Preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday is turning out to be a bit different. Gone this year is the uncle who throws crumbs of food and bits of trash in the fireplace. Or the kids that like to poke the fireplace logs sending sparks in every direction.
This year, we get to create our own scene. Once you and your family have finished the delicious meal, now it’s time to make the rounds of Internet calls. Whether you use Zoom, Facebook, Skype or any other system, one thing is for sure…you need a warm, inviting, good-looking background.
The fireplace is the perfect go-to background, especially when you can see and hear the crackling of the fire. Put a little extra time in decorating around the fireplace, and of course, include the cookies and pumpkin pie. To ensure chaos isn’t erupting behind you, make sure your fireplace and chimney is ready to go.
Begin with a Chimney & Fireplace Inspection
By getting a chimney inspection you’ll help to ensure smoke goes up and out of the house, debris is not blocking it and any animals are safely living outside of your chimney. You certainly don’t want your online guests to think you smoked the turkey in the fireplace.
Chimney backup or a Smokey fireplace is usually caused by an insufficient draft in the flue. However, there are lots of other reasons for smoke backup including the partially open dampers, too small of a flue or a dirty chimney. This is one situation that’s best left to a certified technician to identify and repair.
Debris knows how to make its way into the chimney. Leaves, twigs, paper, plastic, and anything else flying around on windy days, has this special radar, and when it finds a chimney, it’ll try to make its way in. If the chimney doesn’t have a chimney cap, or if it was blown off or shifted from the high winds, debris found a new home!
Animals are wonderful to watch outside. We’ve watched a couple of the squirrels in our yard go from a lean body to a very plump size, all in preparation for winter. What comes next is a cozy place to sleep. The chimney is a perfect. It’s warm and protects the animals from the outdoor elements. If there isn’t a chimney cap or if the cap is loose or moved in a way to squeeze in…perfect!
What is a 14 Point Inspection?
A 14 point chimney inspection for your fireplace tells us a story about the events that occurred over the past year’s freeze and thaw cycle. It reveals to us any wear and tear, the frequency of use and the age of the chimney. This is great information to have in order to stay on top of any necessary chimney repairs and know the current conditions of worthiness for use.
Since the chimney is high on the roof, we take pictures of your chimney to show you the current condition. If any repairs are needed, you can see it for yourself.
You have a little time before the ‘live’ internet chat on Thanksgiving Day. As part of your preparations, get your chimney swept and inspected today. Call 877-244-6349.

After years of working in their dark, cramped Kitchen, these Bala Cynwyd homeowners decided it was time to make a very big change. Rather than leave a house they loved, these retirees decided to maximize the space available and selectively add square footage with an eye toward aging-in-place. The result was a series of bright, open spaces with high ceilings and plentiful natural light. The former garage was converted to a flexible room that is currently being used as a cozy Sitting Area. When needed, this space will transition into a Ground Floor Bedroom with full access to the newly landscaped rear yard. An adjacent Bathroom completes the future Bedroom Suite and was designed with a zero-entry shower in addition to other ‘hidden’ accessibility features. The new Kitchen reflects the owners’ simple modern aesthetic with windows and skylights strategically placed to capture some of their favorite exterior views. The washer and dryer were relocated from the basement and seamlessly incorporated into a new Mudroom located immediately off of the Kitchen, fulfilling the possibility of single-story living in a two-story home.

An obvious choice for organization, this double-decker arrangement permits storage of most sizes of kitchen utensils. Photo: Dan Bawden.

In 2010, with the homeowner’s children grown, they were faced with what has become a concern for many families, how to provide for aging parents. They considered many options, and made the decision to move her mother and father, both in their nineties, into their current family home. An addition was built that would best accommodate the parents’ needs, and include all the custom design details and quality construction of the main home.

Melissa and Steve purchased our National Award Winning Green Certified Remodeled Home. They had moved to Colorado previously to expand Business opportunities, but found that they missed being near their extended family members and Melissa’s native city and state. They wanted a home in a quiet neighborhood that suited their needs and had been updated to current design trends and amenities. With 2 young children a single-story home appealed to them.
Steve primarily worked from home, using the formal Living Room as his home office which was central to the Kitchen and main living areas. As their children grew, it became increasingly difficult to With 4 children, their daily activities were split between the 1st and second floors, making it difficult to coordinate activities amongst them. Also, with a large extended family close-by, get-togethers were cramped and uncomfortable.
With the added 1st floor living space, they are now able to all comfortably gather together and spend more quality time with their family and friends.

Our clients for this project are a professional couple with a young family. They approached us to help with extending and improving their home in London SW2 to create an enhanced space both aesthetically and functionally for their growing family. We were appointed to provide a full architectural and interior design service, including the design of some bespoke furniture too.
A core element of the brief was to design a kitchen living and dining space that opened into the garden and created clear links from inside to out. This new space would provide a large family area they could enjoy all year around. We were also asked to retain the good bits of the current period living spaces while creating a more modern day area in an extension to the rear.
It was also a key requirement to refurbish the upstairs bathrooms while the extension and refurbishment works were underway.
The solution was a 21m2 extension to the rear of the property that mirrored the neighbouring property in shape and size. However, we added some additional features, such as the projecting glass box window seat. The new kitchen features a large island unit to create a workspace with storage, but also room for seating that is perfect for entertaining friends, or homework when the family gets to that age.
The sliding folding doors, paired with floor tiling that ran from inside to out, created a clear link from the garden to the indoor living space. Exposed brick blended with clean white walls creates a very contemporary finish throughout the extension, while the period features have been retained in the original parts of the house.
