Situated on a beautiful lot on Old Chesterbrook Road, the modern home design takes advantage of the lot’s natural contours and sight-lines. Spread throughout three levels, the home contains five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, one half-bath, and a three-car garage. The main level of our modern home design features an open-floor plan designed to entertain family and friends. The entry flows into both the grand dining room and the central area, dedicated to the kitchen, breakfast and a double height great room that opens to a large outdoor deck with picturesque views of the expansive backyard. Located just off the garage is a functional mudroom that features plenty of storage space. In addition to a large home office and powder room, the entire left wing is dedicated to a private master suite with an expansive custom his/her walk-in closet, a master bath with a rainfall shower and a free-standing soaking tub with his/her vanities. The upper level of our modern home design features three generously sized en-suite bedrooms with full baths and closets with a full-size laundry room with plenty of storage space. This single family home sits on a tight, sloped site. Within a modest budget, the goal was to provide direct access to grade at both the front and back of the house. The solution is a multi-split-level home with unconventional relationships between floor levels. Between the entrance level and the lower level of the family room, the kitchen and dining room are located on an interstitial level. Within the stair space “floats” a small bathroom. The generous stair is celebrated with a back-painted red glass wall which treats users to changing refractive ambient light throughout the house. Black brick, grey-tinted glass and mirrors contribute to the reasonably compact massing of the home. A cantilevered upper volume shades south facing windows and the home’s limited material palette meant a more efficient construction process. Cautious landscaping retains water run-off on the sloping site and home offices reduce the client’s use of their vehicle. This 1960s rambler in Normandy Park came with a distinctive mid-century modern charm, thanks to its exposed beams and tongue-and-groove wood ceilings. The homeowners wanted to preserve that character while introducing modern conveniences and updated finishes. Custom wood cabinetry was chosen to harmonize with the natural wood elements, keeping the space warm and inviting. Clean, neutral countertops and ceramic tile flooring provide a fresh, durable foundation, while under-cabinet lighting brightens the workspace and highlights the details. The kitchen also includes direct access from the garage for everyday convenience. A unique feature—the backside of the living room’s original wood-burning oven—was cleaned and reimagined as a display nook, honoring the home’s history while giving it a functional twist. The result is a kitchen that blends beautiful natural character with modern updates, perfectly balancing the old and new.

Part of a multi-phase remodeling project, Pomona is a new addition that creates a spa-like master bathroom for its fully work-from-home owners, and incorporates a new laundry room, separate toilet room, and direct access to the outdoors. In reconfiguring the original master bedroom, the old bathroom was transformed into a second closet. The clients had a very clear vision and were very involved in the choice of materials, which informed the design of the spaces. The floor and wall tile was chosen in advance of the project. A clean, crisp, light aesthetic guided the design. Solid oak drawer fronts on the custom floating vanity were carved in lieu of applied pulls. Wherever possible, lines where materials meet are flush and seamless. The floating bench in the shower is made of the same stone as the countertop. The shower is separated by a single pane of glass from the vanity area and the floor slopes barrier-free from the freestanding tub to the drain. Clerestory windows wash the sloped ceiling in light and open the view to the sky. The ceiling lines, the tile and the glass all align to contribute to the serene feeling of the space. Special electric features include outlets inside the center drawer, electric floor heat and towel warmers.
