As you walk up to the front door of this wonderful 17th century French Country Home, you pass by the two red Crape Myrtle's that are guarding the entry way. The front doors were custom built by Antigua Doors in Danville, Ca and the house was built by Crowder Construction in Alamo, CA. Bill Woods of Danville is the architect.

Our European-style whole home project begins in the kitchen, with its arched entries, limewash walls, and elegant La Cornue CorneFé 110 range and combines old-world charm with modern amenities. To complete the design-build, we focused on functional and decorative elements that honor the space's character while adding layers of warmth and texture to the designed spaces. A young family with a wooded, triangular lot in Ipswich, Massachusetts wanted to take on a highly creative, organic, and unrushed process in designing their new home. The parents of three boys had contemporary ideas for living, including phasing the construction of different structures over time as the kids grew so they could maximize the options for use on their land. They hoped to build a net zero energy home that would be cozy on the very coldest days of winter, using cost-efficient methods of home building. The house needed to be sited to minimize impact on the land and trees, and it was critical to respect a conservation easement on the south border of the lot. Finally, the design would be contemporary in form and feel, but it would also need to fit into a classic New England context, both in terms of materials used and durability. We were asked to honor the notions of “surprise and delight,” and that inspired everything we designed for the family. The highly unique home consists of a three-story form, composed mostly of bedrooms and baths on the top two floors and a cross axis of shared living spaces on the first level. This axis extends out to an oversized covered porch, open to the south and west. The porch connects to a two-story garage with flex space above, used as a guest house, play room, and yoga studio depending on the day. A floor-to-ceiling ribbon of glass wraps the south and west walls of the lower level, bringing in an abundance of natural light and linking the entire open plan to the yard beyond. The master suite takes up the entire top floor, and includes an outdoor deck with a shower. The middle floor has extra height to accommodate a variety of multi-level play scenarios in the kids’ rooms. Many of the materials used in this house are made from recycled or environmentally friendly content, or they come from local sources. Natchez crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia 'Natchez') flower later in the summer season in New York and have attractive fall foliage. The red/cinnamon exfoliating bark gives year-round interest.

This perennial garden is full of grasses and plants that bloom throughout the year. The specimen tree is Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple), and is known for its exfoliating copper orange bark + exceptional fall color.

Additional guest parking was added by installing a paver pad to the side of the existing circular driveway. To blend the new section of pavers with the existing asphalt, radiating bands of pavers were installed between sections of asphalt. Photography by Linda Oyama Bryan

The irregular-edge bluestone walk stands out from the greenery leading visitors to the recessed front door. The wide, smooth surface, low, orchestrated plantings, decorative urns and landscape lighting create an elegant entry in scale with the home and property. Photography by Linda Oyama Bryan

First year planting for this project is a simple monochrome of greens and white. Low maintenance with small white flowers on the Geranium in the spring followed by the Annabelle Hydrangea white flowers all summer to late fall. The birches are preset through the summer with nice fall yellow coloring and interesting beige exfoliating bark for the winter. Some of the Heritage Birch trees are split for evening effect, underneath the wall caps are led lights as well as the steps.
