This is a small garden (approx. 600 sq. ft.) next to a corner townhome in an urban setting in Baltimore’s popular Hampden neighborhood. We transformed this former weed patch into a thriving and beautiful pollinator garden of mostly native plants. The client specifically wanted flowering plants for all pollinators, but especially hummingbirds, and the garden was to be bird friendly as well. I designed the garden and installed it with the help of landscape contractors. I located a water fountain against the rear wall. The client also desired a vine to cover the rear wall so I selected the Trumpet Vine which is growing beautifully. I continue to oversee the maintenance of this garden. The result is a beautiful landscape with more usable and functional areas for outdoor living and enjoyment. Filled with an abundance of diverse, lower-water plants and enhancements. A feast for the eyes and senses for the homeowners to enjoy throughout the seasons, that also welcomes the birds, bees and butterflies. We replaced and expanded the patio outside the home's sliding doors to provide more space for dining and entertaining. Full-range bluestone was selected for its warm and cool tones for the patio, stairs and the long curvaceous pathway that leads to a smaller patio. Shaded by the majestic oak tree, this patio at the back of the property is another welcoming destination for peaceful relaxation. It is boarded by a stone seat wall constructed with "Rocky Mountain Gold Glacier" natural stone that provides additional seating, functionality and compliments the bluestone beautifully. "Granitecrete" (a material similar to Decomposed Granite) was chosen as the surface for other pathways and a small area designed to include a bench and a curved trellis with a lowering vine. It also surrounds the dramatic tall planters with Kumquat trees, and the stately water feature. A variety of Mediterranean plants and grasses fill the garden with movement texture and fragrance, designed in shades of green, gray, purple and white. A low-water Kurapia ground surrounds the main pathway pavers.

The original small 2 bedroom dwelling was deconstructed piece by piece, with every element recycled/re-used. The larger, newly built home + studio uses much less energy than the original. In fact, the home and office combined are net zero (the home’s blower door test came in at Passive House levels, though certification was not procured). The transformed home boasts a better functioning layout, increased square footage, and bold accent colors to boot. The multiple level patios book-end the home’s front and rear facades. The added outdoor living with the nearly 13’ sliding doors allows ample natural light into the home. The transom windows create an increased openness with the floor to ceiling glazing. The larger tilt-turn windows throughout the home provide ventilation and open views for the 3-level contemporary home. In addition, the larger overhangs provide increased passive thermal protection from the scattered sunny days. The conglomeration of exterior materials is diverse and playful with dark stained wood, concrete, natural wood finish, and teal horizontal siding. A fearless selection of a bright orange window brings a bold accent to the street-side composition. These elements combined create a dynamic modern design to the inclusive Portland backdrop.
