A Lake Michigan Home gets a Modern Refresh from Dresner Design. Photos by Tony Soluri. This couple moved from Chicago’s Wicker Park to a rural setting but wanted to maintain their modern aesthetic. Scott Dresner of Dresner Design created a light bright clean-lined kitchen perfect for the couple’s need to entertain. Must have’s included a drawer for over sixty spices, storage for three sets of dishes, a coffee bar, and a huge island the couple uses for entertaining. The palette is mostly white to maximize outdoor views. Constraints were plenty both timeline and budgetary. Dresner came up with some creative solutions, which allowed the homeowners to save on cabinetry and materials and splurge on appliances.

Grounded Aesthetic Modern clean lines juxtaposed with natural texture and materials, create a warm and inviting kitchen that feels casual and luxurious at the same time. Leicht Minera Kiruna cabinets with natural wood and woven elements define the kitchen in this vast open space. Floating wood shelves highlight the functional items that add character and personality to the space. The distinctive large island includes the prestigious Gaggenau gas & induction combination cooktops for the homeowners’ culinary and entertainment lifestyle. Bold Neutrals The deliberate kitchen palette of natural neutral colors is a nod to the Modern Rustic high style. Textured deep grays and black hues combined with an organic natural wood palette, evokes sophistication and warmth. Neolith Nero Zimbabwe Riverwashed countertop and low backsplash with its deep rich color and rough texture adds to the curated mix. Minera Kiruna panels complete the backsplash composition with its natural metal vibe.

Red and gray modern kitchen with flat panel doors (also known as slab doors) built and installed by Bill Fry Construction. Walnut floors finished with Rubio Monocoat. The island is gray and the perimeter cabinets are red. The counter tops are a dark shade of gray. The appliances are stainless steel. Note that photos were taken prior to install of backsplash and glass doors on upper cabinet to the right of the hood.

Granite is lustrous, rich, and crystalline, can be honed to a gloss, is smooth to the touch, very hard and 100% natural. Quartz is lustrous, deep and dimensional and can be honed to desired gloss. It’s smooth to the touch and hard, but can scorch. Quartz is 93% natural and 7% manmade. Marble is deep, rich and illuminating, and polishes to a very high gloss. While beautiful and very hard, marble does have a higher tendency to scratch and scorch. Marble is 100% natural. Solid Surface is uniform and has a matte-like structure. It’s never glossy and can scratch, but it’s sandable. Solid Surface provides texture, and seams are mostly invisible. Solid Surface is 66% natural and 33% polymers.
