My clients home is a wonderful combination of styles. On the exterior, the architectural style is Georgian/Georgian Colonial, covered in used bricks. Their interiors however, are more contemporary and transitional. The combination of these styles was the design program I was given for this entryway. I configured the size, shape and frequency of the hand-beveled glass background pieces so they matched those of the used bricks on the exterior. I offered this idea to bring the exterior into the interior, and vice versa. There are many textures of clear glass used for the circular elements, as well as highlights created form hand-beveled glass as well. Since this entry faced south, I selected beveled glass with the intended effect (seen above) to flood the foyer with prismatic color cast through the beveled glass. The clients approached Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: refresh their home while seamlessly integrating new programmatic elements. Key goals included clarifying and enhancing the entry sequence; connecting the detached garage to the main house with a practical yet architecturally intentional intervention; adding functional spaces such as a mudroom and laundry room; expanding and remodeling the primary suite’s bathroom and closet; and creating a more engaging outdoor space that capitalized on the site’s impressive views, featuring a fire pit and outdoor kitchen. As a couple with distinct yet complementary perspectives—one focused on modern functionality and technology, and the other dedicated to preserving the home’s architectural integrity—their collaboration with Klopf Architecture resulted in a solution that harmonized both ideals. Their shared commitment to improving the livability of their home led to a design dialogue rooted in balance. This dynamic partnership shaped the direction of the renovation, ensuring that every decision honored the spirit of the original home while aligning with the practical needs of their growing family. Designing within the constraints of the sloped site posed one of the project’s central challenges. The detached garage sat at a higher elevation than the main house, requiring a solution that ensured architectural and geometric compatibility between the two structures. A notable pinch point in the plan—where differing geometries converged—was treated as a hinge point, turning a potentially awkward juncture into an architectural feature. This area now functions as both a transition and a moment of design interest that unifies the overall plan. The design also addressed the underutilized outdoor area, which was located in a shadowed portion of the site with geometrical limitations. A new connection to the rear deck was created in this same area, making the outdoor space more useful and inviting. Klopf Architecture introduced carefully positioned openings and spatial improvements that forged a strong visual and functional connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The outdoor area now reads as a deliberate extension of the home, embracing natural light and emphasizing the dramatic views. Working through multiple design iterations, Klopf Architecture crafted a solution that preserved the architectural language of the original home while supporting the functional needs of modern life. The garage-to-house connection became more than a passage—it evolved into an architectural moment of transition. A new mudroom and laundry space enhanced convenience without compromising the clean lines of the design. The primary suite was expanded to create a private, serene retreat. The goal of this extensive remodel was to bring a home that was distinctly 80s into the present. Our clients were an active family with three rambunctious, growing boys. Durability and practicality were high priorities. The homeowners wanted to create a space where both adults and children were at home, and that included feminine touches for Mom. We knew they’d need storage and space to play, so we transformed the formal dining room into a dedicated playroom with plenty of built-ins for toys, puzzles, books, and board games. We took two impractical spaces and removed the center wall, creating a bunk room that feels fort-like and imaginative. For the parents, we created a haven in their primary suite with a proper sitting area surrounding a fireplace as well as a shower/bath wet room. New front doors and window treatments were installed to enhance the natural light and complement the much-improved aesthetic.

Able to accommodate up to twelve people comfortably seated, it is a practical and fast, ideal for invitations "last moment" and to satisfy the desire to stay together and to share fully their homes and their spaces. Characterized by an opening flap which is activated by sliding the top along the guides, SPINNAKER has the floor in solid teak slats and the structure of the legs, with a geometric design and the continuous line, stainless steel painted for outdoor use, in the colors smoke and milk. San Diego Gas & Electric Company’s Century Park East office building is a showcase for Green Remodeling. The building which is a recent extension of their headquarters in Kearny Mesa – has a Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”. The 92,000-square-foot building underwent extensive remodeling, embodies best practices in energy efficiency, water conservation, and clean transportation, as well as designs to enhance employee wellness. We congratulate SDG&E for their LEED certified green building and for choosing Terrazzo flooring & Arim Inc aggregates which enable creating durable, low maintenance and green flooring filled with naturally occurring or recycled stones.

This mudroom was an extension to a modern kitchen. We brought the same tones and wood finish to this area and the punch of colors used in the kitchen. One can change their shoes and throw them in the shoe tray near by while comfortably seating in this comfy storage/bench filled with items you want out of site. The tall closets hold winter coats, winter hats, summer shoes and even sun screen. A tranquil, bright and organize mudroom with and artistic attitude! Inna Spivakova
