Photo of a mid-sized modern drought-tolerant and full sun backyard concrete paver landscaping in Los Angeles with a fire pit for spring.

The compact front landscape of this Sausaltio home underwent a major transformation. Much of the failing concrete retaining walls were removed to gain more patio space. Ledger stone veneer was installed on existing walls. A new built-in BBQ/grill with full range bluestone for counter tops, patio floor and stairs. I also designed a contemporary, stepped, horizontal redwood fence along both sides of the sloped driveway. Low water plantings including low light succulents were included in this contemporary facelift. Photos: © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

The "Gracie Modern Arbors" (by TerraTrellis) offer eye-catching focal points. Three installed to bring interest and needed height over a long pathway ramp with grape vines. Another frames a stairway to the hillside with a flowering Passion vine. The sloped hillsides were revamped to include low-water and low-maintenance plants that include CA natives, flowing grasses, other Mediterranean plants and several succulents.

Achillea Terra cotta - Yarrow, along with hens and chicks succulents, echeveria elegance. This expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders. Dramatic white pots provide architectural accents, filled with succulents and citrus trees. Design, Photos, Drawings © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

The dramatic transformation for this landscape replaced the lawn with a whimsical sculpture as a focal point, surrounded by Mexican pebbles and black limestone pavers and small sitting area. Succulents and other low water plants provide colors and textures and a lower water bill for the homeowners in this San Rafael home. Photo take just after installation, see other more recent photos. Evening photos of the Living wall/vertical garden 2 months after installation. Along with finished plantings in the landscape for this mid-century modern home. Concrete pavers, polished black pebbles provide a welcoming front pathway along and low-voltage landscape lighting. A variety of grasses, lavender, yarrow, succulents and CA native plants included in the landscape remodel. The large living wall was the perfect solution to bring life to the home's large front wall just next to the entrance. A variety of succulents, grass-like plants, cascading Oxalis and Lamium, were planted in long waves in the wall offering a beautiful tapestry of flowing textures and colors.
