Whistler BuilderWe were asked to update a modest, out-dated cabin into a modern comfortable home where our clients could gather with family and friends. Although they wanted to retain the charm and character of the old home, they knew they needed to do some extensive renovation.

Smith & Ragsdale Interior DesignWhile this new home had an architecturally striking exterior, the home’s interior fell short in terms of true functionality and overall style. The most critical element in this renovation was the kitchen and dining area, which needed careful attention to bring it to the level that suited the home and the homeowners.
As a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, our client wanted a kitchen that “feels like a restaurant, with the warmth of a home kitchen,” where guests can gather over great food, great wine, and truly feel comfortable in the open concept home. Although it follows a typical chef’s galley layout, the unique design solutions and unusual materials set it apart from the typical kitchen design.
Polished countertops, laminated and stainless cabinets fronts, and professional appliances are complemented by the introduction of wood, glass, and blackened metal – materials introduced in the overall design of the house. Unique features include a wall clad in walnut for dangling heavy pots and utensils; a floating, sculptural walnut countertop piece housing an herb garden; an open pantry that serves as a coffee bar and wine station; and a hanging chalkboard that hides a water heater closet and features different coffee offerings available to guests.
The dining area addition, enclosed by windows, continues to vivify the organic elements and brings in ample natural light, enhancing the darker finishes and creating additional warmth.

Bailiwick Interior DesignUpgrading the bathroom in this client's circa 1950s home required thoughtful consideration of the small space available. Elements of the home that had once been considered "modern" were now outdated and no longer functional (like the over-sized medicine cabinets and small closets). But the homeowner's eclectic style allowed us to still incorporate some classic mid-century elements that paid homage to the home's age, while enhancing the functionality of the space. Using a floating vanity and a corner shower allowed us to fit everything into the small footprint AND give her a walk-in closet next door - something she would never have dreamed of before!
Northwest Native Landscapes LLCDramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

Interior Enhancement GroupWe love sourcing local furnishings, whether we are working close to home in the Chicago area or out of state. They bring a sense of place and authenticity to a home. In this case, our clients discovered local painters at an art fair and we commissioned them to create wall art throughout the home, including this piece in the foyer. Proportion was another consideration for this soaring stairway. We selected tall, bamboo branches for the clay pot and a large, open chandelier to balance the two-story space.

Frontier Landscaping IncThis Parade of Homes patio view is enhanced by the textured beauty of nature. Fresh plantings are carefully spaced to allow mature growth in coming seasons.
Use of accent rockery and boulders throughout the landscape give texture and dimension. Since moss, plants, and grasses grow naturally around boulders and water in nature, including those soft elements here brings true beauty in the view.
A thick layer of bark dust is attractive and functional. Applied correctly, it helps suppress weeds and keeps moisture around the plants.
Additional considerations for this patio include plantings that are attractive for hummingbirds, evergreens to screen for privacy (which also create bird habitat), and ornamental grasses and flowers to soften the angles of the home.
