Innovative Design BuildFive stars isn’t enough! Our project was to reconfigure and update the main floor of a house we recently purchased that was built in 1961. We wanted to maintain some of the unique feeling it originally had but bring it up-to-date and eliminate the closed-in rooms and downright weird layout that was the result of multiple, partial remodeling projects. We began with a long wishlist of changes which also required replacement of very antiquated plumbing, electrical wiring and HVAC. We even found a fireplace that had been walled in and needed major re-construction. Many other aspects and details on this incredible list we made included an all new kitchen layout, converting a bedroom into a master closet, adding new half-bath, completely rebuilding the master bath, and adding stone, tile and custom built cabinetry. Our design plans included many fixtures and details that we specified and required professional installation and careful handling. Innovative helped us make reasonable decisions. Their skilled staff took us through a design process that made sense. There were many questions and all were answered with sincere conversation and positive – innovation – on how we could achieve our goals. Innovative provided us with professional consultants, who listened and were courteous and creative, with solid knowledge and informative judgement. When they didn’t have an answer, they did the research. They developed a comprehensive project plan that exceeded our expectations. Every item on our long list was checked-off. All agreed on work was fulfilled and they completed all this in just under four months. Innovative took care of putting together a team of skilled professional specialists who were all dedicated to make everything right. Engineering, construction, supervision, and I cannot even begin to describe how much thanks we have for the demolition crew! Our multiple, detailed project designs from Raul and professional design advice from Mindy and the connections she recommended are all of the best quality. Diego Jr., Trevor and his team kept everything on track and neat and tidy every single day and Diego Sr., Mark, Ismael, Albert, Santiago and team are true craftsmen who follow-up and make the most minuscule woodworking details perfect. The cabinets by Tim and electrical work and installation of fixtures by Kemchan Harrilal-BB and Navindra Doolratram, and Augustine and his crew on tile and stone work – all perfection. Aisling and the office crew were always responsive to our calls and requests. And of course Clark and Eric who oversaw everything and gave us the best of the best! Apologies if we didn’t get everyone on this list – you’re all great! Thank you for your hard work and dedication. We can’t thank you enough Innovative Construction – we kind of want to do it again!

Bilotta Kitchen & HomeFrom the outside of this very traditional home in Harrison, New York, you would never expect the contemporary styling and pops of color throughout the interior, including the white feather chandelier and oversized painting of Marilyn Monroe with pink bubblegum, both of which accent the dinner table. When the client first came into meet with Bilotta designer, Danielle Florie, they had an idea of what they wanted, and what they didn’t want. They have modern/transitional taste and wanted both an aesthetically “wow” kitchen that was also very functional. Danielle made it come to life. They had been collecting photos for ten years before they decided to pull the trigger. They opted for Bilotta’s private cabinetry line, the Bilotta Collection, and selected a frameless, stepped door with double tiered wall cabinets, all accented by polished chrome rectangular pulls and square knobs. Instead of a deep corner cabinet they went with thick alumasteel shelves in the corner of the kitchen. At the peninsula they added some “bling” with the polished chrome and glass doors above the appliance garage. Also at the peninsula they decided to face their secondary, “prep” sink out towards the dinner table primarily so the kids could wash their hands before eating. There is also an undercounter beverage center to the right of that sink for easy access to drinks. Instead of going with a smooth painted finish they opted for a hand-brushed finish for a little texture. All appliances are Miele including their brand new 48” duel fuel range, smart enough on its own to tell you how to cook! The backsplash behind the range is the Stone Fox Collection from Ellen Blakeley of Ellen Blakely Studio in Santa Rosa, CA. It is a custom made tempered glass mosaic. The countertops and rest of the backsplash are White Diamond marble from Rye Marble, and the flooring is a porcelain Tile from Terra Tile. Designer: Danielle Florie. Photo Credit: Peter Krupenye

Red House Design BuildEvery culture has multiple ways of saying hello. Greetings are an essential, and important, human interaction. Smiles, handshakes, high fives, and hugs all convey welcome; but, as I tell our three boys, your choice of greeting, sends a greater message than just, “hi”. A firm handshake and eye contact says a lot about you and how you regard the other person.
Homes greet us, too. A home’s entrance sends a message, whether formal like a handshake or warm like a hug, it greets guests and owners with the same message. A mudroom entrance might invite a guest into the heart of the home like an old friend, or a formal entry may give a guest pause to look around and gauge the home’s owner by the impression left on the guest.
One of our Red House “clients for life” is a couple that bought a builder grade development home in RI. After taking care of some high priority functional & aesthetic remodeling (a new master bathroom and walk-in closet), the owners contacted Red House again to finally upgrade the front door & entry to the home.
The original, a low-end entry door from a big box store, had finally reached the end of its’ usable life. It was leaking air and starting to rust. It didn’t live up to the aesthetic improvements the owners had made in other areas of the home, and, it no longer served its purpose to shelter and protect or to welcome and greet.
After gauging the space, we realized that with a few minor adjustments to the entry area, we could add some paneling above the door and center a window feature in the foyer. These details created a elegant, yet warm, formality. A three-quarter glass door with a unique window patter provides warm light and an openness that creates the friendly invitation of a true home.
The newly remodeled space speaks to the quality standards of the owners of the home, and, in turn, it will continue to inform the identity of the family while they live there. But more than that, the new entry foreshadows the quality and aesthetics of the other rooms in the house, just like a firm handshake and eye contact is a preview of what to expect.
- Justin Zeller owns a design-build remodeling firm, Red House Custom Building, serving RI and MA. Besides being a Certified Remodeler, Justin has led the team at Red House to win multiple peer-reviewed awards for design and service achievements. Justin also sits on the Board of Directors and serves as Vice President of EM NARI.
