Sometimes things just happen organically. This client reached out to me in a professional capacity to see if I wanted to advertise in his new magazine. I declined at that time because as team we have chosen to be referral based, not advertising based. Even with turning him down, he and his wife decided to sign on with us for their basement... which then upon completion rolled into their main floor (part 2). They wanted a very distinct style and already had a pretty good idea of what they wanted. We just helped bring it all to life. They wanted a kid friendly space that still had an adult vibe that no longer was based off of furniture from college hand-me-down years. Since they loved modern farmhouse style we had to make sure there was shiplap and also some stained wood elements to warm up the space. This space is a great example of a very nice finished basement done cost-effectively without sacrificing some comforts or features.

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, CO, United States This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse is our first “regenerative home,” producing more energy than it consumes. This 3,900 s.f. custom home uses passive solar design, 10.2kW of solar photovoltaics, a ground source heat pump, double wall well-insulated exterior envelope, high performance doors and windows, to achieve a HERS negative 8 rating and Energy Star v.3.0 certification. The interior has low-VOC finishes and custom built-in FSC-certified wood and beetle kill pine cabinets throughout. The site is designed to be very low water use, incorporating permaculture and urban farming, with raised planting beds and a passive solar chicken coop/greenhouse. What makes this project special is its combination of extraordinary sustainability with conventionally attractive, cost-effective design tailored to the owner’s needs.

Michael Hunter Photography We transformed this outdated drab master bathroom into a dramatic space reflecting the owner's desire for strong colors to contrast against the white cabinets and neutral tones in the wall and floor tiles. We selected a wall covering featuring bold black and metallic stripes and damasks complimenting the metallic finish on the copper bronze cast iron claw-foot tub. We replaced the drop-in tub and surround with a limestone tile wall to support a wall mounted faucet for the claw-foot bathtub and added a palm to create a relaxing alcove. Replacing the original fixtures and hardware with updated oil rubbed bronze versions completed a cost effective renovation.

Six basic design options for additions Exterior structure additions, include sunrooms, florida rooms, porches, verandas, lanais, decks or a balcony and give you living spaces that allow you to experience the outdoors and enjoy both relaxing and entertaining. Bump-out additions are small additions which extend a wall a few feet to create areas like an eat-in kitchen. They can expand a small room or add a more favorable appeal to your home overall. Single-room additions add one room to your home. Homeowners often add single room additions that are home offices, home theaters, master bedrooms, family rooms, laundry or mud rooms, master suites, guest rooms, etc. Wing additions expand your home horizontally and are good choices when you need more than a single room. Examples of additions would include au-pair, in-law, or guest suites and can contain a bedroom, living area and small kitchen. Wings sometimes have separate entrances and even parking. This is great option if your lot has the appropriate space. Second-story additions are a great way to cost effectively maximize your living space by adding a second level which share the same roof and foundation. In many cases this is a favorable way to avoid zoning restrictions and allow you to avoid a lot survey. A second-story addition can increase the functionality, value and comfort of your home, without causing you to give up lawn and garden area. Two-story additions are another way to resolve space issues. Common examples would include adding a garage and an additional bedroom as a second story. We were hired to design and build another great acreage project in Okotoks which utilized a large retaining wall to create more usable patio space for our clients and their family. Using man-made boulders and pavers from the same company and color palette made for a beautiful and consistent look that was cost effective and efficient. This separated the septic system and kept it out of sight as well as created a cozy area for summer family get togethers.

This project was do in collaboration with my friends at Sweetwater Collaborative. Sweetwater Collaborative is a non-profit organization that work to educate the public about water wise and regenerative landscape practices. Funded by the City of Santa Barbara as well as several other business and agency Sweetwater Collaborative and I worked to installed this project with the help of volunteers. In a hands-on work shop we explained principles of water wise gardening and demonstrated best practices when installing sustainable landscapes. When the owner of this property decided to build an ADU ( Auxiliary Dwelling Unit) in their back yard they expanded the roof line of their property. In order to be in compliance with new California building the project required that a portion of the rain water coming onto this property must be stored on the property. That is where we came into help. Directing down spouts into basins, or swales in the soil is one of the most efficient and cost-effective way to capture and store rain water on a piece of land. Calculations were done to determine the volume of water coming of the roof line in a given rain event from the ADU. The calculations go: square footage of roofline times .62 times 1, for 1” of rain. That total gives you the amount of water in gallons. Then divide the number in gallons by 7.48 find the cubic feet in that number of gallons. Then a basin with that holding capacity was designed into the landscape. Then the plantings were chosen. In this project we went with an 100% California Native Plant palette. We did this to help educate people about all the benefits of growing natives and to show case some of the beautiful plants native to Southern California. Sothern California is how to some of the greatest biodiversity of plants in the world. Native Plants are best adapted to thrive conditions from which they are natively found plus they help provide forage to the native fauna such as birds and insects. Now the tenants in the ADU can look out and enjoy this colorful garden without the home owners needing to pay a huge water bill.

The stair stringers were replaced and new steps installed. The homeowners opted for aluminum with pickets on the landing and down the staircase. This is extremely cost effective, as it minimizes the number of start-and-stops in the cable.

Small Galley kitchen in Sonoma, CA. This little budget job was done with Ikea cabinets that were customized to fit the space (ie, stacked upper cabinets to create a shallow pantry). The bright red range creates a focal point while open shelves offer upper storage without invading the small space.

Entering the home through a floor-to-ceiling full light pivoting front door provides a sense of grandeur that continues through the home with immediate sightlines through the 16-foot wide sliding door at the opposite wall. The distinct black window frames provide a sleek modern aesthetic while providing European performance standards. The Glo A5h Series with double-pane glazing outperforms most North American triple pane windows due to high performance spacers, low iron glass, a larger continuous thermal break, and multiple air seals. By going double-pane the homeowners have been able to realize tremendous efficiency and cost effective durability while maintaining the clean architectural lines of the home design.
