Nestled atop a wooded ridge in the Hudson Highlands, the architect-owner envisioned a reinterpretation of renowned mid-century experimental “Case Study Homes”. An authentic representation of the materials and a clear outdoor-indoor connection were priorities for the design. Heart pine on the ceiling references the forested surroundings. All cabinets are Bilotta’s private Bilotta Collection cabinetry. The island and wall cabinets are distinctive: natural walnut quarter-sawn veneer trimmed with thin strips of natural walnut solid stock. Matte black on the paneled refrigerator, tall pantry and rear base cabinets frame the area and merge into the black structural columns. Balancing the darker finishes is a single slab of Carrera marble on the backsplash, with Caesarstone in “Concrete” topping the cabinetry. Surrounded by walls of glass, the kitchen is flanked by oversized impressive roof overhangs with exposed joists. Inside, a header was placed to align with the outermost joist and delineate the prep area. Within that footprint, natural heart pine planks line the ceiling, parallel to the outdoor joists. This creates the illusion that the overhang enters the kitchen at one end and exits out the other, further obscuring the line between indoors and out. As a counterpoint to strong vertical cabinet lines and horizontal ceiling lines, a unique bronze scissor-armed light fixture creates a diamond pattern across the length of the kitchen. At the intersection of each arm is an individual half-gold exposed light bulb, resulting in pools of illumination that highlight the beautiful grain pattern and coloration of the wood ceiling – a stunning alternative to ubiquitous recessed lighting. Although it’s not large, this kitchen offers an abundance of storage and countertop space for meal prep and serving. The refrigerator and tall pantry bookend the space; making them equal in size imparts pleasing symmetry. With the sink centered along the back wall and the range centered in the island, there’s plenty of elbow room on each side of the appliances. Everything is within arms’ reach for easy use and fast cleanup. The gray hues of the “Concrete” colored quartz tops and the veining of the Carrera backsplash echo the stone outcroppings in the landscape and provide contrast to the variety of wood tones throughout the room.

Black Oak Construction and Collective Design took our clients’ visions and turned their unfinished basement into a distinctive entertainment hub. Our clients came to us with a large collection of skateboards and equally as impressive collection of rock and roll posters they wanted to display. At the time, they didn’t have any real area to entertain friends and family. They wanted a Gallery/Lounge area, Theater/ Billard’s area a half bath and a workout room. The basement was a little dark. Existing windows on the East and South side were removed and replaced with a bank of 7 windows which then allowed an unobstructed view of their lake. The windows were trimmed to hide motorized blinds used to block the light when movies or sporting events were being watched on one of the flat screens. As you walk in the entertainment room, there is a custom-designed tray ceiling with a lighted display constructed to hold 42 of the skateboards. The challenge was in hanging the skateboards in it. Originally it was to be metal but it didn’t securely hold a skateboard. Our carpenters used bolts and magnets to solve the problem and hold them securely. It turned out to be the focal point of the entire area. Centered in the rec room is a bar area with visual site to most of the rec room. The front of the bar is trimmed uniquely to add dimension. The cabinets above the bar have a lighted linear wine rack. There are two comfortable areas to watch a game or music video. The homeowners brought in a KC Chiefs theme in the furnishings. One wall was dedicated to jerseys, memorabilia and stadium seats. Behind the large red couch is a custom metal sofa table that spells out CHIEFS. The workout room has a waterproof floating floor. By adding nearly frameless glass doors going in, the room feels like a part of the rest of the rec room. Framed rare posters hang throughout the entertainment area. A custom “skateboard” table is in one of the sitting areas. Pinball machines were added to provide another form of play. When finished, this was not your usual rec room by any means. This was a client ordered, construction delivered entertainment setting sure to be enjoyed for years to come.

A sweeping row of premium chaise lounges with crisp white cushions lines one side of the pool, shaded by a series of elegant teak-framed market umbrellas that bring a Riviera-resort sensibility to the suburban backyard. The stone hardscape tells a particularly rich material story. Dry-stacked natural stone retaining walls curve generously around the lower elevation of the pool, their warm amber, rust, and gray tones echoing the travertine patio above and connecting the pool structure organically to the sloped terrain. Stone steps with flagstone treads descend gracefully between levels, and large natural boulders are thoughtfully placed throughout the landscaping — giving the entire environment the feeling of a discovered natural water feature rather than a constructed pool. A dedicated outdoor living room sits on the patio, anchored by a woven-rope lounge chair and a coordinating sofa with generous cream cushions, gathered around a sculptural concrete pedestal side table. The furniture selection — organic, tactile, and resort-caliber — creates a seating area that feels as comfortable and considered as any indoor living room, with the forest canopy serving as a natural ceiling above. Around the corner, a separate fire pit terrace provides a second distinct outdoor destination. A massive circular stone fire pit — built from the same dry-stacked natural stone as the retaining walls — sits at the center of a gathering space ringed by weathered teak Adirondack-style chairs with white cushions. This zone feels intentionally removed from the pool's energy, offering a quieter, more intimate space for evening gatherings and cooler nights. The house itself — a stunning modern farmhouse with white board-and-batten siding, exposed timber gable trusses, black-framed windows, and a covered back porch with timber posts — anchors the entire composition. The architecture and the landscape speak the same language: natural materials, clean lines, and an effortless relationship between indoor and outdoor living. A separate carriage house or garage structure in matching architectural style rounds out the property's exterior.

Completely enclosed in glass, this custom wine cellar in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, California, is sure to turn some heads. Located directly off of the kitchen and dining room, this custom wine room / glass wine cellar / modern wine cellar / contemporary wine cellar holds upwards of 200 bottles. Glass, Metal, and stone are all utilized in our favorite combination for a gorgeous contemporary masterpiece. Double deep metal wine racks / metal wine racking is utilized here, placed a few feet off of the ground to allow for potential case storage space on the tile below. Black metal wine racking was also chosen, as opposed to silver metal wine racks in order to really make the space pop. The glass here is single pane. Master Wine Cellar Builders and Design Build team at Vintage Cellars recommend using dual paned, thermally insulated glass in wine cellars to minimize potential for condensation, as well as making sure that your wine cellar is able to maintain proper temperature and humidity constantly. Nestled atop a wooded ridge in the Hudson Highlands, the architect-owner envisioned a reinterpretation of renowned mid-century experimental “Case Study Homes”. An authentic representation of the materials and a clear outdoor-indoor connection were priorities for the design. Heart pine on the ceiling references the forested surroundings. All cabinets are Bilotta’s private Bilotta Collection cabinetry. The island and wall cabinets are distinctive: natural walnut quarter-sawn veneer trimmed with thin strips of natural walnut solid stock. Matte black on the paneled refrigerator, tall pantry and rear base cabinets frame the area and merge into the black structural columns. Balancing the darker finishes is a single slab of Carrera marble on the backsplash, with Caesarstone in “Concrete” topping the cabinetry. Surrounded by walls of glass, the kitchen is flanked by oversized impressive roof overhangs with exposed joists. Inside, a header was placed to align with the outermost joist and delineate the prep area. Within that footprint, natural heart pine planks line the ceiling, parallel to the outdoor joists. This creates the illusion that the overhang enters the kitchen at one end and exits out the other, further obscuring the line between indoors and out. As a counterpoint to strong vertical cabinet lines and horizontal ceiling lines, a unique bronze scissor-armed light fixture creates a diamond pattern across the length of the kitchen. At the intersection of each arm is an individual half-gold exposed light bulb, resulting in pools of illumination that highlight the beautiful grain pattern and coloration of the wood ceiling – a stunning alternative to ubiquitous recessed lighting. Although it’s not large, this kitchen offers an abundance of storage and countertop space for meal prep and serving. The refrigerator and tall pantry bookend the space; making them equal in size imparts pleasing symmetry. With the sink centered along the back wall and the range centered in the island, there’s plenty of elbow room on each side of the appliances. Everything is within arms’ reach for easy use and fast cleanup. The gray hues of the “Concrete” colored quartz tops and the veining of the Carrera backsplash echo the stone outcroppings in the landscape and provide contrast to the variety of wood tones throughout the room.

This stunning glass enclosed modern custom wine cellar was designed and installed by Vintage Cellars. The Contemporary Custom Wine Room was fitted into an existing fireplace space, turning the visually unappealing sore thumb of the room into a magnificent show stopping centerpiece. This modern luxury condo on the 31st floor in a downtown San Diego high-rise acted as a very interesting project for the custom wine cellar design team at Vintage Cellars. The modern wine room space has dual paned, insulated glass but because of the nature of glass itself, the cooling unit was recommended to be oversized. The custom wine room space itself didn't have great options for venting the cooling unit due to the location on the 31st floor. The best option to vent was determined to treat the wine room as a wine cabinet, per se. The Cooling Unit, a CellarPro 1800 XTS, was placed in the ceiling, venting down cool air and circulating vented air back upward. The result works perfectly for a uniquely modern and contemporary space such as this. This fully enclosed, glass front custom wine cellar boasts a 300 bottle capacity with a sleek, modern, label forward feel that ULTRA Wine Peg racking is known for. The center section is a double stacked full reveal display row, showcasing some of the homeowner's finer wines. Though no particular space was made within the wine racking area, the design of this modern custom wine cellar was pushed back a couple of feet so that wine case storage could be an option between the glass front and the custom racking. Additionally, the clean feel goes even further upon looking for the entrance into this wine cellar. The flat panel on the furthest left side opens slowly and almost magically when pushed in slightly. Our clients raised three children with a small galley kitchen and equally small eating area. The kitchen remodel was always a thought, but time and money was limited. Two children have since moved, married, and have their own children. Their needs for a larger more functional entertaining kitchen became a necessity. They wanted the ability to have the entire family together simultaneously. Our clients stated the new kitchen has met their every desire and even more than ever imagined.

Party Palace - Custom Ranch on Acreage in Ridgefield Washington by Cascade West Development Inc. Although family togetherness is important sometimes siblings just need a little space. This idea influenced a number of functional rooms in our concept including bedrooms, rec rooms and shared amenities. Most bedrooms became Suites (bathroom attached) and amenities were divided equally. Sisters shared a space separate from the brothers' shared space. Lastly, the eldest (teenagers) earned their own private quarters. There was a small softwood pergola with an equally small brick herringbone terrace beneath, both were over 20 years old. The client wanted to make the space more useable and so we doubled the size of the terrace and the pergola. We were able to keep the existing pergola. After carrying out some repairs to the upright posts, we removed the middle post and installed a length of metal angle iron to support the beams. We then installed more beams to replicate the existing half. Finally we painted the whole structure. H Hopefully it will last another 20 years now.

Black metal wine racking was also chosen, as opposed to silver metal wine racks in order to really make the space pop. The glass here is single pane. Master Wine Cellar Builders and Design Build team at Vintage Cellars recommend using dual paned, thermally insulated glass in wine cellars to minimize potential for condensation, as well as making sure that your wine cellar is able to maintain proper temperature and humidity constantly. Single pane glass simply does not have a high enough R Value of insulation, though it can make the space look a bit more clean and elegant. Nestled atop a wooded ridge in the Hudson Highlands, the architect-owner envisioned a reinterpretation of renowned mid-century experimental “Case Study Homes”. An authentic representation of the materials and a clear outdoor-indoor connection were priorities for the design. Heart pine on the ceiling references the forested surroundings. All cabinets are Bilotta’s private Bilotta Collection cabinetry. The island and wall cabinets are distinctive: natural walnut quarter-sawn veneer trimmed with thin strips of natural walnut solid stock.
