Our client had a busy life and his Burnaby home was usually his refuge — a place to relax and unwind after a busy day. But, his home was no longer helping him unwind. He called the My House team to do a minimalist home renovation, to transform his home from busy to one free from distraction and clutter. We started by changing the “vibe” in the kitchen, the homeowner’s favourite place in the home. We removed the kitchen walls, and used a maple-clad beam to match the new maple live-edge bar top. Opening up the kitchen instantly improved sight lines and traffic flow between the kitchen and adjacent rooms. This new layout also allowed us to create much needed additional counter top space and storage in the kitchen. The kitchen cabinets were replaced with flat panel, square-edge cabinets and the uppers lift-open. To create an elegant minimalist feel, the full height quartz back splash looks almost like concrete. We also removed the kitchen nook and replaced it with a live-edge counter top, making it a haven to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. Throughout the home, white cabinets help ground and soothe, while the maple accents create warmth without adding unwanted colour or texture. Minimalist Home Renovation: Bathrooms Too We gutted all three bathrooms in this minimalist home renovation and started from scratch. As part of the bathroom renovations, we added new energy-efficient windows. We reconfigured the master bedroom to allow for a full master en suite including a freestanding tub, a usable bench seat for the shower, a wall hung compact toilet, and a minimalist pedestal sink. The new bathtub also has a handheld shower to increase functionality and has a clever built-in ledge to hold a beverage. In this white kitchen renovation, we removed the old wooden shaker-style kitchen cabinetry and replaced them with all new white and grey cabinets, and white marble counter tops. Expertly hidden behind some of these cabinets is the family’s new walk-in pantry. The original space had a small, awkward-shaped kitchen island that was so small it was barely functional or convenient for more than one person to sit at. We gave the homeowners a much larger kitchen island, with a beveled edge, that now has more than enough space for eating, socializing, or doing work. With a large overhang counter top on one side, there is now room for several backless bar stools tucked under the island. You’ll also notice glitters of gold inside the two over-sized lighting fixtures suspended over the island. We created the homeowners a small wok kitchen just off of their new white kitchen renovation. In the main kitchen, we added a ceramic flat cook top and subtle white exhaust hood with an elegant rose-gold trim. Behind it, a white/grey mosaic back splash acts as a wall accent to provide some dimension to the otherwise solid white space. Surrounding the range hood are two large wall cabinets with clear doors to provide extra storage without adding bulk to the newly opened room. The adjacent dining room was also updated to include a long, contemporary dining table with comfortable seating for eight (ten if you want to get cozy). We replaced the low-hanging run-of-the-mill chandelier with a higher, more modern style made of gold and glass. Behind it all is a new dark grey accent wall with a paneled design to add dimension and depth to the new brighter room.

The family who owned this 1965 home chose a dramatic upgrade for their Coquitlam full home renovation. They wanted more room for gatherings, an open concept kitchen, and upgrades to bathrooms and the rec room. Their neighbour knew of our work, and we were glad to bring our skills to another project in the area. Choosing Dramatic Lines In the original house, the entryway was cramped, with a closet being the first thing everyone saw. We opened the entryway and moved the closet, all while maintaining separation between the entry and the living space. To draw the attention from the entry into the living room, we used a dramatic, flush, black herringbone ceiling detail across the ceiling. This detail goes all the way to the entertainment area on the main floor. The eye arrives at a stunning waterfall edge walnut mantle, modern fireplace. Open Concept Kitchen with Lots of Seating The dividing wall between the kitchen and living areas was removed to create a larger, integrated entertaining space. The kitchen also has easy access to a new outdoor social space. A new large skylight directly over the kitchen floods the space with natural light. The kitchen now has gloss white cabinetry, with matte black accents and the same herringbone detail as the living room, and is tied together with a low maintenance Caesarstone’s white Attica quartz for the island countertop. This over-sized island has barstool seating for five while leaving plenty of room for homework, snacking, socializing, and food prep in the same space. To maximize space and minimize clutter, we integrated the kitchen appliances into the kitchen island, including a food warming drawer, a hidden fridge, and the dishwasher. This takes the eyes to focus off appliances, and onto the design elements which feed throughout the home. We also installed a beverage center just beside the kitchen so family and guests can fix themselves a drink, without disrupting the flow of the kitchen. Updated Downstairs Space, Updated Guest Room, Updated Bathrooms It was a treat to update this entire house. Upstairs, we renovated the master bedroom with new blackout drapery, new decor, and a warm light grey paint colour. The tight bathroom was transformed with modern fixtures and gorgeous grey tile the homeowners loved. The two teen girls’ rooms were updated with new lighting and furniture that tied in with the whole home decor, but which also reflected their personal taste. In the basement, we updated the rec room with a bright modern look and updated fireplace. We added a needed door to the garage. We upgraded the bathrooms and created a legal second suite which the young adult daughter will use, for now. Laundry Its Own Room, Finally In a family with four women, you can imagine how much laundry gets done in this house. As part of the renovation, we built a proper laundry room with plenty of storage space, countertops, and a large sink.

This couple wanted to update their tired, old space into a bright and beautiful dream kitchen. Working with our design team, they created an amazing new space that went above and beyond what they could have imagined. The kitchen needed to flow seamlessly to their open living area and needed to incorporate the old with the new. We kept as many original details as possible, but gave everything a fresh new look. The sleek white cabinets and quartz counter-top mix effortlessly with the warm navy blue lower cabinets and detailed scalloped tile backsplash. The neutral floor anchors the room and keeps your eyes drawn to the upper-half of the light-filled space. These days, what’s old is new again, and using brass accents really makes this kitchen on trend. The pendent lighting and drawer pulls add a touch of elegant, classic nostalgia to the space. All these details come together to give this kitchen a subtle nautical feel which brings the home owners much joy.
