Design ideas for a mid-sized contemporary backyard stone garden path in Orange County.

Philharmonic Design House - 2014, The Strands in Dana Point, CA Master Bedroom, Venetian Plastered Ceiling in "Papyrus" texture Dana Point, CA Interior Designer, Beth Whitlinger, www.bwid.com When the Interior Designer described the wall covering as being a silver leafed pattern along with oodles of sumptuous natural fiber fabrics on the bedding, chairs, and window treatments, this plaster finish came to mind as being the perfect invention of richness and texture to be in relationship with the rhythm of natural linens and silks in this significant House of Design space. The color was chosen to coordinate with the natural stone of the fireplace, the glint and gleam of the burnished cross-hatched Venetian Plaster was meant to support the bling Beth brought into this room through the chandelier and the headboard wall and other more subtle details. This ceiling finish, so I was told by one of the docents, was one of the top three talked about topics of this magnificent space. I was glad to hear, as this was a finish designed and mixed up in my artist's workshop with the confidence it would do the trick. The overall design was impeccable as delivered by the very talented Beth Whitlinger. I sincerely hope to perform this finish again and again. It is quite remarkably unique as well as a beautiful backdrop to rich decor. We used: Custom cherry cabinetry in Arts & Crafts Shaker style by Kabinart in Boulder and Espresso stains. Liberty Hardware Venetian bronze 1-1/2" cabinet knobs. A converted bedroom, the transformation began with colors on the walls and a deeply layered faux treatment on the ceiling inset. The Interior Designer in this space asked for the following experience: "I want soft, soothing, tranquil. I want the ceiling to look like the ocean. From the perspective of floating under water, and looking up through the water and into the sky beyond" The process entailed approximately 14 steps, with a finish of 2 layers of hand troweled wax buffed to an ocean-like sheen. Soft, soothing, calming, peaceful, joyful healing energies were added through our every brushstroke. This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. Adjacent, a 1200 sf building is reconfigured for a guest or visiting artist residence and studio with a shared outdoor patio for entertaining. Photo by Peter Molick, Art by Karin Broker

A home office off the kitchen can be concealed with a pocket door. Gray-painted maple Wood-Mode cabinetry complements the kitchen finishes but makes the space unique. **Project Overview** A small, quiet, efficient office space for one that is perfect for sorting mail and paying bills. Though small it has a great deal of natural light and views out the front of the house of the lush landscaping and wildlife. A pocket door makes the office disappear when it's time to entertain. **What Makes This Project Unique?** Small yet incredibly functional, this desk space is a comfortable, quiet place to catch up on home management tasks. Filled with natural light and offering a view of lush landscaping, the compact space is light and airy. To keep it from feeling cramped or crowded, we complemented warm gray-painted maple cabinetry with light countertops and tile. Taller ceilings allow ample storage, including full-height open storage, to manage all of the papers, files and extras that find their way into the home. **Design Challenges** While the office was intentionally designed into a tiny nook off the kitchen and pantry, we didn't want it to feel small for the people using it. By keeping the color palette light, taking cabinetry to the ceiling, incorporating open storage and maximizing natural light, the space feels cozy, and larger than it actually is.
