These custom built cabinets hide everyday office supplies and provide a work surface for the homeowner that enabled them to keep the original windows to the house.

When Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family. The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space. The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm. Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace. Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family. In addition, we removed the wall between the former family room and den, which opened the layout and allowed for a new eating area featuring a custom-built banquette. This change enables an unobstructed view from the front to the back of the house and lets the eating area bask in both morning sunlight and a picturesque view of Mt. Cheam.

Our latest redesign of this home’s main level seamlessly blends architectural elegance with contemporary comfort. The foyer now makes a striking first impression, featuring refined wall molding, a fresh coat of paint, and a custom veneer bench seat. A breathtaking chandelier in polished nickel and crystal serves as the focal point, adding a layer of timeless sophistication. Moving into the family room, we introduced a textured Manila hemp wallpaper on the ceiling, evoking the soft movement of clouds. The fireplace was refaced in quartz while the existing mantel was carefully reapplied per the client’s request. A 14-foot curved performance fabric sofa, complemented by custom velvet throw pillows, sets the stage for a welcoming yet luxurious space. To enhance the room’s flow, we incorporated a 10-foot diameter rug that follows the sofa’s elegant curve, along with new drapery, swivel chairs, and carefully selected occasional tables. Storage and smart functionality were key in this redesign. Custom cabinetry flanking the fireplace provides ample storage while floating shelves above, equipped with smart home-enabled LED strip lighting, showcase thoughtfully curated accessories. In the powder room, we introduced an ebony veneer push-to-open custom vanity topped with a striking Calacatta Viola marble sink. A custom mirror and premium light fixtures accentuate the rich new paint colors, elevating this small yet impactful space. The result is a refined, harmonious interior that reflects both the home’s architecture and the client’s desire for warmth and sophistication. This custom built desktop shelving unit, was commissioned by a gentleman with several larger pieces of electronic radio and computer equipment. He was looking for a solution in being able to have an attractive, but functional piece of furniture that enabled him to setup and utilize his equipment, while still being able to access the back of the equipment for wire changes and maintenance. The solution we presented was this desktop radio console with three sliding shelves, carefully measured to be a custom fit for the customer's equipment. Each shelf can support over 90 pounds of weight and will slide all the way out of the overall unit for full maintenance access. A solid vertical board is centered on the second level for mounting, a computer monitor and additional storage space is present on the shelves above and to either side. The unit is made entirely out of solid white oak wood and finished glossy. The wood grain was carefully positioned throughout the project to ensure the grain flowed and matched in an attractive way. Traditional joinery methods were used throughout, to come together into a very solid piece of furniture that will last for years.

Formal, Heart Pine Kitchen Image:5408.1 Working closely with Charlottesville, Va. architect, Robert Paxton, we created this antique heart pine kitchen as part of the restoration of Enniscorthy, one of Albemarle County Virginia’s most venerable estates. The matching breakfronts, to either side of the doorway, display glassware, provide additional storage, and conceal the television. The corner blocks, on the bases, are functional drawers. Architectural elements, consistent with the details of the house, were incorporated into the cabinetry design. Our extensive experience with reclaimed lumber, such as this heart pine, along with our background in classical joinery and traditional, architectural forms, enabled us to participate fully in the evolution of such demanding designs. There were three of these windows in this room and one very wide and very tall window. The three windows were each 144" high. The lined drapery could be pulled halfway into the rod but the customer wanted to expose more of the window. The drapery was tied back with crystal tiebacks. There is no split in the sheer drapery. The sheer was a silky voile. The rods are track rods that have no rings. This will enable the customer to move the drapery if she desires.
