Our clients for this grand mountain lodge wanted the warmth and solidness of timber to contrast many of the contemporary steel, glass and stone architecture more prevalent in the area recently. A desire for timberwork with ‘GRRRR’ equipped to handle the massive snowloads in this location, ensured that the timbers were fit to scale this awe-inspiring 8700sq ft residence. Working with Peter Rose Architecture + Interiors Inc., we came up with unique designs for the timberwork to be highlighted throughout the entire home. The Kettle River crew worked for 2.5 years designing and erecting the timber frame as well as the 2 feature staircases and complex heavy timber mouldings and mantle in the great room. We also coordinated and installed the direct set glazing on the timberwork and the unique Unison lift and slide doors that integrate seamlessly with the timberwork. Huge credit should also be given to the very talented builder on this project - MacDougall Construction & Renovations, it was a pleasure to partner with your team on this project.

A four storey scaffold was erected inside a beautifully finished interior to install this chandelier.

This is 8,000 square foot brownstone "gut" renovation project with a garden located in Hamilton Heights. All Renovation Construction renovated this late 19th century landmark brownstone into seven residential units for developer committed to upper Manhattan. The structure was erected as a member of the so-called “boudoir houses” on St. Nicholas Avenue. It is landmarked in the Harlem - Sugar Hill Historic District

To separate the living room and den, a floating partition was erected that houses the flat-screen TV on the den side (along with cabinets below for the components), and allows traffic to flow from both sides between the two spaces. Even more importantly, light from the living room now cascades into the den, relieving it of its cramped, dark feeling. Two distinct living areas were created that share the natural light.

Where can a line lead you? The Surrealists believed automatically drawing one continuous line could take you into your subconscious. Many artists also use one unbroken line to create two-dimensional portraits or to limn recognizable forms. For Axis Mundi, one uninterrupted line leads to home. Or, more intriguingly, to the rhythmic underlying structure of this concept house for a successful digital entrepreneur in the Palm Springs desert. An homage to Austrian architect Frederick Kiesler’s 1950 “Endless House,” the basic footprint and floor plan derives from a single ribbon looped repeatedly in a single continuous line. The home is enclosed with rammed-earth exterior walls built up along the undulating contours formed by the ribbon, while interior walls are erected around selected voids defined by some of the loops. A faceted tent-like Cor-Ten steel roof—out of which the shape of the floor plan is cut out and replaced with glass—tops the structure. It is both a line of intellectual questioning posed by the designers and a line of continuity that brings fluidity to a living plan for the client in question.

Join me... on a tour of inspiring AquaTekture by Paragon Pools, Las Vegas.
AquaTekture™ is the discipline of designing, engineering and erecting of water environments and ancillary components, in a harmonious nature with consideration to function, space and aesthetics. The term was coined in 2008 by Pool Expert, Author and Paragon Pools’ President, Joseph M. Vassallo, CBP, to define the architecture of water themed structures.

1892 was a big year. The “Nutcracker” premieres in Saint Petersburg Russia, Ellis Island opens as a US immigration station, and the Coca-Cola Company is incorporated. It is also the year this farmhouse was erected in the rural hills on the border of Chanhassen and Chaska.
“So, there’s a lot of architectural history to preserve in this porch remodel,” explains Murphy Bros. design/build consultant Theresa Mann. “Protecting the architectural integrity of this dwelling was most certainly job one.”
Originally the homeowner had a long list of improvements, including a second-floor master suite. But by the time we literally dug into the porch and its crumbling foundation, we realized some of that scope of work would have to wait.
Therefore, we limited the remodel to a new laundry room, a new 4-season porch with 5 Marvin Elevate double-hung windows in bronze, a balcony on top, featuring special Azek pavers, some cosmetic tuck-pointing of the brick façade and chimney, and waterproofing the basement.

Gut renovation of a 1,800 sq. ft., four bed, two bath pre-war loft apartment. The building was originally erected in 1845 and the homeowners wanted to preserve the layout and original features (including 7 ft tall sash windows and exposed brick walls) while updating the kitchen, bathrooms, staircase, flooring and HVAC system with exposed ducts.

There is Robert's court at his country house in Mt. Tremper, New York in the Catskills State Park. He couldn't get anyone to schlep up there to install his Pro Dunk Gold Basketball System for his family. So they started digging and chopping through slate stone, mixed concrete and erected his three teenage sons' pride and joy. He says it was sometimes tough to get them to come up there for family retreats, even with a pool, but having the world class hoop now makes it easy. This is a Pro Dunk Gold Basketball System that was purchased in April of 2012. It was installed on a 29 ft wide by a 30 ft deep playing area in White Plains, NY. This very social couple were tying the knot and looking to create a space to host their friends and community, while also adding much needed living space to their 900 square foot cottage. The couple had a strong emphasis on growing edible and medicinal plants. With many friends from a community garden project they were involved in and years of learning about permaculture, they wanted to incorporate many of the elements that the permaculture movement advocates for.
We came up with a California native and edible garden that incorporates three composting systems, a gray water system, rain water harvesting, a cob pizza oven, and outdoor kitchen. A majority of the materials incorporated into the hardscape were found on site or salvaged within 20-mile of the property. The garden also had amenities like an outhouse and shower for guests they would put up in the converted garage.
Coming into this project there was and An old clawfoot bathtub on site was used as a worm composting bin, and for no other reason than the cuteness factor, the bath tub composter had to stay. Added to that was a compost tumbler, and last but not least we erected an outhouse with a composting toilet system (The Nature's Head Composting Toilet).
We developed a gray water system incorporating the water that came out of the washing machine and from the outdoor shower to help water bananas, gingers, and canailles. All the down spouts coming off the roof were sent into depressions in the front yard. The depressions were planted with carex grass, which can withstand, and even thrive on, submersion in water that rain events bring to the swaled-out area. Aesthetically, carex reads as a lawn space in keeping with the cottage feeling of the home.
As with any full-fledged permaculture garden, an element of natural building needed to be incorporated. So, the heart and hearth of the garden is a cob pizza oven going into an outdoor kitchen with a built-in bench. Cob is a natural building technique that involves sculpting a mixture of sand, soil, and straw around an internal structure. In this case, the internal structure is comprised of an old built-in brick incinerator, and rubble collected on site.
Besides using the collected rubble as a base for the cob structure, other salvaged elements comprise major features of the project: the front fence was reconstructed from the preexisting fence; a majority of the stone edging was created by stones found while clearing the landscape in preparation for construction; the arbor was constructed from old wash line poles found on site; broken bricks pulled from another project were mixed with concrete and cast into vegetable beds, creating durable insulated planters while reducing the amount of concrete used ( and they also just have a unique effect); pathways and patio areas were laid using concrete broken out of the driveway and previous pathways. (When a little more broken concrete was needed, we busted out an old pad at another project a few blocks away.)
Far from a perfectly polished garden, this landscape now serves as a lush and inviting space for my clients, their friends and family to gather and enjoy each other’s company. Days after construction was finished the couple hosted their wedding reception in the garden—everyone danced, drank and celebrated, christening the garden and the union!

Flooding and drainage are becoming more and more common and we have lots of tools to mitigate, including plants and hardscaping. In this case were a large stream of rain water came down in the side yard of our client's we used a berm and plants to soak up the monsoon washouts. Veltiver, a tall ornamental grass to help prevent washouts from the adjacent golf club. We added a berm and underplanted it with Firebush. Veltiver is a warm season grass with light green, narrow leaves. It is stiffly erect with good fall color. Can be grown as an annual in a container in cooler climates. This is an edible plant and the oil obtain from the roots is used as a flavoring in sherbets, syrup sweets, fruit drinks and canned asparagus. These oils may be used in specific medical compounds.
