My clients were'early pioneers in a low-density 1940's working class neighborhood that quickly transitioned to its current status as an up-scale higher-density enclave of [cool] townhouses close to downtown. The resulting, much-published, AIA state and local award-winning design assumes an industrial flavor in direct response to the materials and ambience the clients wanted: a light-filled, open-plan living space with exposed wood structure, pine 2x sub-flooring, exposed ductwork and conduit, metal and stucco exterior siding, finished concrete floors on floor 1 and metal sash windows all around. Coastal, chic, glam.....all words to describe this lovely whole home remodel. My client loves blue and so we layered shades of blue throughout the house. Highlights of the kitchen include a custom glass backsplash, art glass pendants, appliances integrated into the cabinetry, and the gorgeous Cambria countertop featuring blue veining. Custom cabinets in cream and blue create color balance and contrast. Functionally, there is a ton of covered storage along with glass display cabinets and open shelves by the sink. The bathrooms both follow suit with serene blues and whites in the tile, vanities, and paint. The art glass sconces are a special feature in each bathroom.

This project earned its name 'The Herringbone House' because of the reclaimed wood accents styled in the Herringbone pattern. This project was focused heavily on pattern and texture. The wife described her style as "beachy buddha" and the husband loved industrial pieces. We married the two styles together and used wood accents and texture to tie them seamlessly. You'll notice the living room features an amazing view of the water and this design concept plays perfectly into that zen vibe. We removed the tile and replaced it with beautiful hardwood floors to balance the rooms and avoid distraction. The owners of this home love Cuban art and funky pieces, so we constructed these built-ins to showcase their amazing collection.

This beautiful secluded house and art studio, hand built by a Japanese Potter, has been given a new life as a writing studio for its owner. The building, having been neglected and uninhabited for some time, was in danger of being demolished. The owner’s recognition of the underlying spirit of the place, in what can only be described as a labor of love, worked with the designers and the artisans to bring this building back to life. The stone cylinder at the center of the building houses bathrooms and mechanical systems, allowing the remainder of the building to remain open. The new cedar posts, stair, custom cabinets and handcrafted sliding doors are among the details that were chosen to complement the restoration of the underlying building, ensuring a long life for this peaceful retreat.

In the kitchen space, we worked with low ceilings, and thanks to verticals, light tones, and carefully considered furniture management, we managed to create a feeling of space. The presence of contrasting accents makes the light interior more expressive, and the furniture from Poliform could be described as multifunctional. From the dining zone, an entrance leads to a terrace, from where one can admire the sea and swim in the swimming pool.

Having lived in their new home for several years, these homeowners were ready to finish their basement and transform it into a multi-purpose space where they could mix and mingle with family and friends. Inspired by clean lines and neutral tones, the style can be described as well-dressed rustic. Despite being a lower level, the space is flooded with natural light, adding to its appeal. Situated along Eagle River, looking across to the mouth of the Ipswich Harbor, this was clearly a little cape house that was married to the sea. The owners were inquiring about adding a simple shed dormer to provide additional exposure to the stunning water view, but they were also interested in what Mathew would design if this beach cottage were his. Inspired by the waves that came ashore mere feet from the little house, Mathew took up a fat marker and sketched a sweeping, S-shape dormer on the waterside of the building. He then described how the dormer would be designed in the shape of an ocean wave. “This way,” he explained, “you will not only be able to see the ocean from your new master bedroom, you’ll also be able to experience that view from a space that actually reflects the spirit of the waves.” Mathew and his team designed the master suite and study using a subtle combination of contemporary and traditional, beach-house elements. The result was a completely unique and one-of-a-kind space inside and out. Transparencies are built into the design via features like gently curved glass that reflects the water and the arched interior window separating the bedroom and bath. On the exterior, the curved dormer on the street side echoes these rounded shapes and lines to create continuity throughout. The sense of movement is accentuated by the continuous, V-groove boarded ceiling that runs from one ocean-shaped dormer through to the opposite side of the house. The bedroom features a cozy sitting area with built in storage and a porthole window to look out onto the rowboats in the harbor. A bathroom and closet were combined into a single room in a modern design that doesn't sacrifice any style or space and provides highly efficient functionality. A striking barn door made of glass with industrial hardware divides the two zones of the master suite. The custom, built-in maple cabinetry of the closets provides a textural counterpoint to the unique glass shower that incorporates sea stones and an ocean wave motif accent tile. With this spectacular design vision, the owners are now able to enjoy their stunning view from a bright and spacious interior that brings the natural elements of the beach into the home. The dream is couple had was to remove the wall between the living room and the kitchen. This extensive remodel to this couple's upscale home in Carlsbad. We are always in favor in going beyond the basic shaker style cabinetry. We used Bellmont cabinetry lineage cabinetry door style, an upscale shaker is how we describe it to our client. We used quartz countertops with a waterfall end. Beach inspired kitchen design with stainless steel kitchen appliances and large expansive counter tops. Multi windows throughout this home give this kitchen a very open feeling. The kitchen has 2 sinks, one farm sink on the island. The island houses a wine cooler, microwave drawer and of course the basic sink essentials.
