A compact border in a private pool garden packs hot colors in a hot area of the garden. Zinnias, snapdragons, annual Rudbeckia and dahlias are combined with herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers to create a mixed edible border in a tight space. Containers on the stone deck add cooler tones to the color scheme and more herb pots are set out.

This custom Ipe fence was just right to create a buffer between the driveway and the garden. The clients were interested in growing food as well as keeping bees (bees were in the rear garden). The welded wire mesh allowed for viewing the garden from outside the fence and the strong Ipe structure was a perfect hoist for the Kiwi vines to grow on.

During mid-June 2026: the day of planting of the Edible Garden (delayed because of the cool spring weather and low soil temperatures). Raised bed #2 is used for plants preferring cooler weather - i.e the traditional assortment of northern European herbs and vegetables. It has more of an Eastern sun exposure than bed #1. All the new landscaping, including hardscaping i.e. positioning the cedar beds, and adding new stepping stones was done by Judith Slater and co-workers. The homeowner also had a significant participatory "hand" in it! This was definitely a full participation garden involving homeowner and landscaper.

Organically grown marigolds, from untreated seeds, produce edible flowers which can be used to decorate salads and vegetables (they have a slightly peppery taste). In addition, they repel tomato nematodes; however, only specific varieties of marigolds have this property. So this hard-working, beautiful flower amply justifies its presence in this space-limited balcony garden.

The garden is tended by the owners themselves, and it shows the love. In order to deserve their placement in an entry garden, vegetables need to be impeccably maintained, and these are.

The before pictures (front of house) - The client asked to reduce maintenance and refresh the shrub plantings. The spruce trees had dropped a lot of needles in the beds. In addition, there was quite a bit of grass to mow, and the client wanted more edible options.

During the day of planting (latter half of June) in raised bed #1 (delayed because of the cool 2026 spring and low soil temperatures). The soil is now warm enough to plant edibles which thrive in warm weather and prefer warmer soil: Tomato, Basil, Marigolds - all have similar preferences. It will not be necessary to mow any grass around the beds, because gravel (with a thick layer of cardboard underneath) prevents both weeds and grass from poking through, making for fewer maintenance chores.
