This narrow side yard was visually enlarged by curving bed lines. A stone pathway will soon be installed to keep feet dry.
The gate created needed privacy from sidewalk traffic.

This front yard was completely filled with gravel. We created an entryway, dry river bed to capture rain water, area to sit and watch the sun set, fire pit, and climate appropriate plants. The landscape explodes with different colors and textures, as well as lovely vignettes to catch the eye.

The southern exposure emerges from the landscape to receive the sun.

With a limited budget, we were able to transform and update this front garden with a new modern pathway, a small patio, and a variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants. The black mulch completes this modern landscape design transformation. I included a selection of plants that provide a variety of heights, colors and textures. A great alternative to water- thirsty lawns, especially important for Northern California gardens. © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

Design ideas for a large contemporary partial sun backyard retaining wall landscape in San Francisco with decking for summer.

Waterwood is a unique wood-look tile that’s not your everyday oak look. This wood is transformed by years of water exposure into a unique look found in only one place in the world.

Front side of the makeover includes concrete porch, rain chain, ribbon windows, rock landscape and a tall planter which transformed the house to a completely new building.

New wrought iron courtyard enclosure, new rock retaining wall to enhance elevation changes, and desert plants with year round interest.

To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. This butterfly garden and bird sanctuary is seen here in late spring. Dianthus, verbena, and daisies that are flowering here are combined with other drought tolerant shrubs, herbs and annuals that provide 4 seasons of lush color. Terraced stone walls on this steep sunny hillside retain the garden soil needed and provide access to all 3 levels. Photographer: Danna Cain, Home & Garden Design, Inc.

200 tons of storied boulders, slabs semi precious stones, specimen trees, flowers and pebbles... years of deep discussion, contemplation, heavy lifting and delicate placement... Naomi and I have completed our living portfolio.

Air conditioning units and Generators - Both essentials, but create eye sores and noise.
Custom built trellis was installed to allow air flow and access for servicing while hiding the units.

This is a close up photo of the eco-paver driveway. The pavers are laid on a properly installed, compacted base. Then 3/8" gravel is swept into the joints. Water then is able to flow into the subgrade, rather than end up in the storm drains. Design and Photograph by Patrick Murphy
