This client's home backs up to a beautiful native Beech and Tulip woodland with an intermittent stream running through the middle of the site. After mistakenly over-clearing the natural forest saplings, the once lush woods was now bare. Called in to help re-vegetate the woodland, we designed and created a new path network through the woodland so that the client could enjoy and experience their new garden. Planted with large masses of native perennials, shade grasses and spring bulbs this back yard is now lush once again. This is an example of a farmhouse backyard stone landscaping in Philadelphia.

This project reimagines an under-used back yard in Portland, Oregon, creating an urban garden with an adjacent writer’s studio. Taking inspiration from Japanese precedents, we conceived of a paving scheme with planters, a cedar soaking tub, a fire pit, and a seven-foot-tall cedar fence. A maple tree forms the focal point and will grow to shade the yard. Board-formed concrete planters house conifers, maples and moss, appropriate to the Pacific Northwest climate. In this remodel, we added a coffered ceiling to the kitchen and opened up the space, by relocating the fireplace and removing some wing walls. Now the space is open from room to room, but the rooms are well defined by changes in ceiling detail and built ins. Joe Kwon Photography

This living room used to have a wall where the built in cabinet is. It was dark and felt cramped, so we opened the space and flanked the opening with 2 identical built-ins, giving our client a place to store china, for the adjacent dining room.
