During - 2016 - Flagstone walkway to driveway being placed. Was all weeds/turf approx 3 years ago. Solarized and smothered entire lawn in stages in 2013. Redirected water by digging a "dry creek" bed 1-2 feet and filling with gravel in 2013. Covered with cobblestone in 2016. Landscaped over past 3 years with azaleas, rhododendron, ferns, lamium, delphinium, carpet roses (drought tolerant), iceberg roses and a 50 year old Chrysler Imperial rose transplanted from the back yard. Also, ground cover herbs such as lemon thyme, creeping thyme, compact oregano and corsican mint (as well as alyssum). Walkway replaced with pavers in 2016. Will also be re-mulched.

This basket looks like a giant flower ball because it is planted in the sides as well as the top (kinsmangarden.com). Blue delphiniums form the centerpiece, surrounded by snapdragons. Plectranthus and begonias are planted through the side hoels. By bringing hues in the architecture - here, layers of gray - the house moves into the landscape and becomes a part of it. In the winter, the boulders will be the primary feature. Cultivar evergreens and repeating ivory tree trunks will drive the scene. In the summer, the boulders will peer from above native grasses and an ongoing procession of Rocky Mountain favorites: bee balm, columbine, delphinium, veronicastrum, aster. There will be no formality, simply a textural tableau in contrast to the concrete.

I took a landscape class and learned about Seven Sons Flowers Trees. They are leggy as juveniles, but they grow quickly and have a super interesting bloom cycle (Sept and Oct are fabulous!) I lucked out to find three of them at a local nursery. I took bright pink sedum (dragonblood?) from the front garden and put it at the base of these. The photo doesn't do them justice.
