In the Llubí garden, our landscape design focuses on creating an aesthetic, functional, and sustainable space. We have prioritized water conservation by avoiding lawns and meadows in favor of a large gravel area. Next to the house wall, we have installed gravel stabilizers to create an ideal space for placing tables for breakfast or snacks. This area features an umbrella situated at the highest point of the garden, offering a panoramic view and allowing for full enjoyment of the surroundings. To break the monotony of the gravel, we have introduced islands of rosemary and lavender, alternating these plants in five long and narrow islands, approximately 7 meters by 2 meters each. These plants will grow, partially covering the gravel and providing a contrasting color with the sea gravel. Additionally, we have created five islands of various wildflowers that will grow and cover the ground, serving as points of flowering. In the center of the garden, we have incorporated a fireplace, creating a perfect space for extraordinary moments with family and friends. Around this central area, we have planted three jacarandas, providing points of shade in the garden. The garden’s design aims to be low maintenance, highlighting wildflowers and creating areas with a high density of these plants, which gives the space a wild and natural character. This approach allows for the enjoyment of a garden that reflects natural beauty with minimal intervention.

Next to the house wall, we have installed gravel stabilizers to create an ideal space for placing tables for breakfast or snacks. This area features an umbrella situated at the highest point of the garden, offering a panoramic view and allowing for full enjoyment of the surroundings. To break the monotony of the gravel, we have introduced islands of rosemary and lavender, alternating these plants in five long and narrow islands, approximately 7 meters by 2 meters each. These plants will grow, partially covering the gravel and providing a contrasting color with the sea gravel. Additionally, we have created five islands of various wildflowers that will grow and cover the ground, serving as points of flowering. In the center of the garden, we have incorporated a fireplace, creating a perfect space for extraordinary moments with family and friends. Around this central area, we have planted three jacarandas, providing points of shade in the garden. The garden’s design aims to be low maintenance, highlighting wildflowers and creating areas with a high density of these plants, which gives the space a wild and natural character. This approach allows for the enjoyment of a garden that reflects natural beauty with minimal intervention.

In the Llubí garden, our landscape design focuses on creating an aesthetic, functional, and sustainable space. We have prioritized water conservation by avoiding lawns and meadows in favor of a large gravel area. Our Poetic Period Sanctuary Project, was a philanthropic endeavour which saw us transforming a bedroom in the historically significant United Arts Club. The Club tucked within one of Dublin’s most historically creative quarters required a careful approach to preserving the distinct atmosphere of one of the bedrooms of this Georgian relic. We set about reimagining the space with respectful flair engaging in a careful dialogue between the building’s historical character and a more contemporary design language, our signature style, Polished Eclecticism.

Selecting native plants to border an irrigated lawn requires a thoughtful approach. These plants not only thrive in this environment but also attract pollinators to the strategically placed dwarf fruit trees, which will also benefit from the additional nearby irrigation. This very large corner site was shrouded in tired and thirsty conventional lawn. Really a bland, uninteresting monoculture—impossible to maintain especially in light of our dwindling resources and our growing understanding about sustainable practices. We chose to approach this project not with the idea that existing lawn is bad, but with respect for what lawn has historically represented: a socially connective tissue. Instead of conventional grass requiring endlessly large amounts of water, chemicals and mowing, this lawn conversion shifts to a naturalistic native meadow mix splashed with wildflowers and drought tolerant native shrubs. It was the clients’ desire to be wrapped by a garden attracting native pollinators and beneficial insects. A wildlife photographer, they wanted the opportunity to open windows and doors and feel immediately connected to a coastal native environment. The handsome new stone walls, stairs and massive boulders became the structural framework containing the loose, coastal sage scrub plant community, holding the landscape together during the dormant months. As we continue to grow our acceptance of and appreciation for climate appropriate California gardens, and embrace the paradigm shift, let us graciously bid adieu to our home’s unsustainable velvet robe.

After years of searching for the perfect spot to build their cabin in Hood River Valley, Oregon, Risa discovered a defunct state park for sale known as Dimmick Park. Originally spanning 22 acres, the park had been flooded in the 1980s and was later traded to the Western River Conservancy. To protect the East Fork of the Hood River that boarders the property, the conservancy imposed restrictions on the deed before listing it for sale. Risa and her family, along with her brother-in-law’s family teamed up to purchase the property. They chose the cabin’s site to take advantage of the best possible view of the majestic Mt. Hood to the south. For several years, the two families camped on the land in a vintage Airstream and a refurbished shipping container while designing and building the house. Construction began shortly after the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, and the cabin took shape with the help of subcontractors and a lot of sweat equity. Designed to accommodate the two families as a weekend retreat, the cabin features a bedroom and bathroom at each end and a double-height living space in between. An upper level includes a den and a bunk room connected by a steel and wood staircase and bridge. The house opens up to a view overlooking a meadow, complemented by an in-ground pool and a cedar hot tub that enhance the outdoor space. The simple form of the house was inspired by the classic barn structures commonly found in the surrounding orchards and farmlands. With a tight budget, much of the finishing work was completed by the two families themselves. Risa’s brother-in-law, a GC who has a steel shop, fabricated and installed all the metalwork, contributing significantly to the project’s personal and budget-conscious approach.

Its evergreen allure adds a refreshing contrast against the hardscape elements. 5. Bountiful Flora and Fauna: Carefully curated plants and trees have been strategically placed to add depth, color, and texture to the landscape. This selection of vegetation creates a dynamic environment that evolves with the changing seasons. 6. Reimagined Decomposed Granite Areas: The introduction of new decomposed granite areas not only complements the modern design but also adds a natural element to the landscape. This material harmonizes beautifully with the surroundings, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. 7. Subtle Landscape Lighting: Landscape lighting has been thoughtfully incorporated to illuminate the space during the evening hours. This subtle and strategic lighting transforms the landscape into a captivating visual delight after sunset. 8. Refreshed Wood Fence: To frame the space with a touch of warmth, the wood fence has been sanded and re-stained. This careful restoration preserves the natural charm of the fence while seamlessly aligning it with the contemporary redesign.
