When the homeowners purchased this sprawling 1950’s rambler, the aesthetics would have discouraged all but the most intrepid. The décor was an unfortunate time capsule from the early 70s. And not in the cool way - in the what-were-they-thinking way. When unsightly wall-to-wall carpeting and heavy obtrusive draperies were removed, they discovered the room rested on a slab. Knowing carpet or vinyl was not a desirable option, they selected honed marble. Situated between the formal living room and kitchen, the family room is now a perfect spot for casual lounging in front of the television. The space proffers additional duty for hosting casual meals in front of the fireplace and rowdy game nights. The designer’s inspiration for a room resembling a cozy club came from an English pub located in the countryside of Cotswold. With extreme winters and cold feet, they installed radiant heat under the marble to achieve year 'round warmth. The time-honored, existing millwork was painted the same shade of British racing green adorning the adjacent kitchen's judiciously-chosen details. Reclaimed light fixtures both flanking the walls and suspended from the ceiling are dimmable to add to the room's cozy charms. Floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the space provide ample natural light to provide relief to the sumptuous color palette. A whimsical collection of art, artifacts and textiles buttress the club atmosphere.

With Manarola, Philippe Nigro has designed a new type of seating which offers remarkable comfort and a very welcoming appearance. To achieve this, the whole seat seems like a single large cushion placed on a light yet assertive base. The metal frame which lends it shape is enveloped in foam and the upholstered part of the seat rests on the elegant solid wood buttresses supporting the back which make up the base. The armchair is also available on a circular steel base in a brilliant-polished stainless steel finish, which rotates 360°. To complement this there is a footstool with 4 steel legs, also in a brilliant-polished stainless steel finish. Then, thanks to the ultra-flexible new polyurethane foams, Philippe Nigro refines the initial welcoming feel and the feeling of softness which comes with use, making good use of the carefully-judged slopes of the backward-slanting seat, lumbar support and headrest, emphasized by horizontal bands of stitching.

The tightly constrained footprint of the affectionately named “Box on the Rock” is a response to a limited budget and difficult site. Shallow underground hillside waterways run across the site often daylighting in unexpected and unwanted locations. These necessitated relatively expensive pier footings thus motivating an extremely efficient 2,000 sq ft footprint. With no initial resources to develop the wild scrub and rock landscape of the 3-acre property, the home becomes a lone outpost settling the higher ground of the larger natural site --a literal box on a rock. Given these limitations, the architecture of this outpost needs to provide for all indoor and outdoor functions within its area. With the extremes of the wine country microclimate on the exposed site, this becomes an even more critical requirement for year-round comfort. The central courtyard and the cantilevered deck are strategically carved out of the diagrammatic box to ensure that over the course of the day, temperate options for both sun and shade are always available. In particular, the geometry of the overhang at the front cantilevered deck and the inward angle of its exterior glass walls are carefully calibrated to capture morning sun and winter warming while shielding the internal space from the harshest summer glare. Later in the day the central courtyard comes alive as the sunniest developed outdoor space, yet one that is naturally cooled by capturing the valley cross breezes. With an economy of means, this simple form morphs to amplify the experience of the dramatic site and create an expansive feeling home that belies its small footprint. Before this shower was extremely dangerous for my clients. It contained a step down to get into the shower. For an 55+ community this is not safe. We designed it to be safe easy transitional flow getting into the shower and out of the shower. We eliminated the curb and the step down recessed floor. We raised the floor flush with the current floor and made the shower floor slope towards the drain. We also bumped out and enlarged the shower for added room. As you can see to enhance the value we ran the porcelain tile and accent tile mosaic all the way up to the ceiling. We added 2 wall niches for the clients shampoos, soaps and accessories. We added the flexibility of the teak bench for comfort and functional use. We added grab bar for client's safety.

This 5-story 1860’s Brooklyn townhouse features Zola’s triple-glazed Thermo Clad windows and doors in pine. Finding high performance windows that were large and quality-crafted was an important aspect of combining the passive house standard with the original intent of a top-notch design and tasteful renovation of the historic home.
