For this project in Ambleside, we created a made-to-measure fitted bedroom. The goal was to maximise storage and dressing space without overpowering the room, as it had many windows with views to be admired. We selected Daval’s Made-to-Measure Fitted Bedroom Furniture, which allowed for flexibility in design. It features a backlite headboard panel, bedside chests with LED reading lights, and USB points with lighting controls easily accessible. A mirror-fronted wardrobe placed at a corner utilises the space beautifully for full-hanging storage while doubling as a dressing mirror. The design also features his-and-hers dressing areas so the couple can have their own dedicated spaces. Chests were strategically positioned, providing extra storage for small items while adding warmth and balance to the design. They had an ensuite bathroom with an alcove area outside, perfect for a run of robes for extra storage, with everything behind closed doors. This bedroom was thoughtfully designed by Mike Hughes and expertly installed by our skilled installation team. Situated in Lancaster county overlooking Amish farms this older home had excellent bones to create a modern, industrial look. The original kitchen had traditional walnut cabinets and a rustic look. The client from San Francisco recognized the potential and hired us to come up with a design that matched their taste and coordinated with the house - modern with a little bit of industrial chic. It was important that the kitchen had counter space, storage, and seating. Space was limited we removed a wall and added a niche wall with the refrigerator. Our client requested lots of storage space to create a clear and uncluttered counter. All cooking equipment and small appliances have a place. A large pantry was created for extra storage. Full height cabinets on either side of the refrigerator provide storage and easy access to small kitchen appliances. Top hinged cabinet doors make storage easily accessible. Drawers were used for base cabinets so that items are easily within reach. Moving from the sink to the range and to the refrigerator is easy with just a few steps between each appliance - making cooking a breeze. Globe lights over the island create plenty of light for cooking, eating or working. Under-counter lighting and hidden hood lighting provide additional brightness. A long marble topped island with a waterfall edge serves as a prep station and counter for serving. The upper counter can be used for seating, standing, and serving. Using a monochromatic palette with wood accents kept the design clean and allows the eye to settle on beautiful details. The results are a functional, open modern feeling kitchen, with a beautiful backdrop of the Amishfarm outside full length windows. It is very special.

The kitchen was originally planned to mimic the location of appliances in her current kitchen to minimize re-learning of appliance locations. The only change was adding a trash cabinet between the fridge and the sink. A french door fridge allows someone in a wheelchair to easily access frozen and cold foods, while the water and ice dispenser on the outside of the door make it easy to stay hydrated rather than using the sink each time. She can roll up to the kitchen sink due to the recessed cabinetry under the sink or stand at counter height to put away dishes from the dishwasher. The dishwasher is ADA and very simple to use , and is raised off the floor so whether she is sitting or standing it's easier to reach. The gas cooktop has controls at the front making it easy to reach from the wheelchair and the exhaust fan above also has a control at the front. All cabinet door handles are D-shape, which makes them easy to grasp and there is plenty of electric outlets for charging phones, computers and small appliances. The kitchen island is table height at 30" so meal prep can be easily done in a wheelchair while guests and can be seated in a chair or wheelchair around the island. The dining chairs can also be turned around to add extra seating in the living room area. Pendant lights above the kitchen island light up the space, while recessed lighting in the kitchen and living room provide overall room lighting. There is also under cabinet lighting which makes the room glow at night! Wainscoting made of commercial grade material is strategically placed on sharp corners and exposed walls to reduce and minimize damage from the wheel chair, while creating a finished and complete look! We selected a free standing microwave to sit below the island, which is easy to use and is the same style as in her previous apartment. The island is 48" from the appliance wall, leaving ample space to open doors and maneuver around in the wheelchair and has easy access to the laundry area as well. We eliminated the pocket doors that had been in front of the laundry area for easy access, and since it was exposed, dressed it up with coordinating tile to the kitchen with additional cabinets above. There is a coordinating quartz counter on top of the washer and dryer for folding laundry or storing additional supplies.

What became the playroom was a formerly under-utilized space over the garage that wasn’t connected to the rest of the second level. We redesigned the hallway from the bedrooms as well as the main bath to allow large double doors into the area and a much larger bathroom for the children. Shutting off a stairway from the mudroom below allowed extra space for a custom locker style bench and a re-designed laundry area as well as more space in the playroom. The playroom was designed to ‘grow’ with the children. We used bright colours that work for all ages.
