Houses in Santorini are white because the white color reflects the biggest part of the dazzling light, preventing the houses from getting warm and that was a basic goal of the traditional architecture. Making the houses heat resistant, the summers are much more tolerable and pleasant. According to historical sources, there is one more explanation to what led to the prevalence of the whitewashed houses. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the war, serious deceases, like cholera, plagued the Greek islands. Whitewash is a cheap, disinfectant material that was used regularly to limit the contagion. Inspiration for a contemporary home design remodel in DC Metro

We renovated our kitchen, keeping the existing cabinets, appliances and layout, with the help of Rhode Island Kitchen and Bath. Lynne Shore had a glint in her eye when she showed us her initial design: it included a glass backsplash (something I loved seeing on Houzz) with handmade felts behind it. I make felts from unspun wool (see my website for full explanation: robynadaniel.com). This is a truly unique way to display them. The result is a colorful, easy care backsplash. From the before and after photos you can see we took down the wall on the left and also changed the floor and countertops. It feels like a new kitchen! Photos: By the author.
