So they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes to create a second-story expansion. With limited ability to expand the footprint of the home due to lot restrictions, the design team created a 25’ x 35’ master suite addition to be placed over the existing first floor. The space would be located above the living room, dining room and kitchen, creating a private and secluded oasis for mom and dad. The children would have the home’s three middle level bedrooms and a bath of their own. A New Master Suite A new custom wooden staircase leads the homeowner to the doorstep of what she now calls her “heavenly space.” It’s a large master bedroom complete with a seating area, vaulted ceiling and skylights, and a beautiful Bordeaux-finish maple wood floor. Bright color paint was selected for the walls to complement the wood flooring and bedroom furniture. The new 11’x12’ master bathroom offers a spa-like experience. The new bath touts a large shower stall with a built-in bench and storage niches covered with flagstone tiles; a soaking whirlpool tub; and a long double vanity with granite top and fancy fixtures. Exterior Ties It Together Like any large addition, this one required exterior renovation to make the addition look like the rest of the home. New vinyl siding and architectural shingles replaced the old cedar siding and run down shingles on the original structure. A new front porch with half-stone columns and pillars maintains the home’s cottage look. A new double car garage replaces the original carport. Both are a big part of the home’s new front elevation which greatly improves its curbside appeal. The end result of this project offers everyone in the family a place of their own. The children have new bedrooms and the parents have their sanctuary in their new master suite.

Being the second home we have designed for this family, The challenge was creating spaces that were functional for this active family!. With the help of Jim Bulejski Architects, we completely gutted/renovated the first floor. Adding onto the original back of the house creating the new kitchen space any chef would want to create in. Renovated the original/existing "kitchen" to be an eat-in and side extension to the kitchen and coffee bar area. We added a working laundry room for the kids to dump backpacks and sports gear and a refuge for her 5 dogs, a fresh den/seating area for the mom and dad, and last but not least, updated the old Living Room to create a cozy space for the kids and adults to retreat to! Once upon a time Dad was actually a legit racecar driver. Cool right? There is actually a picture of him racing in this room which I’ll get to soon. This room is big a bright and belongs to their oldest son. They already had most of the accessories and all the furniture we just simply painted, added a mural, added drapes and a rug, and re-arranged the art. Not a ton of work but it made a big difference. The updated mudroom created a space that seamlessly connects to the kitchen, laundry room, walk-in closet, and powder bath while also serving as a comfortable haven for the family’s furry friends when they are away. To maximize functionality, we included open spaces under the bench for dog bowls and storage baskets for shoes, hats, and mittens. A myriad of hooks lines the walls, ensuring that there is a dedicated place for every coat and school bag. One of the most heartwarming features of this project is the wood bench top, lovingly handcrafted by the homeowner’s dad. It adds a personal and rustic touch to the space, making it truly unique. For added durability, we incorporated shiplap on the walls. Not only does it add a chic and contemporary aesthetic, but it’s also designed to withstand the wear and tear of a high-traffic area. Tying the mudroom and connected laundry room together is a beautiful wood-look tile floor, combining the timeless appeal of wood with the durability of tile. The vertical grain laminate textured melamine cabinets also tie the spaces together which were designed to withstand the rigors of everyday use. The laundry room quadrupled in size, and this expansion allowed us to introduce a range of practical and stylish features, perfect for this large family. Stacking the full-size washer and dryer was a game-changer, as it opened up valuable space for additional counter space, a sink, and ample storage. The project didn’t stop at the laundry room. A wall of 15″ deep pantries was added, along with an extra refrigerator. This provides ample storage space for small appliances and extra food, which is especially useful for a family with growing boys. A frosted glass door connects the laundry room to the wet bar area of the kitchen/dining room, facilitating easy access when entertaining. Furthermore, there is an exterior door leading to the backyard, ensuring that the space is not only practical but also connected to the outdoor living area. Amber works from home and was sacrificing a dining room for her home office. By utilizing the double wide closet space in her guest bedroom, she now walks into her home without the reminder of work, and can have guests over for a meal in her dining room (dining room reveal coming soon). The walls were freshly painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. This gives the room a fresh, clean look and also adds contrast to the beige carpet. Amber had her homework assignments cut out for her as she had to do some major purging in her throw all guest room. Once she started letting go, she was on a roll and continually surprised me as she cleaned out closets throughout the house. One dresser was filled with cds, dvds, books, albums, scrap-booking materials; items taking up precious real estate in her life that she didn't even know were there. There really wasn't a storage problem after-all, she was just holding on to a collection of things that no longer served her. Each time I would visit, and her space would become more open, I could see the weight lifting off her and her self love building. Amber had a recent breakup with her boyfriend and this makeover helped her not only focus on making a home sanctuary for herself, but helped her let go of the pains of the past and focus on the exciting future ahead. At one point when we were moving sofas in the living room (which we will also reveal soon), we found an ex's flip-flop. We were figuratively and literally sweeping away the past. Editing your home and your life makes room for your future; for new people and things. We are so happy to finally reveal the room to you! We can't wait to unveil the rest of Amber's home, once we complete the finishing touches. Challenges: Amber's home was filled with mix-matched furniture from family and college. She had no idea what her decorating style was. After shopping together and exchanging somepinterest boards, I was finally able to get a sense of what she loves. I had to work on a tight budget, which meant really digging out the creativity and utilizing other items in the home. We wanted to save the closet doors in the event she sold her home or no longer needed an office someday. There wasn't any extra space to store these closet doors, so I used them as a headboard.
