I started with what needed to be stored first, the printer and office supplies on the bottom shelf. If this built in was closer to the dining table I may have wanted to put everyday dishes on it. Things that would be easy to grab. Instead the easy to grab items came from the office. Behind the built-in door is a shredder. The deep drawers hold the ugly office and art supplies. I choose a small desk because the space is small and needed to be used as a walk through to the backyard. Also the larger the desk the more stuff that accumulates on it. A smaller surface is a natural system that encourages tidiness. The key is that is also needs to look good, so people honor it and usually take care of it. I call it creating a sacred space that demands respect. It really works, like magic. But only if everything has a place and if not something needs to go. Purging is powerful!

Single Wall Design Solution: Problem: 650 sq. ft. 1 bedroom apartment needed to be redesigned to allow the new child to take the bedroom, and the parents to live, work, and entertain in the former living room. Solution: Prototype 1.0 is the Single Wall Design Solution, designed to optimize space along a wall, 18" deep, to be used in a single room and provide a bedroom, office, living room, bar, and storage. It allows for the family's daily needs for 24 hours in their small apartment. Fully integrated and changeable, things are made available when they are needed and hidden when they are not. Results: We used the least amount of square footage to maximize the arrangement of the family's home, which resulted in less time wasted, performing activities, or looking for things as there is a place for everything. Our prototype is financially savvy because it allows the living room to do more in a 24-hour span, showing that we only need our bed and night tables for 8 hours of the day, and the other hours of the day we pay for square footage not used. These pieces were designed to be standard sizes so they could be interchangeable, providing a custom layout per client. Life is dynamic, and so space should be too. Our prototype 1.0 introduces a new lifestyle to its users, encouraging wellbeing by design.

Located near the Little Deschutes River in Central Oregon, within the historic Vandert Homestead, the home now boasts bright, open spaces for everyday living, complete with flexible aluminum clad folding doors. Working alongside contractor Bales Inc., architect Jeff Klein from Klein Architecture led the renovation with the goal of opening the once dark interior to natural light and the surrounding landscape. Central to the design was transforming a deteriorating garage into a new functional sunroom, creating a light-filled space that reorients the cabin design toward the patio and natural environment. This thoughtful husband wanted to give his wife an Asian-inspired shade garden with deep cedar soaking tub for her 50th birthday - what a guy! They also wanted to encourage their teenagers and friends to hang out at home - smart thinking! The hot tub and deck had to be designed around large existing conifers. The addition of the overhead structure provides visual interest as well as protecting the hot tub from sap and falling debris. This project illustrates skilled woodworking and a minimalist, textural plant palette. We created two separate patios - one for outdoor dining and one with a gas fire table, perfect for enticing teenagers and their friends!
