family members. Shoe drawers are very large for basically piling in the shoes. But there is also an adjustable shelf in the bottom of each locker, under which more shoes can be placed that may need more protection.

A bright and airy two-and-a-half story living room is conceived to let indirect northern light inside the space, while framing views of the trees and the sky. A high, narrow window allows light into the west, and frames views of distant tree-tops, while the glazed atrium provides transparency and a closer look to the interior garden. A fire-place flanked by wood shelving provides a focal point at the western end of the room.

Conceived as an exterior extension of the interior living and entertaining spaces, the pool garden is fun and dynamic - especially in the evening. White pool tile and blocky granite give subtle reference to the building’s history as an ice collection and storage facility.
