JoJo Wong Design and BuildIf you've ever taken a road trip that meandered through the countryside you've probably noticed that simple house sitting at the end of a dirt road. It looks cozy and has a rustic charm that reminds us of a more straightforward way of living. A warm, cozy fire on a chilly fall evening, or sitting on the farmers' porch enjoying a cold iced tea at the end of a long summer day.
Today, as more of us are beginning to appreciate the warmth of that rustic setting, one design style is rapidly growing in popularity. Known as “Modern Rustic” it provides homeowners with the warm, natural, and inviting style of that rural farmhouse, along with the clean, simple lines of modern design.
One of the characteristics of the Modern Rustic design aesthetic is that is evidenced by both the physical rooms, as well as in individual pieces of furniture within the space. The primary design components of this style are the warmth of natural materials and the texture those material provide.
Exposed wood and stone or brick are often used to add character and the appearance of warmth to the aesthetic. These are textures typically found in old hand-built country homes, as these were the building materials available at the time. Woolen objects like rugs and blankets are used as décor to add warm textures to the space. Modern Rustic also uses smooth textures, for example, counter and chairs surfaces and cabinetry. These are the textures that provide the clean and modern feel.
Shape and architecture play a significant role in the overall design environment. Natural elements like stones and wood are typically rough and asymmetrical in their natural state. A Modern Rustic design combines these natural shapes like tree branches, antlers and river stones with rectangles, spheres, and sharp angles. Think Cathedral ceilings, large prominent stairs, huge natural beams, and beautiful stone fireplaces.

Reform ContractingThis particular home located in Cave Springs, Arkansas was an in house design + build. We were tasked with the challenge of figuring out a way to unify our clients contemporary taste, the neighborhood covenants, and the dramatic grade of the lot. When designing, we always feel it’s important to take into account the surrounding natural landscape. We want our homes and nature to complement each other and to lean on each other to enhance the living environment of its inhabitants. We felt strongly that we needed to use the slope of the lot in our design, which led us to create multiple levels to the home.
Too often the garage door is an afterthought and it ends up being a major component of the street view of a home. Due to the extreme grade change over the lot we were able to tuck the garage under the main living area. This concealed the garage door from the street view. The entry is situated between two small level changes. The living space is situated 24” above the entry. This creates a pulling effect that takes you up to an elevation amongst the trees. With windows on all sides, nature calls you out to sit on the covered porch situated in the trees. The kitchen and the dining area sit 24” below the entry level, creating a tucked-in intimate space. The private master suite is located at the top of the floating metal stairs on its own floor. With a workout room, his and hers closets, and a natural lit large master bathroom the space gives the home owners a nice retreat from the rest of the house.
RGR Construction and Roofing, LLCThis oceanfront property in Oak Island, NC required extensive structural repairs after long-term moisture intrusion caused significant deterioration to wall framing, sheathing, and structural components. RGR Construction and Roofing, LLC exposed damaged areas, removed compromised materials, and is rebuilding the exterior wall system to restore structural integrity and meet coastal wind and uplift requirements.
The elevated deck structure and ocean-facing wall required careful coordination to ensure proper load support, sheathing continuity, and weatherproofing. This project highlights the importance of proper construction practices in coastal environments where moisture, salt air, and storms accelerate structural wear.
John Milner Architects, Inc.This mid-nineteenth century Classical Revival townhouse was restored and renovated to provide a contemporary living environment within a grand formal residence. Located in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, the exterior of the building was restored to include new mahogany entrance doors matching the original design. The interiors were carefully modified to preserve significant architectural elements, reintroduce missing original details, and create new spaces featuring custom woodwork and other components designed to accommodate our clients’ specific requirements.

Dynia ArchitectsThis mountain vacation residence places the living and sleeping space for a family of three on the main level with guest bedrooms, recreation rooms, and garage below. The sloped site allows approach and entry on the main level, achieving the appearance of a one-story house. The scheme is an L-shaped, open-plan building containing primary living space covered with a shed roof. This configuration forms a “courtyard” facing southeast, which contains the main entry. Intersected with the shed roof component the mudroom, bedroom, and master closet and bath are contained in “cabins” of stone with arced roofs. The roof support at the northwest corner has been eliminated to allow a sliding glass system which, when open, voids the corner of the family room. This allows the living space to extend onto an elevated concrete terrace overlooking the view.
The result is a living environment that distinguishes public from private uses with form and space, provides outdoor areas of contrasting characteristics in a place of sharp seasonal contrast, and creates an image that blends with the landscape.

Sunspace Design, Inc.Our reach extends beyond New England: in the heart of Sea Island, Georgia, a custom mahogany conservatory roof now stands as another testament to Sunspace Design’s commitment to quality glass construction near and far.
This expansive 14′ x 16′ roof was crafted in our New Hampshire workshop before being sent on a journey south by truck. Upon reaching the job site, our team carefully reassembled it piece by piece. The unit was then crane-lifted into its final position atop the conventionally constructed walls provided by the general contractor. The Sunspace team then finished installation.
Meticulous logistical planning and careful execution made this possible. The project is a great example of productive collaboration between industry professionals. Working hand-in-hand with Ussery-Rule Architects and Joe Bowles Construction (both local to St. Simons Island), Sunspace’s first contribution was the provision of engineered drawings for the local team’s use. Working in sync from afar, the new construction was perfectly prepared to receive our custom glass roof components well before our arrival.
The new space is stunning. Sunlight floods the entertainment area below through high-performance PPG Solarban 70 insulated glass. Glass selection is crucial, and Solarban 70 ensures a comfortable interior environment throughout the year. The exterior is no less beautiful, and is adorned with elegant copper cladding and flashing that creates a striking effect beside the surrounding architecture.
No glass space is more elegant than a traditional conservatory, and here we see a gorgeous example which fuses New England ingenuity and Southern charm. We take immense pride in our contribution and hope the clients enjoy their space for years to come, nature and architecture coexisting in perfect harmony on the shores of Sea Island.
