During - 2016 - Was all weeds/turf approx 3 years ago. Solarized and smothered entire lawn in stages in 2013. Redirected water by digging a "dry creek" bed 1-2 feet and filling with gravel in 2013. Covered with cobblestone in 2016. Landscaped over past 3 years with azaleas, rhododendron, ferns, lamium, delphinium, carpet roses (drought tolerant), iceberg roses and a 50 year old Chrysler Imperial rose transplanted from the back yard. Also, ground cover herbs such as lemon thyme, creeping thyme, compact oregano and corsican mint (as well as alyssum). Walkway replaced with pavers in 2016. Flagstone walkway to driveway being placed. Will also be re-mulched. Facing South from middle of front yard.

The home was perched on a massive expanse of lawn that we "right sized" by composing garden beds in correct proportion to the home. The Client wanted beauty, opulence, lushness, and sensual delight. Climbing roses waves their blossoms in air, backlight by river water light. Ornamental grasses spray like whitewater from between romantic garden favorites: peonies, daisies, delphinium, catmints. Each species was selected for its solid performance, be it everblooming blossoms, fragrance, or architectural stature. Repetition, proportion, form and rhythm bring order and ease to the eye, whether something is in flower or not.

Garden 40 in Silver Lake

From the front entry, looking toward the parking area. The small front lawn is experienced as a room of it's own, with house and plantings to confine it. The curved natural-stone walkway passes through a narrow gap between the home and a low stone retaining wall below the rope swing. "Miss Kim" Korean lilac is planted near the entry, for early June fragrance. Also visible in the mixed bed are Delphiniums, Campanula, wild ferns, a small Star Magnolia tree, and the large Rhododendron at the corner of the house. Blue Spruce and Sugar Maple trees help enclose the lawn area. Siding is white cedar with Cabot stain. Front steps are cut granite.
