The conception of the Montrose Garage project, driven by the site and the client’s program, became a lynchpin on the site by reorganizing movement around it. The building, echoing the contemporary materials and aesthetic of the primary residence, is the northern boundary of a courtyard creating the built edge of this urban lot. The garage structure could be characterized as an “Eroded Shed”. With a simple sloped roof, site influences and program requirements strategically carve away at the basic rectangular volume, creating dynamic architecture. The project is located on a tight site on a residential block with an alley at the northern edge of the property. To maximize access and convenience for the client, the project created vehicular access at two points on the site, through the main driveway at the south side and through the alleyway. The “Truck Port” allows vehicular access from both sides of the site. Sliding barn doors open up to the deck/courtyard during parties and social gatherings, and a sitting porch at the exercise studio opens to a beautiful view of the surrounding mountain landscape. Perched in the foothills of Edna Valley, this single family residence was designed to fulfill the clients’ desire for seamless indoor-outdoor living. Much of the program and architectural forms were driven by the picturesque views of Edna Valley vineyards, visible from every room in the house. Ample amounts of glazing brighten the interior of the home, while framing the classic Central California landscape. Large pocketing sliding doors disappear when open, to effortlessly blend the main interior living spaces with the outdoor patios. The stone spine wall runs from the exterior through the home, housing two different fireplaces that can be enjoyed indoors and out. Because the clients work from home, the plan was outfitted with two offices that provide bright and calm work spaces separate from the main living area. The interior of the home features a floating glass stair, a glass entry tower and two master decks outfitted with a hot tub and outdoor shower. Through working closely with the landscape architect, this rather contemporary home blends into the site to maximize the beauty of the surrounding rural area.

The wall dividing the kitchen from the dining room was replaced by a peninsula which serves as a prep and serving area or as an informal dining counter. This element also houses base cabinets that are full of storage with recycling and trash bins that are neatly hidden. An efficient work triangle between the fridge, sink and range offers the cook a work space in which she can thrive, whether it's cooking for two or for twenty! Other changes made to create a more comfortable and efficient space include: moving the compact washer/dryer to the hallway and replacing them with full-sized appliances. The dining room closet was re-oriented to the hallway and converted into a linen closet. The door to the hallway was removed and the opening made slightly wider: all key elements for better function and improved spacial flow. Old tile removed from the dining room floor revealed a nice surprise: hardwood flooring! Floors were refinished throughout the home. Aesthetics were partly driven by the client's love of the Jersey Shore. So, like a handful of beach pebbles and sand, the colors are clean, bright and natural. Materials are durable and easy to clean, yet stylish and of the highest quality. So bring on the holidays! This cook's new kitchen is ready for the entire family!

A DEANE client returned in 2022 for an update to their kitchen remodel project from 2006. This incredible transformation was driven by the desire to create a glamorous space for entertaining. Taking the space that used to be an office, walls were taken down to allow the new bar and tasting table to be integrated into the kitchen and living area. A climate-controlled glass wine cabinet with knurled brass handles elegantly displays bottles and defines the space while still allowing it to feel light and airy. The bar boasts door-style “wave” cabinets in high-gloss black lacquer that seamlessly conceal beverage and bottle storage drawers and an ice maker. The open shelving with integrated LED lighting and satin brass edging anchor the marble countertop.

Plantings frame the front entry. The clients of this project desired a cohesive landscape where neighborhood children could gather and play and adults could also congregate for large parties. A pool and paved drive court provide multiple areas for play while a raised terrace allows for supervision as well as separation. Although the circulation was driven by the needs of the children, it does not impose on the adult spaces. The landscape provides enjoyment for the whole family in a safe and beautiful environment.

Like most of our remodels, this kitchen design was driven by our clients' modern style. As we started the design process with our client, the existing stamped concrete that had been installed before the remodel was something very special to our client. So we intentionally selected materials that would complement the unique floor. We removed the carpet and installed a large format 24x48 Unica Carbon porcelain tile. The kitchen cabinets feature two tones, the upper stacked cabinets are a crisp white and the base cabinets are a grey tone. With the stacked cabinets, our client wanted to add a functional ladder that would assist in reaching those high cabinets. The custom ladder adds visual appeal while also being very functional. The countertops are completed in a white quartz with soft grey veining. The quartz waterfall edge on both sides of the island creates a clean finish. Let's talk about the wood-slatted ceiling treatment, adding texture and warmth to this very modern kitchen. We did add the grey-tone cabinets to the living room to create a custom entertainment center to complement the kitchen in this open concept space.
