Completed in 2018, this Westlake Hills duplex designed by Alterstudio Architects underwent a dramatic transformation by mixing light & airy with dark & moody design. The goal of the project was to create a more intimate environment using a more saturated and dramatic palette. Additionally it draws from warmer wood tones such as walnut alongside luxurious textures, particularly in navy, dark grey to emerald green. The Madera's Study exudes a contemporary and stylish ambiance with its thoughtful design. The client's brief called for an early childhood development centre which would accommodate 122 learners and requested that the building be evident of it's young and playful users. Curiosity, wonder and intrigue would become defining criteria in an attempt to create a conducive learning environment for young learners to grow, a building where children would be encouraged to interact with their environment. The construction methodology of the building would remain apparent, allowing its users to analyse the assembly of components. Due to the age group of the users, the building would need to function semi-autonomously from the rest of the school, while allowing for controlled interaction and inclusivity as is the norm for Mitchell House. A linear plan which coincides with the developmental progress of the learners was identified as the appropriate building typology. The spatial constraints of the site required this plan to be moulded into the available space between the existing infrastructure, however the linear process was maintained. From the access-controlled reception and administration area one would move past the creative arts and exhibition space towards the Northern wing where the youngest learners are taught. These would share connected ablutions and storerooms between classes to enable fluid movement and assistance throughout the teaching and service spaces. The East wing of the centre would house the elder learners who would be in the process of being integrated with the fabric of the main school campus. These classrooms include storage areas, however, have separate ablution facilities. The two wings of the building surround a courtyard where play and interaction are in abundance.

This unique home office features the rounded window wall and gorgeous dome ceiling accented in metallic champagne/light bronze finish. The desk is built into the curve of the wall and allows plenty of workspace for 2. The dark hardwood floors give a rustic accent and further distinguishes this area from the travertine floors throughout most of the home.

This photo illustrates the home recording studio we created for this client in what used to be an attic. Client wanted to have a coal booth set up for bringing her church group in to record tracks and practice.

This kitchen replaced the one original to this 1963 built residence. The now empty nester couple entertain frequently including their large extended family during the holidays. Separating work and social spaces was as important as crafting a space that was conducive to their love of cooking and hanging with family and friends. Simple lines, simple cleanup, and classic tones create an environment that will be in style for many years. Subtle unique touches like the painted wood ceiling, pop up island receptacle/usb and receptacles/usb hidden at the bottom of the upper cabinets add functionality and intrigue. Ample LED lighting on dimmers both ceiling and undercabinet mounted provide ample task lighting. SubZero 42” refrigerator, 36” Viking Range, island pendant lights by Restoration Hardware. The ceiling is framed with white cove molding, the dark colored beadboard actually elevates the feeling of height. It was sanded and spray painted offsite with professional automotive paint equipment. It reflects light beautifully. No one expects this kind of detail and it has been quite fun watching people’s reactions to it. There are white painted perimeter cabinets and Walnut stained island cabinets. A high gloss, mostly white floor was installed from the front door, down the foyer hall and into the kitchen.
