On the R is a sour Cherry tree, rated as hardy to zone 3, which can overwinter in a raised container garden in our climate. It has put on explosive growth in the sunny site, and yielded many blossoms (not shown), and fruit even in its first year of planting. It is self-fertilizing, so a second cherry tree is not required, which is desirable, given the tight spacing in this back yard. Near it are planted flowers which are pollinator magnets.

This is an example of a mid-sized victorian full sun backyard gravel formal garden in San Francisco.

In south Seattle, a tiny backyard garden needed a makeover to add usability and create a sitting area for entertaining. Raised garden beds for edible plants provide the transition between the existing deck and new patio below, eliminating the need for a railing. A firepit provides the focal point for the new patio. Even hot peppers can be grown in USDA zone 4/Canada zone 5, provided they are bred for short season climates. This summer, the peppers took off once the hot weather started; this is a milder hot pepper, rating relatively low on the heat scale. This is a Greek variety, so it helps to have some sizzling hot weather to make them feel they are back in the Mediterranean! Pinkie finger for reference -early August.

Gravel paths wrap raised edible beds at the garden's edge. As with the orchard, these beds offer the family chances to encounter neighbors and passersby - and save the occasional trip to the grocery store.

These 'Golden Dorsett' apples are planted near the 'Anna' apples int his garden. They cross polinate and produce better yields. Both are early ripening varieties with low chill requirements. Perfect for out Southern California climate.

HERBS IN RAISED BALCONY CONTAINERS: many herbs grow beautifully on a sunny balcony; sage is particularly good for dry, windy sites, which balconies (and rooftops) can be. For comfort and convenience, these herbs are grown here in a raised, lightweight, mobile container (from City Farmer USA).

Strawberries grow well on S facing balconies, but only the Alpine varieties (not the regular varieties) can overwintered outside on a balcony in our climate, USDA zone 4/Canada zone 5. They can survive winter after winter, but it is still helpful to use a straw or pine needle mulch to add a layer of protection. Nevertheless, if you love the larger strawberries, you can grow them in larger containers during the clement weather, and start over with new plants in the spring.
