A cantilevered bay over the garage draws attention away from the existing front garage doors, while a dormered addition off to the side beckons visitors to the reconfigured entrance. This park-side cottage needed an update. Susan Currie Design gave it a sophisticated transitional facelift. Inspired by two pieces of modern art the homeowner loved, Susan set to work on the sunny living room. The owner wanted to keep her vintage sofa, so we restyled the arms, added a bench cushion, and reupholstered it in taupe velvet. Purple is this room’s strongest pop of color, wowing visitors and feel fresh. Modern quartz lamps, a sleek black console table, and geometric wallpaper on one wall keep the space from feeling too traditional. In the guest bedroom, a custom headboard makes guests feel like royalty. Plenty of pillows, embroidered bedding, and crystal lamps complete the luxurious look. Three full baths were all treated in elegant white and gray. These rooms are deluxe, with Calacatta Gold marble countertops and shower walls and inset cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was hired as the remodeling contractor for this first floor remodel in the countryside of Oconomowoc, WI. By opening the kitchen up to the living room, the layout is better for hosting family gatherings. The entire family can be together in the kitchen and living room – cooking or spending time together. Highlights of this country kitchen include a window seat, walk-in pantry and space for their treasured piano. Project Goals + Restore the beauty of their family home, that was built by the homeowner’s grandfather + Cooking functionality for their family farm + Add a workstation sink for easy food prep + Pantry storage space for canned items & wine collection + Design that honors the mid-century ranch bones of the house her grandfather built and their own traditional style Challenges & Issues + Needed space to highlight their piano, since the homeowner is an avid pianist + Old layout didn’t have good views of their outdoor space – the lake, gardens and chicken coop + Kitchen was too small and cut off from the rest of the home + The heat and air conditioning did not function well due to several past additions Country Kitchen Features: Cooking Kitchen – We created a larger kitchen by expanding into the old dining room. The homeowners needed more space for canning vegetables, cooking and entertaining. Mid-Century Country Design – The ranch home was built in the 1950s so we kept the mid-century and country kitchen design aesthetic by using hickory wood, tall verticals and long horizontals. Kitchen Window Seat – A custom window seat with a curved backrest creates a gathering spot in the kitchen. This connects the home to the outdoor view of the lake where the family fishes and ice skates in winter. The bench is large enough to be used as a guest bed when they have visitors. The cozy nook has shelving, art lights, and a hidden radiator underneath to keep it warm and toasty. Window Backsplash – Along the range wall, a new window backsplash features the beautiful view of the farm driveway, trees and gardens. Minimalistic Hood – The hood with the wood shelf mimics the new fireplace mantel and ties the country kitchen and living room together. New Pantry – The old kitchen area was converted into the new pantry and a laundry room. The pantry is their working kitchen where they can store food, their wine collection, and have countertop space for small appliances. Butcher block countertops, colorful wallpaper and a new window make the pantry inviting. Adjustable shelves allow for flexible storage options. The pocket door can be closed when they have guests. Recycled Ash Flooring in Kitchen – The homeowners chose an eco-friendly flooring for their country kitchen. The beautiful varied width wood planks are from recycled ash trees from Milwaukee parks. Workstation Sink – This sink has sliding platforms that hold bowls, colanders and cutting boards to multiply the countertop by going deep instead of wide. The sink can be used to chop, rinse, prep, dry dishes, hold hot dishes and clean up after a meal more efficiently. Country House Living Room: New Tile Floor – To better conduct the heat, we replaced the old wood floors with porcelain tile. New radiators, insulation, ductwork, and enclosing the basement staircase improved the function of their HVAC. Fireplace Makeover – To create a new focal point for the living room, we installed a new fire box, new mantle, and floor to ceiling stone. The goal was to draw the eye up to the vaulted beamed ceiling. Open Concept Layout – The wall between the kitchen and living room was removed to connect the two spaces. We added new cabinetry along the wall with a tall bookcase. Since they didn’t use their formal dining room, a small dining table was added to the living room. New Railing & Stairs – The staircase to the kitchen area was tricky because we needed to find a style that would make it feel airy. We did a glass enclosure with a simple metal railing and moved the staircase to the center of the room to allow room for the piano.

Saturday, May 30, 9:30 to 11:00am | Atlanta Restoration of the Goodrum House & Garden by Spencer Tunnell II and Matt Sussman of Tunnell + Tunnell Landscape Architecture (TTLA) A prominent central driveway punctuates the front lawn, guiding visitors toward the exquisitely restored house and inner grounds. Completed in 1932 and recently restored to its original period design, this English Regency-style home was designed by renowned architect Philip Trammell Shutze for May Patterson Goodrum, the widow of a wealthy Atlanta businessman. Originally built on five acres in the Buckhead neighborhood of north Atlanta, the stucco exterior and geometric design of the house and landscape emulates the grand architectural concepts popularized during the reign of King George IV in early 19th century England. Combining their professional expertise, the site’s architect and landscape architect worked closely throughout the restoration process, drawing on the home’s original design plans, historic photographs, and interviews with former neighbors to ensure that the project accurately reflected Shutze’s intent. An archaeological excavation and detailed paint analysis provided further insight. Restoring the property’s grounds required recreating lost elements of the period-style landscape, including stunning allées and large boxwood and perennial gardens framed by restored garden walls. Located on a wooded site, a single-story 1950s house with an awkward floor plan was strategically remodeled to provide living spaces that connect to the outdoors and respond to the needs of a young family. This home had undergone successive alterations over the years, resulting in a fragmented, confusing layout. With only minor changes to the footprint, the architects redesigned this midcentury home to blur the boundary between indoor living and the landscape beyond. The new design effects a dramatic change by reorganizing the space into linear zones, raising the roof in key places, and making two small additions. A concrete wall links a new music studio and detached garage to the main house, forming an entry court that welcomes visitors and screens the private bedroom spaces nearby. The entry is marked by a series of round skylights, while the living room has been opened up with taller ceilings, a new fireplace and walls of glass. A series of long colored boxes provides storage and utility spaces, while planar elements draw the eye through the house to the landscape beyond. Teak cabinets, blackened steel and Douglas fir contrast with more modest materials such as painted MDF panels, fiber-cement siding and painted gypsum wallboard. Bye, Dialogue led by Kimberly Mercurio of Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture Designed by twentieth-century landscape architect A.E. Bye, the Pittman Residence in Falls Village, Connecticut features an artistic landscape design both inspired by and accentuating the area’s natural ecological character. Embodying the architect’s own creative aesthetic, the property incorporates various undulating landforms that draw on the presence of natural shadows to create a memorable landscape that lingers in the minds of visitors long after they bid the property ado. This season, join landscape architect and scholar Kimberly Mercurio as she leads an engaging dialogue on the design history of the Pittman Residence and the significance of Bye’s play on shadows in landscape architecture. With her immense knowledge of A.E. Bye’s work, having recently completed the A.E. Bye/Landscape Architecture Archives Research Fellowship at Penn State University and received a grant from Dumbarton Oaks to further study and document his achievements, Mercurio’s presentation promises to be both educational and inspiring.
