When clients in Williamsburg, Va. Purchased a brick ranch, built in the late 80’s They knew they were in for a total gut rehab. The kitchen had been updated but consisted of reddish stained oak cabinets, Corian counters, and soffits galore. The room was separated by a peninsula with a cook top, creating a U-shaped configuration. It was not only dated but separated the room from the breakfast area. One wall consisted of wall ovens, a pantry, and a built-in desk space. Although, we were constrained to a tight budget, they specifically requested the house not have a traditional colonial vibe, common to the locality. Once we convinced the husband that it was paramount to remove walls, we were able to reimagine the space. The wall ovens were replaced with a single range, the refrigerator was placed on the same wall as the sink and the soffits were removed. With a tight budget, custom cabinets were not an option. Instead, they purchased stock cabinets that were painted a cool gray and the new island is stained in a natural finish . Typically, I don’t recycle products amongst clients, but these pendants have proven otherwise. After installing them in my own kitchen, I’ve had 3 other client requests for the same pair. Obviously, they don’t disappoint as they are the crown jewels of the kitchen.

This customer came to us after a series of unfortunate health issues. They were having health complications that would simply not clear up. After seeing on the news that certain hardwood floors can cause the symptoms they were experiencing, the homeowner started shopping for a responsible, domestically manufactured hardwood floor that could be trusted. With our strict manufacturing standards, we were excited to re-do their hardwoods with this American-made product. The result? The homeowner's medical issues completely went away almost immediately. These clients (who were referred by their realtor) are lucky enough to escape the brutal Minnesota winters. They trusted the PID team to remodel their home with Landmark Remodeling while they were away enjoying the sun and escaping the pains of remodeling... dust, noise, so many boxes. The clients wanted to update without a major remodel. They also wanted to keep some of the warm golden oak in their space...something we are not used to! We landed on painting the cabinetry, new counters, new backsplash, lighting, and floors. We also refaced the corner fireplace in the living room with a natural stacked stone and mantle. The powder bath got a little facelift too and convinced another victim... we mean the client that wallpaper was a must.

When friends heard that we were planning to build a new home (especially at our time in life) we were regaled with stories of frustration, mistakes, and financial complications. We were convinced it was right to build a small efficient home, so the stories were dismissed with the conviction that we would find the RIGHT general contractor to avoid the pitfalls of home construction. Our decision to use Todd Swanson and Bio-Hab Inc. reflected our desire to use natural, energy efficient materials and systems, to stay small, and to work with a contractor expressing honesty, open-ness, and common sense. We began by working with a designer and Todd in our house design. Todd collaborated with the designer to not only make the design more beautiful and functional, but also practical to construct. We are very pleased with the finished product and love our home. It was easy AND a pleasure to work with Todd. We appreciated his high standard sub contractors and lead men- not only were they professional, they were cheerful to have around! This was a screen porch with double French doors opening into the dining room and a single door opening into the kitchen. I sat down and had a little chat with my client.. I told him that he rarely enjoyed using the porch for the summers are so hot and the winters are so cold. I convinced him to close it in. We hired an artist to come in and stain the floor a checker-board pattern. My client spends most of his time here now... with all windows, the view of his gardens are stunning. He had a medium size flat screen TV installed up in the corner. My client is very, very happy!

The combination of white and wood-stained cabinets with the wide-plank, wood floor creates a warm-cool “temperature” in this suburban Chicago bachelor’s kitchen. It also fulfilled my client’s desire for walnut wood elements. For architectural interest and heft, I added crown molding to all of the cabinetry. The crisp edges of the raised-panel cabinets, the countertops and the cabinet hardware give the space masculine appeal without going overboard. I convinced my client to choose durable, easily maintained Dekton countertops instead of the marble he requested, which can be a high-maintenance surface. Nestled on the shore of New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, is a family’s winter ski retreat. Contrary to the norm, this vacation home sees more use in the winter months than in the summer season. Breathtaking views of Mount Washington against a backdrop of shoreline dominate the scene; this vista was a driving force in the decision-making process. Doors and windows on the lakeside of the house were enlarged and expanded on to enhance the owners’ appreciation of their vantage point. The homeowners embraced, with a bit of convincing, a dark blue trim color for the exterior rather than the ubiquitous forest green common in the White Mountains. What began as a small renovation project morphed into a full renovation; the location warranted the upgrade. The client’s trust in the design team resulted in a home that is unique: contemporary while still offering the warmth and coziness of a winter retreat. The introduction of soft wood tones, a custom copper kitchen hood, and a warm muted color palate for interior trim and doors brings a coziness to the space without evoking a mountain ski lodge. The materials chosen further enhanced the natural elements of the site location: organic features include an antler chandelier, salvaged wood throughout for the mantel, ceilings, stair newels, and interior barn doors, and a live edge built-in bench in the mudroom. Spaces were designed to encourage family interaction and togetherness. The importance of solitude was thoughtfully crafted into the architecture and interiors of the family’s vacation home. SV Design made sure there were spaces where individual family members can pursue their own interests: a dedicated craft space, a family office, and a kids’ loft area. The redesign was forward thinking, to take the family into future phases in life, from the current teenage years through college years, and into the beyond of expanded family possibilities.

Our clients wanted to make the most of space so we gutted the home and rebuilt the inside to create a functional and kid-friendly home with timeless style. Our clients’ vision was clear: They wanted a warm and timeless design that was easy to clean and maintain with two-active boys. “It’s not unusual for our friends and family to drop past unannounced any day of the week. And we love it!” They told us during our initial Design Therapy Sesh. We knew immediately what she meant - we have an open-door policy with our families, too! Which was why we consciously created living spaces that were open, inviting and welcoming. Now, the only problem our clients would have would be convincing their guests to leave! DESIGN + INNOVATION: Award of Excellence and GREEN DESIGN CITATION PROJECT: RE_VIEW CLIENT: CMU School of Architecture, CMU BxA Staff, Bloomfield Garfield Corporation ARCHITECTURE FIRM: Urban Design Build Studio DESCRIPTION: Due to three major factors – vacancy, view, and affordability – Pittsburgh’s housing situation is ripe with the opportunity to leverage privileged views and increase thermal performance. The RE_VIEW wall system was designed to create expansive views, improve energy efficiency, and bring aesthetic features that all add to the market value of a home while being easily replicable. Features such as prefabricated modules, high density insulation, and an in-depth understanding of construction and installation methods were all considered to evaluate the effectiveness of the RE_VIEW system. JURY COMMENTS: The jury appreciated how the project encompasses urban analysis, architectural detail, sustainability, and also, ideas about fabrication while tying them together in a convincing way. This purposeful innovation to makes existing houses more useable and livable. The jury also awarded the Green Design Citation to the project because it can repurpose and bring new value to existing housing, offering an alternative to demolition and replacement.

Ivan Muller Photography A garage with a twist - still safe for parking that very expensive vehicle but in terms of design value, an outstanding space worthy of a proper stare... yes, lets linger for a moment shall we? The garage – noun – a building for housing a motor vehicle or vehicles. That’s it? Really? No features? *Usually not decorated and possibly quite boring. *A room with a large door allowing a car to safely enter and exit the space. *May be purposed for storing other items beside vehicles. *May be a very neat, organised space with loads of shelving and cabinets. *Can also be an unorganized space filled with clutter. In this case the focus is on art. It is just about too beautiful to be a garage. One almost get the feeling that you want to linger in the open door for a while longer to appreciate the splendor before safely parking the car. Collaboration is key! It takes the vision of a single person setting a snowball into motion, delivering an outcome that is above and beyond all expectation. Do you need more reason to be convinced of the benefits of having an Interior Designer on speed dial? The [colored] back wall was done by The Singing Palette company – an abstract of Johannesburg skyline built up with 4mm plaster to create a 3D effect. The [black and white with blue] side wall is covered in a street scene wallpaper with digitally printed photographic images applied to two perspex panels, manufactured by The Cow Artworks and Just-Us Crafts. Who would have thought that art belongs in a garage? Only an Interior Designer? Deborah perhaps? Now, which car would YOU leave in this garage? I have my favorite, what is yours?
