This mid-nineteenth century Classical Revival townhouse was restored and renovated to provide a contemporary living environment within a grand formal residence. Located in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, the exterior of the building was restored to include new mahogany entrance doors matching the original design. The interiors were carefully modified to preserve significant architectural elements, reintroduce missing original details, and create new spaces featuring custom woodwork and other components designed to accommodate our clients’ specific requirements. This mountain vacation residence places the living and sleeping space for a family of three on the main level with guest bedrooms, recreation rooms, and garage below. The sloped site allows approach and entry on the main level, achieving the appearance of a one-story house. The scheme is an L-shaped, open-plan building containing primary living space covered with a shed roof. This configuration forms a “courtyard” facing southeast, which contains the main entry. Intersected with the shed roof component the mudroom, bedroom, and master closet and bath are contained in “cabins” of stone with arced roofs. The roof support at the northwest corner has been eliminated to allow a sliding glass system which, when open, voids the corner of the family room. This allows the living space to extend onto an elevated concrete terrace overlooking the view. The result is a living environment that distinguishes public from private uses with form and space, provides outdoor areas of contrasting characteristics in a place of sharp seasonal contrast, and creates an image that blends with the landscape.

This 2019 project for award-winning engineer and former Blackbird Academy instructor Ernesto Olvera-LaPier was one of NILES’ earliest ventures into designing and building a fully formal Dolby Atmos mixing and mastering environment. The result is a highly accurate, purpose-built suite engineered to meet the strict demands of immersive audio work. The room is completely acoustically isolated from the surrounding structure. Sound-reducing wall systems sit atop floating-floor assemblies, paired with a full soft-ceiling bass trap, a false rear-wall trap, and custom full-lite acoustic doors. Dedicated mechanical systems ensure quiet, uninterrupted operation, allowing Ernesto to work with precision at any hour. Monitoring centers around a JBL M2 system seamlessly integrated into the treatment design, providing an immersive, detailed, and articulate listening experience essential for Dolby Atmos production. Every component—from the isolation assemblies to the tuning—was crafted to ensure that the mix translates exactly as intended. The suite is both visually understated and technically advanced, delivering an effortless feel with professional-grade performance throughout.

Retractable Screens, also known as Roll-up Screens and Vertical Rolling Screens are completely customized to meet the needs of the space. Easy to see through and completely retractable, exterior Retractable Screens create a cool, comfortable, insect-free environment without sacrificing your view. Designed to provide superior solar protection, they mitigate UV damage, optimize comfort and provide daytime privacy even in windy settings. Extra sun control can be achieved by increasing thread counts and weave density. Retractable Solar Shades provide energy-efficient sun shading, shelter against bugs and mosquitoes, climate control and rain/wind reduction while allowing outward visibility. Depending on screen fabric selection, our solar shade fabric selections are capable of blocking up to 95% of ultra-violet (UV) rays–saving up to 50% of the energy used to heat and cool homes. Motorize Retractable Screens provide control at the touch of a button. Somfy Motors allow activation by wall mounted toggle switch or several different types of remote control options. Taking cues from the client’s love of luxurious materials, the design team created a captivating environment to reflect the family’s dreams and imagination.
