Our client wanted a large outdoor living space for grilling, dining, and entertaining with their large, close knit group of friends and family. We were tasked with building a 420 sq foot covered space off the back of their existing home. They wanted this space to be screened in to keep the bugs and heat out during summer months, and to open completely to fully enjoy beautiful spring and fall months. To achieve this we installed remotely operated, motorized aluminum screening that can be raised or lowered at the push of a button. The framing for the screens was recessed into the natural limestone columns to give it a more open look when the screens are raised. We added a recessed seating area outside the patio with a gas fire pit for the family to enjoy during the colder months. A Built in kitchen with an Big Green Egg was installed under the patio for grilling all year round. Texas limestone columns and hand cut flooring with a natural stained cedar ceiling treatment were a must to follow the Texas Hill Country design. The house is oriented with maximum exposure and majority of the glazing to the southerly aspect, to greatly reduce energy costs by embracing passive solar gain and natural lighting. The other aspects of the home have minimal glazing, to insulate for the prevailing winds and harsh winter temperatures. We designed the layout so the living spaces are enjoyed on the southern side of the house and closets, bathrooms, and mechanical on the north. The garage, positioned on the north side of the house, provides a buffer zone to shield it from the northern exposure during the winter. The bedrooms are separated to optimise privacy, with the master bedroom oriented to receive the early morning sunlight coming from the east. A large southern window and glazed sliding door in the lounge room provide passive solar gain during the winter months and shoulder seasons, and the overhang of the eaves give shade during the summer heat. Operable windows have also been carefully planned for cross ventilation, helping to cool the rooms in the summer and bring fresh air in during any season. With thorough consideration given to wind patterns, daylighting, orientation and glazing, Salida del Sol ‘opens the sunrise’ for its operation and its occupants.

There were a lot of workers, a lot of cars and trucks meaning the logistics in a tight side street is tricky. They keep everyone moving. No Stopping could be the motto. Once we went in, we signed documents, they took our pictures – my joke was that they did it so they would know who to cut from the show…my joke turned into foreshadowing, unfortunately. Inside the house, it was similar to the outside, lots of people, lots of movement. You had to find an area and not get in the way. Once the taping was about to start, the camera operators were in place, the mics were tested and they yelled: “Quiet on the set”. It felt very official. I enjoyed seeing Jonathan in action because I could see how natural he is in front of the camera. There were not many retakes if any. He really enjoys both the personal conversations as well as the materials and installation conversations. Outside, the neighbors were stopping by and Jonathan could not have been more gracious. He took pics with the neighbors, joked around, and gave hugs. At the end of a hot, sticky day, he jumped into his black limo and was wisked away. We stayed to figure out the installation.”

This Backyard Waterfall project included installation of a pondless waterfall approximately 15' in length on a sloped bank at the area next to the existing pool. The backyard waterfall cascades down the existing embankment. There is still retaining wall work in progress as of this video and pictures being shot. Future landscaping will be installed once surrounding hardscaping has been complete. Rocks and Boulders for this project were chosen and supplied by home owner. This pondless waterfall project was installed in Mohnton (Berks County), PA. Pondless Waterfalls are simply a re-circulating waterfall and/or stream without the presence of a pond. You can enjoy the sight and sound of running water without the maintenance of a pond. The waterfall is undoubtedly the most beautiful and favored feature in a water garden. A pipe runs from there up to a BioFalls Filter and into an overflowing waterfall, where it falls back into the reservoir. Since the water level never pools above the level of the rock and gravel fill, it give the appearance of a waterfall without a pond, when in fact, the “pond” is there but not visible. The Pondless Waterfall has made many water-lovers who were previously unable to indulge in the sweet sounds of falling water, very happy.
