Few things are more time-honored than the classic contrast combo of black and white, or Frosty White and Ebony. This white oak kitchen captures it all and achieves it with grace! John of @shannslaughter described the remodel by saying, “Our house is small, old, and completely lacking standard measurements, square edges, etc. The ability to get the cabinets made to exact specifications let us maximize our available space.” The long, narrow pullout units to the right of the fridge, custom wine storage, and a window bench are examples of how storage is artfully integrated into the heart of this home. The matching countertop and backsplash and black island chairs weave consistency and nuance into this fabulous remodel.

Our client's childhood memories of summer fun in her parents' pool and family time on Long Beach Island, NJ is what she wanted to recreate for her own children in the comfort of their backyard. The client's wish list included a pool that was versatile for all ages and activities. We teamed up with Liquidscapes to assist with the pool design process to ensure functionality and quality was achieved. The saltwater pool has a swim lane, sun-shelf, deck jets, built-in seating and a raised spa with an 8' spillway!
The pool deck is built with limestone, which remains cool in the hot sun. A custom pavilion cantilevers the deep end of the pool serving as a shady poolside lounge. The wavy garden beds were designed to complement the freeform shape of the pool. The landscape consists of multi-layered magnolias, ilex, and cryptomeria to ensure privacy year round. Fagus, lagerstroemia, and cotinus add in-season privacy, color, and contrast. The large garden beds are filled with lush hydrangeas, perennials, perennial grasses, and ferns.
During our presentation for the front of the property, which is the final phase of this project, our client said to us: "Over the years we have dealt with many design and build companies and we're very happy we finally found one that is a pleasure to work with and cares about delivering high quality results.”

Carmel Valley Retreat is a hilltop residence in Carmel Valley, California, designed to feel deeply embedded in its landscape. The home’s orientation was shaped by sun patterns, prevailing winds, existing vegetation, and carefully framed views toward the Pacific, with detailed site analysis guiding its placement on the land. Shared living spaces are organized separately from more private guest and primary suites, creating a gradual progression from communal to secluded areas. A restrained palette of board-formed concrete, natural stone, and vertical wood slats gives the home a timeless, tactile quality, while planted roofs filled with native grasses restore the hill’s natural contours and reinforce the connection between architecture and landscape.
The project also reflects the challenge of building well in San Francisco, where code and review pressures often compromise design quality. We worked strategically to protect the home’s clarity and character, while knowing where to concede to keep the project moving.
Material consistency drives the experience. From the entry’s custom stone slab and bronze mail panel to the sculpted stair and built-in millwork, every detail is custom-sourced and precisely crafted. The palette is quiet but rich: white oak, warm metal, clean stone.
