Unlike other design studios, Interplay has its own view of growing their interior design business. Since Taiwan is facing the low fertility issue, the team has noticed that instead of doing fancy design, creating and focusing on the senior-friendly home would be an advanced and primary market in the future.
"A senior-friendly home" does not mean, putting the aids full of the home, but considering more about the dignity. They realized this point!
But how? This project main designer - Kuan says: Creating the thoughtful space without reminding them - "This function is for you."
Because even they need the supports, they hope there are no differences with others. Therefore, the senior-friendly homes they create will just look like other homes. On the other hands, they also can be sustainable, design the homes without any concern in the future life,

Refined Continuity: Bridging Classical Architecture and Modern Living
This comprehensive remodel of a grand Cow Hollow residence reimagines a historically expressive envelope through a lens of contemporary livability, precision detailing, and material restraint. The design approach carefully balances the home’s classical proportions and ornamental heritage with a refined, modern sensibility—evident in the disciplined palette of warm neutrals, soft plasters, pale oak flooring, and tailored millwork. Circulation has been clarified and subtly expanded to enhance spatial flow, while openings are leveraged to capture light, garden outlooks, and distant water views. Throughout, architectural interventions are executed with a high level of craft, ensuring that new insertions—whether cabinetry, railings, or apertures—read as seamless continuations of the original structure rather than applied elements.
The kitchen serves as the operational and visual anchor of the home, conceived as a sculptural yet highly functional environment. Custom rift-cut cabinetry, softened through a desaturated finish, is paired with honed stone surfaces and integrated brass hardware to create a quiet, tactile richness. A monolithic island establishes a central gathering point, while perimeter work zones are carefully layered with concealed storage, integrated appliances, and open, backlit shelving that elevates everyday objects into curated displays. The adjacent bar and entertaining areas extend this language, reinforcing a cohesive hospitality-driven program. In parallel, the primary bathroom is designed as a serene, spa-like retreat, where bookmatched stone, frameless glass enclosures, and finely detailed metalwork converge. The composition prioritizes symmetry, clarity, and light—balancing generous volumes with intimate moments through integrated lighting, custom vanities, and a restrained material hierarchy.
The library and ancillary living spaces introduce a more intimate scale, anchored by bespoke built-ins that combine closed storage with illuminated display niches, creating depth and rhythm along the walls. Here, material transitions and furniture integration are handled with particular nuance, allowing the architecture to support both quiet retreat and social gathering. A continuous language of custom railings—executed in refined metal profiles—threads through the interior and extends outward, where the exterior gate and garden elements have been reinterpreted to align with the home’s renewed identity. The entry sequence is now defined by a calibrated interplay of solidity and transparency, with sculptural metalwork and landscape integration establishing a sense of arrival that is both secure and elegant. Collectively, the project reflects a holistic transformation—one that elevates performance, livability, and aesthetic clarity while preserving the inherent dignity of the original architecture.

Our assignment was to take a large traditional home in the French Eclectic style and update and renovate the interiors to reflect a more modern style. Many assume that modern furnishings only work in modern settings. This project proves that assumption to be wrong.

The living room opens to the forest through black French doors that turn the woods into a living backdrop. Soft textures - a suede sling chair, woven rug, and clay lamp - create a sense of grounded comfort. The room is designed for slow mornings, open doors, and the ease of watching grandchildren play just beyond the trees. Warm, minimal, and deeply connected to nature, this space reflects the project’s core intention: beauty that supports aging with dignity and belonging.

As the entryway to the home, we wanted this foyer to be a truly refined welcome to each of its guests. As guests enter they will be greeted with this polished and inviting entry, which contrasts dark colors against stunning tall white millwork along the walls. As a designer there is always the challenge of working with aspects of a room that your clients are not going to be changing. For us this was the flooring, to which we fitted with a custom cut L shaped rug that would allow us to tie together the foyer to the stairs and better coincide with the rest of our designs. We added a touch of bright color in the side table with gold and light yellow elements, while still tying things together with the blue and white detailed vase that mirrors the rug design. As the eye travels up the stairs the iron wrought spindles wonderfully accent the stairway’s dark wood railings. Further upward and this captivating grand chandelier accentuates the whole room. The star of the show, this breathtaking chandelier is enhanced by a beautiful ceiling medallion that we had painted within in gold to capture the elegance and light from this chandelier. As a first impression of the household, this foyer space is truly an introduction to the refinement and dignity of this home, and the people within it.

The gracious pairing of maple's character with the brisk appeal of near-white paint strikes a savory balance in this roomy remodeled kitchen. The inset Chesapeake style establishes a tone of timeless dignity, which is reinforced and softened by the distressed Vintage Nutmeg finish. Note how the cabinetry wraps around and over the doorway into the adjacent laundry room, which is home to more Showplace painted cabinetry.

The Asheville 5 - Vernacular
As American’s population spread westward from the Eastern seaboard, settlers built farmhouses reminiscent of their ancestral homes. The Asheville 5 demonstrates this simplified dignity with its balanced composition, tall first floor windows and quiet trimwork. The weather-protective wrap-around porch and window shutters are a nod to the practical considerations that life on the open prairie required.

The clients wanted a signature storage piece for their books as well as a place to store misc items and files. This custom designed unit is located in a transitional space between the entrance to the loft and the main living areas. The idea was to give this space some "dignity" while serving the intended functions. The solution incorporates cold rolled steel as a backdrop and support for the cantileverd mahogany shelves. The storage unit is veneered in pomele sapele which was stained to match the shelves. The storage unit contains cabinets with adjustable shelves, drawers and a long file drawer.

This project started small, with the clients’ desire to remodel the existing kitchen. When our analysis of the existing conditions revealed the extent to which the house’s many previous additions had failed to enrich each other or unify the whole, the scope of work bloomed to include extensive renovations throughout the first floor. We’ve sought to bring a cohesion and clarity to this already commodious house quite beautifully sited.
Much of the design attention in this project was focused on meetings and overlaps. The autonomy and dignity of individual spaces was restored with the creation and use of interstitial spaces; the spaces between. The doorway between kitchen and dining becomes a display pantry and wet bar, the entry foyer is framed with a narrower opening, and the way to the Living Room is re-shaped with a paneled deep jamb.
The story is recounted in the January / February 2013 edition of New England Home.

"Fall is the perfect time to apply a coat of chic gray paint. Gray is a "metal" color associated with immortality, structure & stability, gray is also linked with age and wisdom -suggesting stability, calm, practicality and dignity. I love grey!"
