Set in a quiet neighborhood and framed by mature trees, this residence presented a unique opportunity: to thoughtfully evolve a custom mid-century modern home into a space that supports the everyday rhythms of a growing family. With a deep respect for the home’s original architecture, Klopf Architecture reimagined the house to better meet the needs of its owners—introducing functional improvements while preserving the spirit and character of its mid-century roots. The clients approached Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: refresh their home while seamlessly integrating new programmatic elements. Key goals included clarifying and enhancing the entry sequence; connecting the detached garage to the main house with a practical yet architecturally intentional intervention; adding functional spaces such as a mudroom and laundry room; expanding and remodeling the primary suite’s bathroom and closet; and creating a more engaging outdoor space that capitalized on the site’s impressive views, featuring a fire pit and outdoor kitchen. As a couple with distinct yet complementary perspectives—one focused on modern functionality and technology, and the other dedicated to preserving the home’s architectural integrity—their collaboration with Klopf Architecture resulted in a solution that harmonized both ideals. The detached garage sat at a higher elevation than the main house, requiring a solution that ensured architectural and geometric compatibility between the two structures. Rather than create a purely utilitarian link, Klopf Architecture introduced an intentional connection that contributes to the overall architectural language. A notable pinch point in the plan—where differing geometries converged—was treated as a hinge point, turning a potentially awkward juncture into an architectural feature. This area now functions as both a transition and a moment of design interest that unifies the overall plan. The design also addressed the underutilized outdoor area, which was located in a shadowed portion of the site with geometrical limitations. A new connection to the rear deck was created in this same area, making the outdoor space more useful and inviting. The outdoor area now reads as a deliberate extension of the home, embracing natural light and emphasizing the dramatic views. The Willow - Transitional Family Home on Acreage in Brush Prairie, Washington by Cascade West Development Inc. Breaking ground in 2013 and taking about 5 months to build, The Willow is home to a fun-loving family of five. When we were brought onboard the homeowners had a few main design points to ensure long term success. First, the need for a lot of room, either entertaining or relaxing the perfect place cannot be hard to find. True to syle and true to self. From the ground up this home would resonate with their lifestyle and sensibilities, setting the stage for natural materials and a shabby chic (chique) aesthetic. Lastly, to solidify a successful future the home had to somewhat organic. It had to be able to adapt, change and grow with (and like) all the members of the family. Balancing competing forces and still getting everything you want without compromise is what transitional homes are all about. And transitional is our specialty! THE SETUP Sam’s clients wanted to update their hall bathroom used by their three children. The goal was to create a space that is both kid-friendly and elegant, ensuring it remains functional and stylish as the children grow. The original bathroom felt confined due to dark materials and a single-sink vanity. The challenge was to find a design that looks great now and in the future. Design objectives: Create a sense of spaciousness Increase storage for bathroom necessities and daily routines Enhance lighting THE REMODEL Design challenges to be solved: No structural changes – must keep the tub and wall structure Transforming a small, dark space into a bright, open one without adding a new window Multi-user-minded – Improving functionality for multiple users simultaneously Timeless & kid-friendly – create a comfy kid-friendly look that won’t appear dated as the kids grow older THE RENEWED SPACE Design solutions: Slimmer Tub and Sliding Shower Door installed to free up functional space, making the bathroom feel larger. Lighter Materials used to reflect more light and add a vibrant feel. Open shelves above the toilet provide storage without making the space feel cramped, while allowing light from the existing window to permeate. Dual Sink Vanity added, and split the mirror into two, creating individual stations for the kids and enhancing usability during busy routines. Kid-Friendly Features – Incorporated toe-kick lighting that works as a nightlight, a lower-mounted shower handheld, and a large, accessible shower niche. The geometric shapes and blue color palette contribute to a fun yet sophisticated look. The clients are thrilled with the transformation. The bathroom is now fun and elegant, providing a timeless look that will grow with the kids. They appreciate the increased functionality and the bright, open feel of the space. This remodel successfully blends practical solutions with stylish design, ensuring the hall bathroom meets the needs of a busy family while maintaining a sophisticated look.
