For this Chelsea loft, we sought to engage the space's clean, spare lines with several pieces of custom furniture. Materials were selected for their sustainability, durability, and beauty. A steel and rift oak sideboard complements a 14-foot dining table and bench crafted from whole planks of white oak. Steel and rift oak also create a series of custom storage units in the home office. This kitchen has zones for the whole family to be together, but engaging in different activities. The extended island offers ample prep space on the kitchen side and adequate seating on the living room side. Eliminating wall cabinets and combining storage into tall cabinets means everything is accessible to family members without tripping over each other in the food prep zone. The wood slat dividers are a nod to mid-century modern, but appropriate for 21st century living. The wood slats create a barrier to the dining room, while allowing light from the large front windows.

A small modern addition to an existing AU_120608_Stack_Bauer Res_478919th century single-family residence in Roslindale, MA. The new building element has a very light touch on the site, as it accommodates challenging existing grading conditions by straddling them on pier footings. A light-filled sitting/flex space, new full bath, and custom exterior deck engage with the rear of a carefully landscaped, deep lot and adjoining natural, wooded parcel. The depth of the existing lot was preserved, by resisting the urge to expand the building along its gable axis – and instead creating new livable space perched out over the slope down to an adjoining wooded parcel.

The building is designed to engage the client’s passions for gardening, entertaining and restoring vintage Vespa scooters. The Vespa repair shop and garage are on the first floor. The second floor houses a home office and veranda. On top is a roof deck with space for lounging and outdoor dining, surrounded by a vegetable garden in raised planters. The structural steel frame of the building is left exposed; and the side facing the public side is draped with a mahogany screen that creates privacy in the building and diffuses the dappled light filtered through the trees. This view from the end of the bar showcases the new view into the kitchen after the structural modifications have been made. Notice how the far window is no longer obstructed by the refrigerator and the large windows in the breakfast area are also unobstructed. This is one of the key factors in creating a bright, open floor plan. The updated floor plan also allows a clear view of the breakfast and bar area from the cook station. This is perfect for the cook to be engaged with guests while prepping, cooking, and washing dishes at the sink without be secluded by a dividing wall. Client envisioned a home that capitalized on the views with minimal disruption to the desert landscape—mainly native saguaro cacti and massive rock outcroppings. The house presents a truly biophilic design—from the entry courtyard through all the rooms in the house—merging indoors and outdoors and emphasizing natural materials while creating a unique sense of place. A large, curved steel trellis and the custom-designed massive glass and metal entry door echo the curves of the rugged mountainous terrain. The house interior exudes a feeling of grandeur, displaying open, expansive spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and heavily wood-beamed ceilings blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.

A covered porch addition creates a peaceful and harmonious outdoor living area. The artisan-crafted timberwork frames the views overlooking the pool terrace and lawn. A family of five, who live in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20 year old kitchen. She was tired of the bleached look on her kitchen, and now was looking for light but updated look at her kitchen. She also did not want to deal with having a cook top in her Island and wanted professional appliances and better traffic pattern. Challenges: The bulkheads were stuffed with lots of duct work and plumbing. All need to be relocated in order to take advantage of the height. The kitchen was over a very tight crawl space area that made access to run gas line, and plumbing line much more challenging. Adjacent family room needed to become part of this grand plan and as part of the oval scheme of work tie into kitchen cabinetry. Design Solutions: The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. The back wall of the kitchen now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. New tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. New plumbing was run for prep. Sink in the new island in order to have a second cook can work in the kitchen. The large contrasting Island in a Dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. Also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this kitchen. Just to the west of this kitchen, we used to have a bare was with a 36” fireplace in it. Our goal was to get all surrounding walls involved with this renovation. Now the entirety of this wall in filled with lower cabinetry and upper display cabinetry and a working station at the end of the run. The fireplace was wrapped with matching color mantel and got equipped for a new large TV above it New cabinetry was added to butler area to harmonize with new kitchen. We have introduced a large size porcelain tile floor for entire family room and kitchen just to give it bigger space look and easy upon the traffic pattern. Outcome: The rare exotic counter top stone was the most favorite item in this kitchen for the homeowner. The way it connects with a brown glazing of the cabinetry and compliments the stone backsplash tile with an interesting picture frame inset niche above stove area is breathtaking. She is thrilled with the end result and cannot wait to celebrate her son’s engagement party in her new and exciting kitchen.

Our services were engaged to refurbish the guest bathroom, which over time had become the wife's main bathroom. The design was driven by our Client's desire for maximized storage space within the confines of this small room. Lighting was selected for both general and task functions, as well as to create ambiance. The custom vanity with quartz counter-top, accomplished the task of maximizing storage. The new walk-in shower features a wall-mounted, rain showerhead, a hand-held shower wand, sliding doors, and a sleek safety bar. The colour pallet is subtle, mostly consisting of white with coloured and textured accents to help open up the space. Even though the new bathroom was designed with one person in mind, it can easily accommodate shared use between four people when there are guest.

A new-renovation of a Beacon Hill townhouse gets a new look. It was clear from the beginning we needed to seamlessly meld old and new to bring a fresh approach to the interiors of this new home for a young family. Our client owned beautiful antiques and some well-loved, but worn pieces that had the right lines but needed a style upgrade. With a wonderful, engaged client we artfully edited, re-covered and added many new pieces to create a cohesive style with classic forms. Surrounded by trees to the north and old farm buildings, the Agnew Farmhouse naturally took shape to capture the expansive southern views of the prairie on which it resides. Inspired from the rural venacular of the property, the home was designed for an engaged couple looking to spend their days on the family farm. Built next to the original house on the property, a story of past, present, and future continues to be written. The south facing porch is shaded by the upper level and offers easy access from yard to the heart of the home. North Dakota offers challenging weather, so naturally a south-west facing garage to melt the snow from the driveway is often required. This also allowed for the the garage to be hidden from sight as you approach the home from the NE. Respecting its surroundings, the home emphasizes modern design and simple farmer logic to create a home for the couple to begin their marriage and grow old together. Island living is synonymous with entertaining, and engaging conversation and great food go hand-in-hand. Entertaining on a grand scale begins with making a statement. For smaller groups, create a look that offers up an invitation for a quaint gathering of family or friends.

Stunning materials and details such as cedar shake roofing, copper gutters and downspouts, and engaged columns grace the exterior, creating a warm and welcoming façade.

An Ohio family in search of a place to enjoy the Portuguese coast acquired a four-bedroom apartment just outside the center of Cascais. Our studio was engaged to turn a compartmented interior into a holiday residence for a household that gathers in numbers: one that could seat everyone at once and still hold the ease and lightness of a home by the beach. The original plan included a kitchen and laundry room sealed off from the living room, floor finishes and levels that changed from threshold to threshold, and bathrooms in varying styles. Work began by redefining the alignments and circulation. The principal transformation was the opening of the kitchen, creating a more generous social setting centered on a bespoke island fitted with storage and seating. The interior takes its cues from the building’s geometric façade, which projects and recedes in volumes and voids. Bespoke joinery in oak and lacquer carries continuity and order through the apartment. Concealed storage runs throughout: at the entrance, in the dining area, along the living area, and beneath built-in benches. The laundry is merged into the kitchen behind perforated doors for ventilation while keeping the service area discreet. Behind the sofa, a console slips a workspace into the living area without conceding its openness. Curved elements answer the rectilinear architecture; artisanal glazed vertical tiles repeat from the backsplashes onto custom side tables. The palette stays deliberately narrow; the muted oak and lacquer are joined by a softened timber floor, Portuguese Lioz stone, and walls painted to the color of bare plaster. Existing doors and baseboards were repainted in a warm light gray that draws the original elements into the language of the new interior. Upholstery and decorative accents hint at the terracotta, sky blue, and yellow of the façade. The bedrooms are set with upholstered headboards on oak frames, bedside tables that extend those outlines, and wardrobes fit for a long stay. Locally made rugs, bedcovers, and throw pillows soften the composition. In the bathrooms, the plans were reorganized and the showers enlarged. Lioz was used for the counters and sinks, shelves, shower bases, and bathtub surround, with microcement bringing a soothing warmth to the walls, and storage in floating cabinets. Deeper in tone than the rest of the apartment yet never dim, they are quietly elegant rooms made for lingering — taking one’s time getting ready, or unwinding at the end of a day.
