Trees and slopes, oh my! Discover how we designed an effective solar system on this shaded and rolling property that not only exceeds production estimates but maintains the aesthetics and beauty of this gorgeous home and landscape. We work hard to get our customers what they want. This project required 44 modules. The roof area was constrained by trees, and the ground was constrained by a steep slope, property line setbacks. Additionally, we did not want to interrupt the views from the house across this lovely country property and into the woods. Our solution, split the system up by using approx. 1/3rd of the modules on the roof with microinverters (due to shade possibilities), and the remaining 2/3rds on the ground. We kept the ground array at a low slope* to better conceal it from view. It was remarkably successful and has been exceeding production estimates. *Tilt or slope of an array is not nearly as critical as orientation. 42*, roughly equal to our latitude, is good for a better average monthly production. A steeper slope will give you increased winter production, and a lower slope will give you greater summer production, which is really the best choice. Why? The ideal angle of incidence at which the sun hits a module is 90*. At our latitude, on winter solstice Dec.21st, the sun is roughly 22.5* degrees above the horizon. At summer solstice it is approximately 70* above the horizon. Therefore, when the days are longer in the summer, a lower sloped array will be closer to 90* to the sun, and since the days are longer, the collection time is greatly increased.

A balanced mix of alder base cabinets and soft white uppers keeps the space warm and inviting, while the custom hood and patterned backsplash add tailored detail. This space required a bit of thoughtful “surgery” to achieve the final layout. The original built-in pantry was removed, allowing us to relocate the refrigerator and introduce a functional side cabinet, which in turn created the opportunity for a double oven configuration on the kitchen side. Originally, the refrigerator occupied the wall where the ovens are now, alongside a freestanding range. Reworking this layout significantly improved both function and flow within the space. During demolition, we discovered the main waste line from the upstairs bathrooms running through this wall—a fairly common condition in homes of this type. Situations like this are exactly why careful planning and on-site problem solving are so important to a successful project. The end result is a kitchen that feels intentional, balanced, and far more functional than the original layout.

The cabana naturally rises from the hillside, a quiet gesture of respect for the land. Instead of flattening or reshaping the terrain, the team studied it, honored it, and translated it into architecture that responds to its environment. A focus on sustainability and minimal environmental impact guided every decision in the pool house design. The stucco façade supports the ivy’s climb. Porcelain pavers by Cancos form the patio and interior floor, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor plane. Inside, the floor is heated with radiant systems underneath, and above, a slatted white oak ceiling conceals integrated linear LED lighting and built-in heaters, making the space a true four-season retreat. Landscape lighting is woven throughout the property, ensuring the architectural experience continues long after sunset. Materials were locally sourced, and the finishes were kept natural, allowing the building to blend into the surroundings without imposing. A Living Roof, A Living Legacy Topped with a thriving, green roof and wrapped in lush Boston ivy, the structure feels more discovered than built. The living roof, engineered for structural support and walkability, is planted with a mix of native, low-maintenance seedlings that require mowing just twice a year. It provides thermal insulation, encourages biodiversity, and visually softens the entire structure. Pollinators and birds now share the roof, proof of how architecture can coexist with ecology.
