Archadeck of Chicagoland An upper level deck and screen porch combination provides both open air and sheltered living spaces for this lakefront property. The custom design work for the porch allowed us to seamlessly integrate it with the home, making the porch look as though it has always belonged. A flagstone patio was built below the deck. The natural stone creates the perfect transition from the home to the backyard, then down to the lake. Every piece of this project comes together to create a truly stunning view.

A multi-level southern yellow pine deck designed for durability, accessibility, and everyday outdoor living. This project features wide, well-proportioned stair runs, pressure-treated pine decking, and clean vertical baluster railings for a classic, functional appearance. The layout creates a smooth transition from the home to the yard while maintaining proper drainage, structural integrity, and long-term performance. Built with code-compliant framing and fastening, this deck delivers a timeless look with the strength and reliability of traditional pine construction.

Previn consisted of scraping grass down to dirt with a bobcat then work began on the deck. Posts were set, frame was built, and decking was put into place. After the deck was finished, a pergola was built on top of the structure, everything was pressure washed, then later stained. After the deck was stained, we dug out the rest of the area around the pool (not shown), all the way to the front in attempts to make a circle around the pool. A square was dug out of the ground, and butter sticks were put into place, barrier was put into place, and the fire pit constructed. Liner was placed down throughout the entire project site, and mulch was placed in both the back of the pool (not shown) from the back and side fence, circling the pool, and up to the deck. Cypress trees were planted around the pool, and various bushes along the mulch edge up against the deck by the ramp. Pavers were set into place to create a path around the patio and shadow rock was brought in, and spread all throughout remaining project area. In short: Demoed job site, added deck, added fire pit, added butter sticks, placed down liner, added metal edging, created borders, planted cypress trees, planted bushes, added mulch, added pavers, added shadow rock.

The scope opened with full site demolition: removal of approximately 20 existing plants, regrading for a new curved pony wall and mounded terrain, and excavation for a new river run. Existing granite was preserved and redistributed rather than removed, reducing waste and maintaining the site's established material palette. Hardscape & Structure A 20-linear-foot curved retention wall built from standard block with a stucco cap defines a planting border along the property edge. The facing side is clad in 45 square feet of stone veneer matched precisely to the home's exterior — a detail that ties the landscape directly to the architecture. Five 500-pound surface boulders are placed throughout the mounded areas, grounding the composition with natural scale and weight. River Run & Materials Three tons of 3"x6" rip rap create a dry river run that flows through the redesigned grade, channeling storm water naturally while adding texture and movement. Three tons of fill dirt support the contouring and mounding work, and approximately 17 tons of the site's original granite was respread across the finished landscape. Planting Design The plant palette is entirely desert-adapted. Twenty-six five-gallon desert shrubs and ground covers layer the mounded areas.
