Serpentine dry stacked granite walls celebrate regional materials while transforming this sloping yard into a multilevel extension of home. It features a secluded fire pit that looks out over a striking view of the stormwater pond below and mountains in the distance, activated by the occasional glimpse of local wildlife populations including bald eagles and deer. Rodwin Architecture & Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, CO USA Our clients asked us to breathe new life into a dark and chopped up 1990’s home, that had a solid shell but a dysfunctional floor plan and dated finishes. We took down all the walls and created an open concept, sunny plan where all the public social spaces connected. We added a Dutch front door and created both a foyer and proper mud-room for the first time, so guests now had a sense of arrival and a place to hang their jackets. The odd dated kitchen that was the heart of the home was rebuilt from scratch with a simple white and blue palette. We opened up the south wall of the main floor with large windows and doors to help BBQ’s and parties flow from inside to the patio. The sagging and faded wrap-around porch was rebuilt from scratch. We re-arranged the interior spaces to create a dream kid’s playroom packed with organized storage and just far enough away from the grown-ups so that everyone can co-exist peacefully. We redid the finishes & fixtures throughout, and opened up the staircase to be an elegant path through this 4 storey house. Built by Skycastle Construction.

Design ideas for a mid-sized contemporary partial sun side yard gravel landscaping in Chicago.

Our client built a striking new home on the east slope of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. To complement the clean lines of the facade we designed a simple, elegant landscape that sets off the home rather than competing with the bold architecture. Soft grasses offer contrast to the natural stone veneer, perennials brighten the mood, and planters add a bit of whimsy to the arrival sequence. On either side of the main entry, roof runoff is dramatically routed down the face of the home in steel troughs to biofilter planters faced in stone. Around the back of the home, a small “leftover” space was transformed into a cozy patio terrace with bluestone slabs and crushed granite underfoot. A view down into, or across the back patio area provides a serene foreground to the beautiful views to Lake Washington beyond. This Outdoor Living Space Display features various outdoor living services we provide. We featured water features, hardscapes, masonry, landscapes, outdoor audio, and landscape lighting. The main idea was to create a space where we could showcase our specialties for the public’s viewing pleasure. We encourage visitors to stop by and interact with this grand display. Night time viewing is also encouraged as the entire feature is lit up in the evening. In the future we plan to incorporate additional features to this project. At some point we hope to add an outdoor kitchen area as well as a fire-place. Upon entering the property, first thing to catch your eye is a fairly large-scale water feature. The water feature consist of an ecosystem pond. The water starts to flow from a spillway bowl fountain. The spillway pours into the bog filter. The water then flows down various cascading waterfalls. The waterfalls and pond were constructed out of 2 different types of boulders. We did this to show various options available. There is a gigantic boulder fountain that is incorporated into the pond as well. There is a skimmer in the pond the show functionality. The pond then flows over a zero edge waterfall into a large basin. Atop the basin is 3 fountains. 2 bubbling urn fountains as well as fire bowl fountain. The patio area incorporates different styles and colors of pavers. Along with different styles of boarders. There is 2 seating walls on either side of the patio area. Each seating wall has a mixture of stone and brick veneer and topped with flagstone caps. There is a very unique shed next to the patio area. Surrounding the patio are we installed an outdoor audio system as well. This system cranks out some serious sound. Stop by and have a listen! The entire project area is outfitted with landscape lighting. We incorporated up-lights, wall lights, path lights, and a couple of spot lights. The entire water feature also has underwater lighting installed. Landscaping was installed around the project to finished it off.
