The owner, an outdoorsman and native plant enthusiast, and former project manager of notable Seattle buildings (including the Olympic Sculpture Park and the Bullitt Center), tasked Best Practice Architecture with designing a modest yet comfortable home reflective of valley cabins and farmsteads. He desired a small home that was ‘light on the land’, yet flexible enough to accommodate visiting friends and family. Located in a quiet river valley 10 miles from the nearest town, the result is a humble compound firmly rooted in the rural vernacular. The Methow Valley was familiar to the owner from childhood ski and camping trips and he now has family who live in the area. The Valley is hot and dry in the summer and on average receives over 70 inches of snow each winter. Set in a narrow river valley below high mountain peaks, the owner wanted the new home to have a strong visual and physical connection to the surrounding landscape. For many years, the homestead was operated as a horse packing guide service, and an old agricultural barn remains that will eventually be repurposed into a ski waxing room, shop, and sauna. Two new structures make up the residential retreat: a one-bedroom main house and a carport with an adjoining guest suite, small office, and storage for outdoor equipment. Best Practice’s design prioritizes natural light and optimizes dramatic views of the surrounding meadow, forest, hills, and mountains “I wanted both the design and scale of the new buildings to reflect traditional ranch homes and cabins in the remote river valley with all the creature comforts of modern living,” said the homeowner. “Ensuring a strong connection to the outside throughout the seasons was a primary goal. Windows on all sides and three exterior doors allow me to track the many species of birds and wildlife that move through the property and access the ever-changing light and weather.” Best Practice carefully positioned the new structures to frame important vistas while minimizing disturbance to the native forest and meadow. The exterior finishes and details are consistent with historic cabins and barns in the area but stylized to acknowledge the new structure’s place in time. Metal roofing, siding, and a gravel skirt were chosen to reduce wildfire risk, and native plantings attract and support local birds and wildlife. Best Practice simplified the interior detailing with a nod towards a rural cabin aesthetic, incorporating painted beadboard, extensive built-in cabinetry, warm woods, a sizeable kitchen, and an open nook for daytime lounging and overnight guests. The design also took into account the owner’s collection of art, family heirlooms, and furniture gathered over many years. Best Practice designed this Methow Valley home to respect the history and beauty of the historic Aspen Leaf Ranch while embracing modern comforts. The design successfully meets a well-considered program for 4-season use and serves as a full-time rural retreat for the owner as well as a gathering place for friends and family.

For this project it was crucial to find more working space in such a limited kitchen size. To accommodate this, we designed a full Naxo extension table for them. This practical system consists of a tabletop peninsula that fits in the space normally provided by the drawer. Simply open the front panel to deploy the extension table. For the cabinets, the homeowners went with an Elegante door in white supermat by Northern Contours. We then installed a new quartz countertop and backsplash both done in Carrara extra. To complete the new look a new subzero fridge, Wolf induction cooktop, microwave drawer and oven were installed.

Our design for an apartment located in the West End-Collegiate Historic District Extension in Manhattan addressed a number of challenges to unleash the potential of this 2.500-square-foot space in an elegant pre-war building. When purchased by our client, the property was in estate condition and needed extensive work, requiring demolition and a complete makeover of the living spaces, as well as the addition of contemporary climate control. Among the spatial and design challenges, the primary bathroom was exposed to the entry foyer of the apartment, and the dining room and kitchen were each closed-in and lacking light. The dining room’s promise as a bright, convivial space was fulfilled by adding double pocket doors opening to the living room, kitchen and foyer, establishing a seamless flow through the entertaining spaces while bringing in much-needed light. We designed a chic and modern solution for the primary bedroom’s lack of privacy, creating a walk-in closet that serves as a transitional vestibule in the bedroom, adding both visual intrigue and additional storage space while shielding the viewscape from the apartment entrance through the foyer to the bedroom. To add a three-zone central air conditioning system, we took advantage of the kitchen facing an interior courtyard, placing the air conditioning condensers here, which also satisfied landmark property restrictions. The climate control system was accomplished without lowering ceiling heights. Finally, we worked with the client to choose classic finishes and fixtures that reflect and enhance the historic nature of the property, and are also contemporary and timeless. These include unlacquered brass hardware, herringbone oak flooring with a stencil border, black-and-white bathrooms, and paneling, trim, and moldings that are simple and elegant. POP Architecture was the architect for the project, and Godwin Construction was the general contractor.

A 1929 urban Bungalow well preserved save for the kitchen. The kitchen had been twice remodeled – most recently in the 1970’s by previous homeowners. Our clients wished to restore the original Craftsman-era charm to their kitchen (which adjoined the dining room and was visible from the front entry). At the same time, our clients were looking to increase the functionality of the kitchen space and create additional seating for frequent dinner guests. Our clients’ tight budget restricted the finish pallet to rather simple options, but that simplicity became the project’s strength. Custom cabinets (using FSC-certified maple) were designed with simple flat panel doors and fabricated using dove-tail joinery as was typical of Bungalow cabinetry. Red oak, stained to match the home’s original millwork was used to construct the cabinet lowers and a new bench to create continuity with the remainder of the home. Carrara marble, authentic to the 1920s period, was used to aesthetically brighten the space. Cabinet uppers were enameled in a historically appropriate cream hue to compliment the countertop stone. The backsplash tile was selected to pay tribute to the home’s original 1929 wall color – found beneath several layers of wallpaper during demolition. Walls were painted a bold, but historically, accurate, copper color (a perfect compliment the red oak cabinetry and trim). Lighting issues in this north-facing kitchen were addressed using hidden over-cabinet lights, task-specific under-cabinet lighting, sink cans and several period fixtures – hand fashioned by a local artisan specializing in historic reproductions to complete the bungalow look and honor the Arts-n-Crafts practice of using local craftsman. Simple and practical…in budget and in period. To solve the seating issue, a new bench (with storage below) was custom built to span the 12’ dining room wall – allowing plenty of room for family and guests alike during dinner. The larger kitchen approach provided room for a new serve-through with counter seating where snacks, homework, and spill-over food prep can occur. No new square footage… six new seats! To solve storage needs, the base cabinets in the kitchen were designed 3” deeper than standard 24” box cabinets and a new 28” deep pantry added allowing some of the wasted space at the center of this square kitchen to be used more efficiently. A tall backsplash capped with a 4” ledge provides a place for all of the inevitable items that clutter valuable counter real estate (cooking timers, seasoning jars, etc …) Specialized, task-specific storage - the highlight of Bungalow kitchens - was incorporated throughout: 1) An angled cabinet, built to accommodate an awkward side door location, now holds a trash can, tin-lined recycling bins, and a knife drawer; 2) A difficult deep corner necessitated by the 28” deep fridge gave rise to open cookbook shelves, an appliance cubby and narrow, and a deep pantry with full-extension roll-out trays; 3) An open pot & pan rack, built-in wall spice cabinet, kid-height microwave (a special request from our clients), customized cell-phone/electronics storage, built-in chalk board message center, and new rear entry coat/backpack storage with cork board complete the net storage gain. No new square footage … lots of new, innovative, high-functioning storage.

In total, this custom home features over 4,100 square feet of finished living space, including approximately 2,800 square feet above grade and over 1,300 square feet in the finished lower level. The home offers 5 bedrooms, or 6 bedrooms when utilizing the main-floor flex room as a bedroom, 3.5 bathrooms, multiple gathering spaces, a dedicated office, exercise room, expansive outdoor living areas, and countless custom details throughout. Every square foot was intentionally designed to maximize functionality, comfort, and beauty while creating a home uniquely tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. Not only was this a beautiful home situated on a stunning site, but it was also a beautiful project that truly showcased the endless customization possibilities available with Buffum Homes. The Stretch Ceiling is an interior design element, and not a structural component. The whole process is streamlined and fairly simple: the stretch ceiling membrane is usually extended by +5% during the installation process, ensuring it to remain flat and not sag. Then, every inch of harpoon is safely fastened so now the membrane must gradually and completely cool down, on its own. Until it reaches normal room temperature, the area must remain closed. At the end, you get a perfectly flat ceiling. Final As a final step, openings for recessed lighting, A/C vents, pipes, etc, are very carefully cut out into the membrane then, in order to enable the final fittings to be set up, reinforcing rings get inserted. All previous steps require professional experience and extensive practice with full knowledge of the product, as well as the use of specialized equipment.

With a deep respect for the home’s original architecture, Klopf Architecture reimagined the house to better meet the needs of its owners—introducing functional improvements while preserving the spirit and character of its mid-century roots. The clients approached Klopf Architecture with a clear vision: refresh their home while seamlessly integrating new programmatic elements. Key goals included clarifying and enhancing the entry sequence; connecting the detached garage to the main house with a practical yet architecturally intentional intervention; adding functional spaces such as a mudroom and laundry room; expanding and remodeling the primary suite’s bathroom and closet; and creating a more engaging outdoor space that capitalized on the site’s impressive views, featuring a fire pit and outdoor kitchen. As a couple with distinct yet complementary perspectives—one focused on modern functionality and technology, and the other dedicated to preserving the home’s architectural integrity—their collaboration with Klopf Architecture resulted in a solution that harmonized both ideals. Their shared commitment to improving the livability of their home led to a design dialogue rooted in balance. This dynamic partnership shaped the direction of the renovation, ensuring that every decision honored the spirit of the original home while aligning with the practical needs of their growing family. Designing within the constraints of the sloped site posed one of the project’s central challenges. The detached garage sat at a higher elevation than the main house, requiring a solution that ensured architectural and geometric compatibility between the two structures. Rather than create a purely utilitarian link, Klopf Architecture introduced an intentional connection that contributes to the overall architectural language. A notable pinch point in the plan—where differing geometries converged—was treated as a hinge point, turning a potentially awkward juncture into an architectural feature. This area now functions as both a transition and a moment of design interest that unifies the overall plan. The design also addressed the underutilized outdoor area, which was located in a shadowed portion of the site with geometrical limitations. A new connection to the rear deck was created in this same area, making the outdoor space more useful and inviting. Klopf Architecture introduced carefully positioned openings and spatial improvements that forged a strong visual and functional connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The outdoor area now reads as a deliberate extension of the home, embracing natural light and emphasizing the dramatic views. Working through multiple design iterations, Klopf Architecture crafted a solution that preserved the architectural language of the original home while supporting the functional needs of modern life. The garage-to-house connection became more than a passage—it evolved into an architectural moment of transition. A new mudroom and laundry space enhanced convenience without compromising the clean lines of the design. The primary suite was expanded to create a private, serene retreat. The reimagined backyard, complete with fire pit and kitchen, now plays a vital role in the family’s daily routine and social life. Outcomes and Lasting Impact The result is a home that balances heritage with contemporary design, technical precision with design sensibility.
