Overview: Wing-like roofline houses a dramatic white villa in Costa Rica jungle. Studio Saxe was commissioned to design a villa on the hilltops of Santiago in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. The primary objective was not only to provide dwellers with a connection with its jungle surroundings but also to generate an intimate relationship with an amazing view of the shoreline which brings its dwellers back to a more profound appreciation of the natural world. Concept Studio Saxe decided to create a large roof that would house within a series of bedrooms and living spaces that would all be turned sideways in order to face the prominent views. Interstitial spaces within the living volumes create gaps that enhance a deeper connection to the natural surroundings whilst moving about the dwelling. Design Every space in the home has been angled to view the ocean, and this twist creates a geometric relationship between the roofline and the spaces that became the primary element of design that both addresses the need for large overhangs (for climate control and comfort) but also generates a literal connection between the view and every space. Our team was approached by a lovely client in early January 2022 to undertake a full home renovation project. The scope of the project initially included updating the interior of the home, with a focus on the kitchen, flooring, all the bathrooms, and the basement. We also took on the task of painting the entire interior of the house, giving it a fresh and updated look. As the project progressed, the client expressed interest in updating the exterior of the home as well. We worked with them to design and build a new deck that provided a functional and stylish space for outdoor entertaining. We also tackled the landscaping of the front and backyard of the property, creating a cohesive and inviting look that complemented the updated interior design. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the client to ensure that their vision was realized, taking care to incorporate their input and preferences into every aspect of the design. We also prioritized functionality and durability, selecting materials and finishes that would stand the test of time and provide lasting value for the homeowner. Despite the scale of the project, we were able to complete it in just four months, from day one to last one. Jutting out from the rock cliff, this high-end home has a breathtaking view at every angle of the valley below and surrounding mountains. A portion of the pool is suspended 400 in mid-air, presenting us with somewhat of a construction challenge. It was a requirement to drain the pool for winter and as such every pipe had to gravity drain into the surge tank below. Two-thirds of the pool water volume is stored in a cistern immediately below to be circulated during the winter. In order to have the option for use throughout the year the pool was covered with a Hydralux cover and heated during the winter months. This Hydralux cover had to be installed with extreme precision in the pool, as well as, the additional Hydralux installed for the whirlpool. As the pool infinity edge challenges the water levels the cover operates on, the levels need to be maintained at all times. Special water systems were installed in order to achieve this with a simple red light indicator for the home owners ease of use. In a high-end home such as this, all work must be done to a high level of precision including installing all the equipment in the mechanical room in a neat, organized and tidy manner. Even though the mechanical systems for the pool and whirlpool operations are complex it needed to have elements of simplicity for the owner and their caretakers to operate. To further enhance the customers enjoyment of this luxurious pool, a UV, Ozone and Chlorinator Sanitation System, as well as, a Turbo Clean System were included. The exterior lighting is all managed in order for the areas to be lit without drawing your attention to light fixtures. Black Interstyle glass tile throughout the pool and whirlpool interiors give the water elements of the home a mountain lake aspect while the geometric design maintains the modern look to the home. An oculus over the whirlpool allows natural light into the covered area, creating a spectacular effect. For the perfect resort feel, a tanning ledge was included in the pool and for that late night swim, a set of LED lights were added.
