The family purchased the 1950s ranch on Mullet Lake because their daughter dreamed of being married on its shores. The home would be used for the wedding venue and then as a wedding gift to the young couple. We were originally hired in August 2014 to help with a simple renovation of the home that was to be completed well in advance of the August 2015 wedding date. However, thorough investigation revealed significant issues with the original foundation, floor framing and other critical elements of the home’s structure that made that impossible. Based on this information, the family decided to tear down and build again. So now we were tasked with designing a new home that would embody their daughter’s vision of a storybook home – a vision inspired by another one of our projects that she had toured. To capture this aesthetic, traditional cottage materials such as stone and cedar shakes are accentuated by more materials such as reclaimed barn wood siding and corrugated CORTEN steel accent roofs. Inside, interior finishes include hand-hewn timber accents that frame openings and highlight features like the entrance reading nook. Natural materials shine against white walls and simply furnished rooms. While the house has nods to vintage style throughout, the open-plan kitchen and living area allows for both contemporary living and entertaining. We were able to capture their daughter’s vision and the home was completed on time for her big day. - Jacqueline Southby Photography

This French country, new construction home features a circular first-floor layout that connects from great room to kitchen and breakfast room, then on to the dining room via a small area that turned out to be ideal for a fully functional bar. Directly off the kitchen and leading to the dining room, this space is perfectly located for making and serving cocktails whenever the family entertains. In order to make the space feel as open and welcoming as possible while connecting it visually with the kitchen, glass cabinet doors and custom-designed, leaded-glass column cabinetry and millwork archway help the spaces flow together and bring in. The space is small and tight, so it was critical to make it feel larger and more open. Leaded-glass cabinetry throughout provided the airy feel we were looking for, while showing off sparkling glassware and serving pieces. In addition, finding space for a sink and under-counter refrigerator was challenging, but every wished-for element made it into the final plan. Photo by Mike Kaskel

The use of large plant material was critical, lending a sense of maturity and scale to the overall aesthetic. Gray-tinted concrete softens the look of the large semi-circular driveway.

A modern master bath gets its allure from the blend of solid and textured tiles placed horizontally across the backsplash and shower wall. Contrasting large format white tiles in the shower keeps the space light and bright. Affordable custom cabinets are achieved with a light wood-tone laminate cabinet.

Transitional u-shaped light wood floor enclosed kitchen photo in DC Metro with an undermount sink, recessed-panel cabinets, white cabinets, marble countertops and an island

Our designer has achieved a stylish look by combining dark cabinets and light-colored marbles.

The floor's circular motif was critical to the kitchen's unique curved island. The island's granite bar top drops down vertically into the motif which swirls around the room. The whole motif was hand-drawn onsite, input into a waterjet cutting system's software program for production, and finished off with stainless steel banding surrounding the entire work.

The client wanted a deck to be connected to the rest of the yard and transition to the upper deck 10ft of grade to the patio on grade. The centrally located circular kitchen area services both the patio and the upper deck and gives lots of options whether it’s just the family or a party for 50. Minimizing rails and stairs during the transition from the upper deck to the lower deck on grade was critical to the clients. Adding the kitchen to the project without obstructing the view out the rear patio doors was also an important request from the client. The WOLF PVC Black Walnut accents and fascia really sets off the Driftwood field. Dutch Quality weathered ledge stone was used in the kitchen with a granite counter. Custom welded aluminum rails and EP Henry Bristol pavers are also featured. The built in flower beds extend the feel of the patio area and allow for plantings to be added. This project turned an unusable back yard and disconnected elevated deck into cohesive multi-level living space.

Example of a trendy powder room design in New York with open cabinets, gray walls, a vessel sink and wood countertops

Using native Sycamore as the primary material, we designed this kitchen to create a sense of light and movement. The room’s energy arises from two features. First, the individual cabinets are defined by their placement and their changing heights. Second, the circular island connects all of the separate cabinets by function. The lively mix of materials, wood, stone, tile and copper, blend and reflect light in different intensities, serving each of the kitchen’s purposes. Although many interiors mix various media, an intimate knowledge of their working properties and compatibility is critical to a natural, harmonious combination. This is the world of custom cabinet design and master craftsmanship. Project 6425.1 Photographer Phillip Beaurline
